Bruce Banner

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Bruce Banner with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Hulk

Bruce Banner is a physicist who was the victim of the explosion from a gamma bomb he invented. When under great emotional stress or angry he transforms into the Hulk. He is often pursued by the armed forces; seen as a danger to the public. Bruce is a very intelligent man and wants nothing more than to find a cure to rid himself of the Hulk. He loves Betty Ross even though her father is leading the manhunt against him. On some occasions Bruce is capable of fully controlling the Hulk but when not in control Betty is the only person capable of calming him down.

Another one of Marvel and its shows random casting changes but Kevin is decent, a line or two is deliveried oddly sometimes though. And his answer for when Black Panther asks if he is okay sounds sounds less like he just survived a near death experience and more like if he was asked if he wants more Doritos.

Kellen is one of the better performances from that game but a little too nasally for my taste.

Hi, I recorded a clip of Arin Hanson (Egoraptor) voicing Bruce Banner in the 2016 Marvel Ultimate Alliance re-release and uploaded it to my YouTube channel. I hope this is useful and lays to rest the "did Egoraptor voice Bruce Banner?" debate.

"There's a thin line between good and bad. I walk that line every single day. When I stray from it... people die. My name is Bruce Banner and this is me. I'm not a person anymore. I'm the Hulk. I did this to myself, all in the name of science. This is me. All that I've become. I'm a big, green time bomb. And I'm ticking..."

Civil War 2 was a Bad Comic for a Lot of Reasons for me, but the biggest problem for me was Bruce Banner's REALLY Poorly Handled Death......

Seriously Marvel?

Anyway, here are My Top 5 Favourite Bruce Banner Voices:

5. Michael Bell/ Michael Masse
4. Sebastian Spence
3. Andrew Kavadas
2. Gabriel Mann
1. Neal McDonough

Future VA Suggestions:

Eric Stuart would be solid as Doctor Banner, using a more solemn, American accented version of his Intellectual Bastion Misawa voice.

On Reflection, I think Tahmoh Penikett would also be solid as Bruce, using a more intellectual version of his Steve Trevor Voice.

I also Recommend Keythe Farley, Robert McCollum, George Newbern and Paul Blackthorne.

VC thoughts update

Michael Bell was really great as Banner. IMO, this is the closest we ever got to Bill Bixby reprising the role. He's likeable and friendly yet terrified of losing control of himself and harming anyone around him.

Peter Cullen sounds pretty good too. His delivery is pretty good, and he really manages to make Banner sound like an okay guy to hang around with.

Neal McDonough is pretty boss too. Like Bell, he puts so much emotion into the role and he really managed to sound like a tortured soul.

Bryce Johnson also sounds pretty good. He fits the more scared Banner perfectly.

Gabriel Mann also sounds good. He's pretty fitting for a Banner who is more in control of the creature.

I also enjoyed Ron Perlman, Robin Atkin Downes, Andrew Kavadas, Ken Kramer, Edward Norton and Fred Tatasciore in the role.

Paul Soles is pretty solid as an early take on the character.

Eric Bana, Michael Massee, Jesse Burch and Sebastian Spence don't leave a big impression on me.

I'm quite surprised to see Gabriel Mann and Bryce Johnson taking the lead in this one.

Granted, I haven't seen Gabriel's full performance in Wolverine and the X-Men but his voice clip here just sounds average to me. Due to how young the voice sounds, along with the brooding tone, I could almost mistake him for an angsty teenager. It's not the worst voice for Banner to have but I certainly wouldn't consider it the best either.

As for Bryce... In my opinion his voice sounds way too young to pull off this role. Not only that but his acting is pretty bad in this clip too (he's really hamming it up) so I'm honestly baffled as to why he's currently so favoured. Despite seeing Hulk Vs. I found his performance in it very forgettable.

I won't bother commenting on the other actors here as they're not really noteworthy in my opinion. That said, I do have a soft spot for Paul Soles version of Banner, the novelty of his old school performance is quite charming.

Anyway, my pick for best Bruce Banner would have to be Neal McDonough. Not only does he sound age appropriate but he's also got the gravitas to pull off a dark and serious character like this without it coming off as forced. I have no issues with his acting and thought he did a great job being a cold, reserved scientist as well as a desperate emotional wreck when the situation called for it.

Overall I think he has all the right tools for this role and I seriously hope he gets to reprise it someday, it would be great to hear him in new material.

This wasn't the easiest compare for be to vote for as I wasn't too sure who to go with. Bruce Banner needs to be someone who sounds intelligent, resourceful but also full of remorse and terrified of what he is capable of but still continues moving forward in the hopes to find a cure or control the demon within.

I think I'll have to go with Neal McDonough as I feel he captures most of the qualities needed for Banner. He sounds intelligent but also scared of the power he has.

