X-Men X-Men

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of X-23 with sound clips and images.
Franchise: X-Men

(Note: While yes it has been said that Tara Strong voiced X-23 in Wolverine and the X Men but she never actually said anything in that show.)

Alright folks in this X-Men Voice Compare not only will this start with X Men Evolution this is for a character that was originally made for X Men Evolution. (Though she also got into the comics much like Firestar from Spider Man and his Amazing Friends, Terry McGinnis and especially Harley Quinn from the DCAU.) Anyways X-23 appeared in a couple of episodes in the series and was voiced by Andrea Libman in her first appearance in her self-titled episode "X-23". While this is by no means the first time Andrea has voiced a young female character before but this is a fairly interesting change of pace for her. Normally the voice that Andrea uses for her roles is a cutesy higher voice and while she does try to do a slightly lower voice that what she usually does you can tell its her though. (But its not that bad to me as to keep in mind while X-23 is a bit older than the roles Andrea usually gets she is still a rather young girl anyways.) Anyways Andrea does do a pretty good dramatic performance as this angry and deep down frightened young lady here.

In her second and last appearance in the series "Target X" she was voiced by Brittney Irvin. While I am not certain why they couldn't get Andrea to reprise the role but Brittney was a pretty good alternative as well. And while Brittney's X-23 voice is slightly lower than Andrea's it still sounds rather similar nevertheless. Oh yes and Brittney's performance also worked well for X-23's persona as she is still an angry little lady with issues but it does reflect on how X-23 is a bit more collected this time around as well. Overall I must say that both performances did do fairly well for this role so I am pretty much going with a tie here.

(Note: While X-23 didn't say anything on Wolverine and the X-Men she does get to speak in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 in which Tara Strong is still voicing her. Tara's voice and performance do work for the role pretty well and while her X-23 voice has been higher, when her X-23 voice does get lower it does remind me of her work as Raven from Teen Titans which certainly does work. Overall Tara's work as X-23 is another example of her fine work but I still like all 3 of them just the same nevertheless.)

VC thoughts update

I actually like Tara Strong the most in the role. Tara does sound like a female Wolverine clone (aggressive, pissy and badass) and she does have quite a lot of energy.

Andrea Libman's voice is a little bit young, but her performance and energy is great.

Brittney Irvin has the more fitting voice, but I feel her delivery could get kinda wonky at times.

Arguably one of the breakout characters of the 2000s for the X-Men, Laura Kinney--AKA, X-23--has easily leaped into the ranks of my favourite X-Men characters, if not being perhaps my favourite female member of the team as a whole, and I eagerly await further media representation for her. So, in the meantime...

Twilight Sparkle vs. Pinkie/Fluttershy vs. Lightning Dust Royale is A-GO!

1. Tara Strong - While, admittedly, fighting games can be a mixed bag in terms of voice-over material, Tara's voice for Laura Kinney definitely fits the character best. It has its moments of inconsistencies, but the more aggressive, hot-blooded voice Tara gives her definitely captures the idea she is Wolverine's daughter/female clone well. Given some more material in the future, I could easily see Tara's performance only becoming better.

2. Brittney Irvin - Truth be told, it took me until her second episode on X-Men Evolution to really grow to like the character... and I feel the change in voice did really help. Irvin's delivery gave her a sense of maturity beyond her years, and really made me believe the bitterness and cynicism she felt regarding her life. But, due to the actual character herself as portrayed in Evolution, she does still sound a little too young for a comics version.

3. Andrea Libman - ...ehh... truth be told, while it is a nice departure from her typical sorta role, Libman feels like a miscast for this sort of character. Too high-pitched and youthful in term of her voice and delivery for me. Even with the knowledge she is meant to be 14-16, it doesn't really fit that age range for me neither.

CASTING COUCH: If she ever steps out and gets some voice roles in Western animation as well as anime? Erica Mendez would absolutely NAIL Laura, I think. Her Ryuko Matoi in particular exemplifies for me several core characteristics that a good X-23 VA should have--the aggressive, passionate tone; the confidence, but also the moments of doubt; the humanistic side to her... She'd both be able to come off, to me, convincingly as Logan's daughter/clone but also make the character her own and shine outside of Wolverine's shadow.

Aside from Erica, if ever another pony wanted to step up to the plate, Ashleigh Ball could probably pull it off too (I could sorta see her Rainbow Dash voice working as a good template, in terms of the sorta tone I could see her working with).

