Princess Celestia is the long-serving ruler of Equestria, and mentor to Twilight Sparkle. Concerned that her student was prioritising books and learning over social interaction, she sent Twilight to Ponyville with the express instructions to make friends. Once Twilight learned the value of friendship, Celestia had her send regular letters detailing what she'd learned in specific situations. Later, all this was revealed to be behind-the-scenes training for Twilight to become a Princess, and, eventually, Celestia's replacement.
