Giovanni dela Segadora was a minor noble in the Bull Duchy.  Unable to gain power on his own due to his status in the Duchy, he used his political skills to cultivate the new Duke - Ovidio - into giving him a high position within his circle at court.  However, when his patron was killed by Sandro (with help from his own sister, Lucretia), he elected to follow the path of the Necromancer and became a Vampire Lord.  Now he rules the Vale of Shadows near his old Duchy, biding his time until he is ready to make his move.

EDITOR'S OPINION

I'd say this is Fred's best role in the franchise.  He sounds commanding and calculating, easily fitting the role of an Undead Lord with his own secret agenda.  There is the minor nitpick of giving a Spanish accent to a character with an Italian name, but there's no question that Fred really makes it work.  Matthew is decent as the human Giovanni - slimy, manipulative, and power-hungry - but just lacks something when compared to Fred.
