Gonzo

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Gonzo with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Muppets

Gonzo is a supporting character from Jim Henson's Muppets franchise. He is a loveable, long-nosed...purple...thing with a passion for performance art and stunts. Although he's friends with all of the Muppets, there's a special place in his heart for Camilla

EDITOR'S OPINION

For the majority of Gonzo's appearances, Dave Goelz performed him. As with literally every single Muppet character, Dave created an instantly recognizable physical and vocal performance, embuing Gonzo with zany mannerisms and a raspy voice.

Russi Taylor voiced the baby version of Gonzo in the 1980s animated series. Russi does very well at creating a voice that is noticeably young, but also distinctly Gonzo.

For the 2018 Muppet Babies series, Ben Diskin stepped behind the mic. Ben's Gonzo is different enough from Russi's, yet still believable as being a young Gonzo.

Dave gets my vote, but both Russi and Ben are perfect fits for the young version.

*Once again, a big thanks to BTVA'er Ghosty404 for the clips!

Dave's performance as Gonzo is my favorite of all the Muppet performances. He has such a quirky delivery, I like the unique and somewhat raspy voice he gives the character, and his energy is off the charts.

Russi is good for baby Gonzo, though I do think at times she can sound somewhat annoying.

Ben I think is much closer to how I would think a younger Gonzo would sound, and Ben does a really fun job in the role.

Between the two kid versions I would take Ben but Russi could have been a good Toad

1. Dave. Originated the character, helped make his personality, and still sounds just as good as the character today as he did when he first started (even better, at times). What more could you ask for?

2. Hal Rayle (from the convention/scrapped footage). From the small sample size, it seems Hal actually would have probably done a pretty good job with the character. The impression isn't perfect, per se (it's a little too falsetto for my taste), but it's certainly good enough at capturing both the voice and personality of the character. Wish we could have heard what he did in the actual show.
You can watch the convention clip here, if you're interested:

For Baby Gonzo, I prefer Ben. He does a good job at capturing Dave's essence as the character while still making him sound suitably young. Russi isn't bad by any means, but it is a bit too obviously a female voice, which makes it feel somewhat off to me.

Dave Goelz IS the character.. honestly, he literally IS the character. He's been playing Gonzo for about 42 years now, and has never had any trouble slowing down with him. Dave just embodies Gonzo so much that it's extremely hard to see the character be someone else.

Russi and Ben does a pretty good younger Gonzo. While Ben sounds closer to Dave's Gonzo, I think Russi has this kinda charm with me. I find her Gonzo more endearing? I dunno.

Dave Goetz is easily the best.

Russi Taylor and Ben Diskin don't sound good to me.

And yeah, Russi does sound like Marge.

My vote is going to Dave Goelz for this one.

Russi Taylor & Ben Diskin don't sound right to me. Russi sounds like a higher pitched Marge Simpson & Ben Diskin just sounds like Hoagie P Gilligan.

@TheVocalMan20 That's actually still being looked into. He definitely recorded dialogue for it, but the thing that's up for debate is whether said dialogue actually made it into the show before it was cancelled. Animated Gonzo appeared in the show, but it was Baby Gonzo, not adult; so it's possible that that was just Russi again since she was already involved in that episode. Personally, I'm on the Russi side of the debate, but that's me.

@CerealBoxHead46 The image on LMM was an ending bumper from Muppet Babies, the one where Animal says “Go bye bye!” It was left over from the Muppet Babies side. There isn’t any audio of Hal’s Gonzo in the show, only at a convention.
