Blade is a Marvel Comics superhero who first appeared in The Tomb of Dracula #10 (July 1973). Blade's real name is Eric Brooks and he was born to a prostitute in London in 1929. A vampire named Deacon Frost killed and feasted on Blade's mother during his birth, but the attack passed along enzymes onto the baby, giving him similar abilities akin to a vampire. Orphaned, Blade was raised in the same whorehouse where his mother used to work and as a child, he saw an old man being attacked by vampires. Blade drove away the vampires and saved the old man, who turned out to be a vampire hunter. Jamal Afari, the old man Blade saved, trained the young Blade the art of hunting vampires, who quickly became efficient at it. However, Afari was turned into a vampire by Dracula and Blade was forced to kill his mentor. Blade dedicated his life as a vampire hunter to stop vampires from harming anyone. Blade has many abilities similar to vampires including superhuman strength, superhuman reflexes, superhuman durability, heightened senses and a healing factor, but he isn't harmed by sunlight. Blade is also accomplished in various fighting styles and is a master in using sharp-edged weapons such as knives and swords. However, like all vampires, he has a thirst for blood, which he controls with a special serum he injects into his system.
