Papa Smurf is the leader (and third oldest) of the Smurf clan in the Smurfs franchise. A wise and caring leader, many Smurfs seek guidance and wisdom from him. He has a white, bushy beard and a red cap, which helps differentiate him from an army of blue woodland creatures.
Don Messick was the first VA to voice Papa Smurf. I'm not gonna' lie, I've never really found Don's voice to be that well-suited to the character. I mean, his performance is kind and caring enough for the whole "loving father-figure"-aspect, but the higher-pitched raspiness doesn't do it for me, unfortunately.
In the Magic Flute movie, Michael Sorich took over the role, in which he gives Papa a much more regal-sounding voice.
Jonathan Winters voiced Papa in the two live-action Smurfs movies. I really like Jonathan's voice. It's deep and gruff, without sounding monstrous or angry - a great voice for the old, wise Papa Smurf.
For the animated or DTV spin-offs of the live-action movies, as well as the video game, Jack Angel took over. Jack sounds enough like Jonathan as to convince younger viewers that it's the same VA, while at the same time doing his own thing.