Gabriel Mann would be my second favourite , he has a great voice though what holds him back is that we never really get to see him voice the Banner who is scared of his power, by EMH he's finally tamed Hulk. I like it but we never get to see him go the extra mile.

I get why I lot of people loved Fred Tatasciore's take on Banner as I mean he is the voice of The Hulk, why wouldn't he be the voice for him. I get that he and Hulk are one in the same but I dunno even having watched that episode of Agents of S.M.A.S.H that Banner was in, I'm not really feeling it. To me he sounds too deep for Banner and I know this is one of the lightest sounding voices he's capable of. Then again he has yet to voice a version of Banner that is the more timid and scared Banner, maybe if he got to do that maybe I could finally be swayed over to his take. I do like the performance but I just don't agree with the pitch of the least for now.

I also really love the performances by Michael Bell, Robin Atkin Downes, Andrew Kavadas and Sebastian Spence, they all sound intelligent, scared and even have remorse in their actions.

Ron Perlman is maybe the only other VA here other than Fred who did Hulk and he does play Banner intelligently but I dunno he just doesn't seem like the best fit for the role, he's too deep sounding and a bit too serious in the role.

Peter Cullen sounds too gooberish for the role IMO.

Edward Norton is alright but I never liked him as Banner but his voice does work.

Eric Bana I didn't care for as Banner and his voice is too deep.

Bryce Johnson only plays the scared Banner and not the more intelligent version of Banner which is very unfortunate, still he showed a lot of promise. FUN FACT: Bryce Johnson wasn't originally cast as Bruce, that was Trevor Devall who had recorded as Banner. It's very unfortunate he was recast since I think Trevor could have been a lot better than Bryce, even he was disappointed.

Ken Kramer is great for the old Bruce Banner he portrays but as a traditional version, he wouldn't work at all.

I'm voting for Neal for now....until Fred can impress me.

BONUS: I think a VA like James Arnold Taylor or Richard Ian Cox could maybe work as Bruce Banner.
said at 4:16 AM on Thu Apr 28 2016
Jesse Burch is alright all things considered, I will admit that he's more fitting than Fred Tatasciore ever could be.

I mean I get that Fred voices Hulk and thus he should be Banner but Fred's voice is just too deep for Banner. Jesse's much lighter voice is definitely more fitting sounds more right.

With that said, This lack of consistency with the casting is getting very annoying.

@Nightmare Crusher Wow, that didn't take long. A single Google search was enough for me to crack the case. First of all, this is the page on Arin's website that I mentioned.
However, it was another page I found that led me to figure out the full story.
This was a contest to be the voice of either Jean Grey or Bruce Banner in MUA. There is also a bonus feature in the game showing contestant entries for Jean Grey and Namor, not Bruce Banner. Anyway, the most interesting part is that at the beginning of the feature is a note that none of the entries they received were used in the game. Basically, Arin was one of the contest, however they were all scrapped in favor of professional actors for whatever reason.

@NCZ I kinda figured as much, shame though since Arin does deserve to be on the site.
Should we add a disclaimer to the VC stating this new find?
said at 5:59 AM on Tue Jun 3 2014
@Nightmare Crusher
To add (and prevent outsider confusion), Namor was a part of the contest. He was added in after submissions for Bruce Banner were closed.

Given Hanson's website and the fact that the Banner auditions were not featured, it drew anyone who owned the game or not to make that conclusion regardless of the reality. What a nasty trick.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 8:01 AM on Tue Jun 3 2014

I've recently become a fan of the 70s Hulk series with Bill Bixby(he was a great actor, R.I.P.). Hypothetically speaking, if he were on here, how many votes do you think he'd get?

Out of everyone here, I pick Gabriel Mann, I also liked Bryce, Michael, Neal, and Fred as well(cool that he got to take a shot at Banner for once).
said at 7:25 AM on Wed Jun 11 2014

Now that's an interesting question? He would get a lot of votes.

But man, I'm impressed with Michael Bell as Banner. His voice is probably the closest thing we'll ever get as a Bixby-sounding voice. Unless, someone I know gets a chance to play Banner.

My friend Cal Nguyen is a professional actor. He also does a very good Bixby impression. I knew about him when I heard he needed a guy to play certain character in his fan parodies of the 70's Hulk series. Cal was playing Banner, and l got that certain character mainly because Cal felt it didn't sound as forced as the others and because he was impressed that such a young guy (I was 18 at the time) could do a near perfect Hulk voice without hurting his throat. We haven't done any more parodies for over 2 years, which is a shame, because I was also going to play Thor and Daredevil in future parodies. Cal has the videos on his Facebook.

Gabriel gets my vote for doing a good Banner.

Bryce may the popular choice but to me he is only decent.

Robin does a really good Banner too by making him sound intelligent & like a proper scientist.

Neal does a really good take on Banner, until recent media he was my favourite Banner.

It's good 2 hear Fred do Banner for once. He did really well & I hope I hear more of him in the future.

