Sonic is the protagonist of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series, and the mascot of video game company Sega. He is a super-fast hedgehog capable of exceeding the speed of sound. Sonic has a laid-back, wisecracking personality and dislikes evil.
In the video game world, Ryan Drummond played Sonic from 1999 to 2004, starting with Sonic Adventureand ending with Sonic Advance 3. Ryan wanted to play Sonic in Sonic X, dubbed by 4Kids Entertainment in New York, but because he lived too far away (in San Diego), he was turned down in favor of Jason Griffith. In 2004, Sega decided they wanted consistency across Sonic media, so Jason then replaced Ryan as Sonic's voice in the video games, starting with Sonic Rush and Shadow the Hedgehog in 2005 and ending with Sonic and the Black Knight in 2009. His voice clips from various games (primarily Sonic 2006) were recycled for Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing in 2010, the last time his voice was used for Sonic. In 2010, the voice cast was replaced yet again because the contract with the Sonic X voice actors expired, and opted not to renew it in favor of new voice actors. As of Colors, Sonic is currently voiced by Roger Craig Smith in all media for the franchise, including his cameo in the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph. In addition to the three main voices, Sonic was previously voiced by Meg Inglima for the educational PC game, Sonic's Schoolhouse.
