Balin

Comparison of the voice actors who have been the voice of Balin with sound clips and images.

Number of Comparisons: 2
Franchise: Lord of the Rings

Balin, son of Fundin, is the second eldest of Thorin Oakenshield's Company (after Thorin himself), and one of only two members (Thorin again being the other) to have witnessed Smaug's sacking of Erebor.  He acts primarily as the group's lookout, as well as the de facto leader when Thorin is absent.  He also seems to have established a particularly close friendship with Bilbo Baggins, as he is the only member of the Company known to have visited Bilbo after the events of The Hobbit.  Sometime after this last visit, Balin assembled a team (including fellow Company members Oin and Ori) to re-establish Dwarf rule in Moria.  However, they met resistance from Orcs, and Balin was killed, with his followers being wiped out shortly afterwards.

He is voiced by Don Messick in the Rankin/Bass movie, and Victor Raider-Wexler in the Sierra-produced video game.

EDITOR'S OPINION

I can get what they were going for with Don - Balin IS the second eldest of the group, after all - but he comes across as a bit too wizened, and not as a capable second-in-command.  He's not bad, but I can't imagine this as the dwarf who tried to retake Moria.  Victor, meanwhile, is a lot more regal and sonorous, which makes it easy to see why Thorin would delegate to him (and how he could convince his fellows to join him on his quest).  Therefore, my vote's on Victor.