This isn't exactly the most fair voice compare as we have two younger depictions of the character versus one adult version but with that said Tara Strong relatively fits the character the most.

It's a nice change of pace for Tara to basically voice Wolverine's Rule 63 clone. Though I think her take kinda inconsistent at times though if she ever got another chance, she could be even better in the role.

Brittney Irvin was the better X-Men Evolution voice, she sounds mature despite sounding very young, plus she nails the jaded bitterness really well.

Andrea Libman was her first voice and in hindsight it's kinda weird that Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy did X-23. (well weird so was Twilight Sparkle and Lighting Dust) but I think she's kinda miscast as she sounds maybe too young and high pitch for the role. Though it's great to hear her voice a feral and aggressive character, a departure from her usual cutesy roles.

In the end Tara has my vote mostly due to being the closest to how the character should sound at least for now.

BONUS: If I had to pick a new voice for X-23. I'd love to see Whitney Rodgers voice her. I think a gruffer and (even) more cynical sounding Yozora would be a perfect fit.

1- Tara Strong- She goes back and forth with Brittney Irvin as my favorite. I think her voice is the most fitting for X-23's ferocious side, but I would like to see her get more material than just gameplay taunts.
2-Brittney Irvin- Sounds matured enough, and she puts a lot of emotion into the role.
3- Andrea Libman- Good for being the original voice and all, but she sounds too young and goes really over the top sometimes, which I don't associate with the character at all.

@chaosincarnate In Andrea's defense though, she was meant to be somewhere between 14 to 16.

I find it amusing that all three actresses so far have voiced ponies at some point in their careers. :)

It seems not a whole lot of people are that enthusiastic about Libman's take on the character based solely on what they have to listen to here. Perhaps a new, longer clip better demonstrating her range as the character is in order?

@CatsTuxedo Who new Twilight Sparkle and Pinky Pie could be so.......feral.

Pinky Pie - "Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh, I'm like so excited about ripping out your heart and eating your entrails :-D"

@CatsTuxedo Twilight Sparkle - "Dear Princess Celestia, I killed them, I killed them all :-D"

And those mental images of Pinkie and Twilight as X-23 are still tame compared some of the darkfics of FiM.

Tara gets my vote solely by virtue of not being in a terrible X-Men show. (Seriously, am I the only one on this sight who thinks that Evolution was simply horrendous?)

@TheAtticus You do know that there would be no X-23 without Evolution, yes?
said at 8:39 PM on Fri Mar 29 2013
@GerPer92 Yeah, but I don't care. It's like Deadpool. He was created by Rob Liefeld, but became an awesome character since then. Does that mean that I like Liefeld? No. I like his creation, but only because he was in stuff not done by Liefeld where he was awesome. Same here. X-23 may have come from a terrible show, but I still like her from things other than Evolution (namely MvC3).

@TheAtticus Um... these Voice Compares are about who has the best voice, not which actress was in the best show or movie or whatever.

Thanks for proving that widespread voting pattern exists, by the way. Many users around here are so desperate to deny it, and it's people like you that force them to see the truth ;)

@CatsTuxedo I listened to the other clips. Libman was annoying, and Irvin was boring.
said at 4:57 PM on Sat Mar 30 2013
@TheAtticus Well, other than Deadpool X-23 wasn't completely revamped after being adapted. But like CatsTuxedo said, it's about the voice, not the character. And like with Beta Ray Bill, you're welcome to have your opinion ;)
But don't tell anybody to shut up, that's rude.

I'm gonna go with Tara Strong for X-23. They're all good, but I thought Tara was better. That said, as a Brony, it does amuse me that that X-23 was originally Pinkie Pie/Fluttershy and more recently is Twilight Sparkle.XD

No! No! I was wrong to say that about Andrea's! What I mean to say is that she sounds like she's so on edge and that she's frightened about something or for a big reason. Sorry! Andrea did very nice at that. ^_^!

When i heard Andrea's, it sounded too much like a spoiled child. About Brittney's, it sounded a little better than Andrea's, but X-23 sounded like an enraged caracal. Finally, when I heard Tara's, it sounded more like a teenage girl who's ready to fight. I like Tara's and Brittney's voices for X-23. She's my favorite character, but I also most likely like Shadowcat AKA Kitty.
