EDITOR'S OPINIONFor the majority of his appearances, veteran voice actor Richard Steven Horvitz provides Alpha 5's voice. Alpha 5 was one of Horvitz's earliest roles, and arguably one of his most iconic. His high-pitched voice, with an almost constantly-fretting delivery and cadence, combined with the suit-actors shuffling/waddling movement, created the most endearing character of the franchise.
When the decision was made to to create a contemporary, live-action Power Rangers film, comedian Bill Hader was chosen to give his interpretation of the character. As far as feature film celebrity castings go, I think was one of the smarter choices, especially given Hader's range and overall voiceover skill (despite "celebrity status"). In both design and voice, Hader's Alpha 5 is reminiscent of his original portrayal, yet also new and unique. He has a similarly higher-pitched voice, but it's a little more subdued and not so frenetic. I think of Hader's vocal performance as being Horvitz's, but dialed back from 11 to 8.
Both voice actors are great in the role for different reasons, but in the end, Horvitz is waddling away with my vote.
