I honestly don't particularly like Judd Nelson's take especially in the movie
I prefer Dick Gautier the most with Paul Dobson second then Ben Pronsky third
Travis WIllingham was okay same with Ted Schwartz
Peter had the voice but was a bit flat in delivery
Then we have Judd, I'll give it he's better in Animated but I dunno...
Frank has next to nothing so he's bottom

I'll admit that I'm not the biggest fan of Rodimus, but I also don't hate him like many Transformers fans do. While I prefer Optimus Prime as a character, I like the fact that Rodimus has his problems like doubting himself.

Anyway, while I like Judd Nelson's performance, I feel he's kind of off as Rodimus. I prefer Dick Gautier in the role.

@8000 Saiyans I personally always felt Rodimus was the better character of the two Autobot leaders. IMO Optimus was the better role model, but Rodimus was the more relatable and down to earth character.

His insecurities and doubts made him more compelling than Optimus for me. And Dick Gautier's performance really did convey that quite well.

My Top 5 Favourite Hot Shot/ Rodimus Prime Voices:

5. Ted Schwartz
4. Travis Willingham
3. Dick Gauter
2. Paul Dobson/ Omar Sy
1. Judd Nelson

Future VA Suggestions:

Rino Romano would be Fantastic as Hot Shot/ Rodimus Prime IMO. He Could use his Spider-Man voice for Hot Shot and a More Commanding Version of his Kyle Katarn or Batman Voice.

Neil Patrick Harris would be "AWSOOOME" as Rodimus, using his Nightwing voice when he's a Prime and his Spider-Man voice in his Hot Shot Form.

I also Recommend Ross Marquand, Scott Porter, Wayne Grayson and Jerry O'Connell

Judd's energy and youth is incredibly well done in the original 86 film and I like that they brought him back to play him in TFA, which even there he still works pretty well.

Frank has barely anything to go off of, and it really doesn't sound all that amazingly fitting.

Ted sounds appropriately youthful, though I feel his delivery is a little too flat.

Dick sounds much more like a older leader and his delivery works more than Ted's, but he subtracts the energy that I feel works better for the character, almost making him sound tired. It's not horrible, but I feel he should've added a bit more to it to make it stand out.

Paul is a little chuckleworthy with how deep he is. It's not bad delivery wise, but the voice I feel is too distractingly deep here.

Peter sounds....okay. It's not amazing or anything, and the delivery is on/off in terms of sounding good. But as a whole it's just there.

For the incredibly limited material, Travis works very well. He's got this great youthful sound and he definitely shows promise.

Ben sounds youthful, though I feel his delivery can go half and half here. Sometimes he sounds good, sometimes he sounds really bland.

1. Judd Nelson
2. Travis Willingham
3. Ben Pronsky
4. Dick Gautier
5. Ted Schwartz
6. Peter Von Gomm
7. Paul Dobson
8. Frank Welker

I'd say for a future VA, Freddie Prinze Jr. or Josh Keaton

@skeletonking1234 Dick's clip is not the best example of his work. He's a lot more energetic than this (especially if you see episodes like "The Burden Hardest to Bear" where he really adds a whole lot of energy into the performance).

Updated VC thoughts

Dick Gautier delivers a great performance as both Rodimus and Hot Rod, making him more of a reluctant champion than the typical heroic leader is yet still having presence. Thanks to his performance, Rodimus is actually my favorite Autobot leader of them all. Doubtful of his abilities yet a natural leader and a charming, admirable and relatable fellow, I always liked Rodimus more than Optimus, and Gautier's performance is the main reason for that.

Judd Nelson was cool as Hot Rod and Animated Rodimus (thanks to the fact that his voice aged a little bit), but I don't feel that he brings the down-to-earth aspects that Dick has. Plus, his Rodimus sounded pretty forced in the movie. Still, it's a pretty cool performance overall.

Ted Schwartz is good, he would fit Hot Rod quite nicely, but he doesn't fit Rodimus that well. He just doesn't have the presence that Dick has.

Frank Welker does sound quite interesting. I would like to hear more.

Ben Pronsky delivers a good performance, but I feel that the writing ruined the character completely.

Travis Willingham is pretty enjoyable. I wish to hear more from him.

Paul Dobson and Peter Von Gomm are pretty unremarkable.

Omar Sy plays a different version of the character and he really did a good job at it. The explanation they gave for Roddy's accent was pretty hilarious and Sy's comedic timing is great.

He's my new second place. He's great, but doesn't leave the lasting impression that Dick Gautier left on me. Dick is just irreplaceable for me.

1. Dick Gautier
2. Judd Nelson (TF:Animated)
3. Ted Schwartz
4. Paul Dobson (still awesome, but not that fitting)
5. Judd Nelson (Movie)

I vote for Judd, he was awesome as Hot Rod while Animated showed he could do a good Rodimus.

