Professor James Moriarty is "a man of good birth and excellent education, endowed by Nature with a phenomenal mathematical faculty." At a comparatively young age, he wrote several groundbreaking works, including The Dynamics of An Asteroid, a treatise so mathematically perfect that it was deemed beyond criticism. However, he proved to be a man of strong criminal tendencies, and, after losing his academic post, he made himself the directing force behind many of London's crimes. He became known as the Napoleon of Crime, "the organiser of half that is evil and of nearly all that is undetected." As such, he remains confident that he is untouchable - as long as the crimes he plans are never tied to him, he is free to continue with impunity.