I love Rodimus...mostly. I feel he has more room to grow as a character than Optimus Prime. I like that he had an arc in Season 3 of G1 (even if most of it was a you need more confidence in yourself), I also really love him in MTMTE where he's this really cocky, hot blooded idiot who just wants to have some fun with the quest he's on.

Of all the voices here, Judd Nelson does this role best. I'm a bit biased since I prefer the 86 Movie the most out of G1 and Judd Nelson being his VA was an interesting choice. John Bender from The Breakfast Club as this turbo revving young punk. One of the first major use of celebrities voice acting in animated movies and he was fantastic. He sounded really cool, confident and when he stepped up to rise our darkness hour, that was awesome. I'll admit he performed better as Hot Rod than Rodimus but I usually call the character Rodimus 24/7 anyways. It was cool that he reprise in TFA even if it was for a thirty second cameo.

Dick Gautier is second, he does sound like a bot whose trying so hard to be as great as Optimus and it's pretty awesome that he does change his voice to sound younger when he became Hot Rod again.

It's a shame Ted Schwartz got recast as he didn't have that many major roles and his Rodimus sounds more like Judd Nelson to me.

Frank Welker as Hot Rod is just weird, it just feels weird to hear him voice him even if its a minor role. Had he been more than a place holder voice and his official voice I would have use his Fred voice. it'd be somewhat more suitable and surprisingly he never used that voice for any Transformer characters to my knowledge.

Paul Dobson is epic as the Energon version of the role, who is a battle hardened commander. He sounds so much like Michael Dorn it's uncanny. I also love that rumble in his voice.

Travis Willingham sounds good despite the limited material. I could see him doing his Roy Mustang for a more experienced Rodimus.

Peter Von Gomm is meh.

BONUS: Whenever I read the IDW MTMTE comics, I'm always hearing Kirby Morrow for the role. I mean OK yeah Kirby voiced Hot Shot in Cybertron (who is in many ways like Rodimus) but good lord he fits IDW Rodimus to a tee, I mean always consider him a rule of cool VA but he'd also be great at making him a respectable and (mostly) confident leader like when he voiced Cyclops for example. I also would love to see Josh Keaton and Eric Vale as Rodimus too.

1) Dick Gautier: Now this is what I hear whenever I think of Hot Rod and Rodimus. His use of the ol' "Bud Collyer Superman/Clark Kent" voice changing technique is really appreciated. Gautier's Hot Rod really sounded like a convincing teenager with a hotheaded attitude, while his Rodimus sounded more experienced and wise, yet very insecure. It helps that Rodimus had a lot of great moments that made him a lot more relatable. He doesn't trust his own abilities, which is why Rodimus always compelled me as a character. So, all in all, Gautier's performance as both Hot Rod and Rodimus is one of my favorite performances in the series.

2) Judd Nelson: His Hot Rod voice was excellent, but he really sounded too young for Rodimus. I wish his character hadn't been so wasted in Animated because I really liked Nelson's voice in there. His performance, however, is really solid, and I really give him props for that. So overall great Hot Rod voice and decent Rodimus voice in the movie, a lot of wasted potential in his Animated take.

3) Ted Schwartz: Although he was originally chosen as Rodimus' regular voice, I can see why he was replaced. Like Nelson's original take, his voice sounds too young for Rodimus. It would be perfect for Hot Rod, but yeah, it's odd hearing that coming from Rodimus. His performance is still pretty solid, so that's a plus.

4) Frank Welker: Surprisingly good, but I wish he had more material.

5) Travis Willinghan: Pretty cool, but like Welker, he needs more material.

6) Paul Dobson: Works for his version.

7) Peter Von Gomm: He's pretty cool, but kinda meh.

I actually prefer Dick and Ted over Judd, think the movie version was young and in Season 3 he was older but I think the other two have more authority, same with Dobson. I prefer Judd's Animated take and Van Gomm sound decent. Frank also sounds decent, too bad he hasn't gotten much, well yet anyway.

Judd Nelson I guess cuz he was the original. Ted Schwartz sounded a lot like him. I was gonna ask why they didn't keep him, but it's probably because they wanted Rodimus to sound older and more seasoned which Dick Gautier does.

I know he was a totally different version, but Paul Dobson seemed way too deep for Rodimus. It was a little weird to hear. He was good as the old, legendary warrior version, but as I said I didn't expect him to sound like that.

Gautier is both HOT ROD and RODIMUS PRIME!!! He really digs deep into Rodimus' doubts and weaknesses, and that's what made Rodimus a nice character for me. I loved the fact that Gautier's Hot Rod voice is higher and more arrogant sounding than Rodimus' voice (especially in the Rebirth), yet making him a very loyal and friendly character, despite his arrogant sound. Very likeable character.

@Patrick Well, he probably sounds different because one is a 27 year old Judd and the other is a nearly-fifty year old Judd.

Plus the fact that they're not the same Rodimus Prime. Different interpretations of the character.