Ron did ok as did Andrew & Michael Massee.

Eric & Edward are better in live action than voice acting.

While whenever I read the comics I hear Richard Ian Cox as Banner, of the people who played Bruce, I'll go with:

1. Fred Tatasciore-I was a little afraid his Banner would sound too close to his Beast, but this was a pleasant surprise. I also like that slight air of jackass Fred gives Banner.
2. Bryce Johnson-Does a very good depiction of classical Bruce Banner, the suffering "Lonely Man" cursed with a monster of his own making.
3. Gabriel Mann-Very good, an obvious nod to Edward Norton in his voice and he does come off as sympathetic and intelligent, I just think Bryce did it a bit better.
4. Robin Atkin Downes-I actually really like Downes in the part. He sounds intelligent and a man who's been through the ringer but is at a higher point in his life. Kudos for that.
5. Andrew Kavadas-Of the remaining VAs he was the only one to leave an impact on me. Everyone else was just 'meh' or the standard "old timey superhero" voices that grind my nerves.

@Nightmare Crusher Well, this particular Banner takes place in an alternate future (one where Victor Von Doom basically "saves Bruce's life" from the gamma radiation), so this isn't the "my life sucks because I'm constantly on the run"-Banner. This is a "I'm Doom's top scientist, but I've had enough of it"-Banner.

Oops, forgot. So yeah, he's basically a guy who's tired of being Doom's b**ch. So that's why he seems like a jerk.

And yes, those are big glasses.

Bryce Johnson sounds a bit too "woe is me" which is not my personal preference for the Banner character. Neal and Gabriel are tied for the best imo

Gabriel Mann really captured Bruce Banner's intellect best, so he gets my vote. That said, Neal Mcdough and Robin Atkin Downes also do a good job with the role.

I'll, for now, give it to Gabriel Mann. He sounded very much like the intelligent, tortured genius; always on the edge, but never too panicky like Bryce Johnson was, trying to fight the Hulk within. A close second would be Robin Atkin Downes, followed by Neal McDonough.

Also, if I was to pick a new VA for Bruce Banner, I wouldn't mind hearing Nolan North having a crack at it. After hearing that low, whispery tone of David from The Last of Us, it made me think... That kind of low, hushed whisper... would REALLY work well for reflecting a shattered psyche like Bruce's. A tortured individual on the edge between man and monster, trying to contain his inner rage, but occasionally snapping and losing it.

Only, of course, the voice would need to be executed in a less... 'creepy' way, and make it sound more tragic. Plus, as we've seen from his role as Superboy, he can nail the rage of Banner's that builds up to his transformations into the Hulk.

But casting Bruce a new VA makes me realize... WHY is it that Jeph Loeb, who is supposedly trying to cash in on the Cinematic Universe, is not using Bruce. Y'know, the guy behind the Hulk, who we saw more of in the movies than we did Big Green. The guy who gave us the second side of Hulk's story, and made things interesting on a whole new level...?

Remember HIM, Loeb? Remember HIM?

@Lion's Edge

That is a very good question, especially considering one of the things fans really liked in the film was Tony's interaction with Bruce. My only guess, given Loeb's thought process regarding cartoons, is that he thinks kids would find Bruce is boring.

Random thought: I would gladly exchange all three of Marvel's current cartoons, as well as "Agents of SHIELD", for a "Science Bros" sitcom. :-P

I'm not quite ready to make my judgement call on this yet, but why haven't they had Fred Tatasciore take a shot at Bruce? I mean, he obviously has the range to do a great Bruce Banner and it's always awesome when an actor is versatile enough to play both the man and his monster counterpart (Dee Baker as Connors/Lizard), so why hasn't this happened yet? Anyway, I'll be back to give my full opinion on this one later, I just thought I would say that now.

@PsychicVoiceSpy After listening to the clips again (and a little YouTube searching), I've decided that I'm voting for Neal McDonough for the time being. He sounds smart, world-weary, like a grounded believable person, but not a total nut or crybaby like some of the other versions of the character I've seen.

My second favorite is Gabriel Mann. Bryce Johnson was okay, but he was too much of a panicky, two-dimensional nutball and he wasn't that interesting, IMO.

Question: Why isn't Arin Hanson's compare here? I want to believe he's in this game, I really do, but there are no clips anywhere that back up the internet's claim.

@VGAfanatic Yeah, to my knowledge, he won a contest allowing him to voice Banner, but something happened and his voice material was unused. Other sources claimed that his voice was only in the Wii version of Ultimate Alliance, while another source claims he's in the next-gen versions. I have heard every video where it is supposedly him, but I am a big Robin Atkin Downes fan, and all of those are very obviously his voice.

@VGAfanatic Why hasn't he been added when there is no audio or visual proof that he ever voiced the character?
That truly is a riddle

 1 Shout Out!
Paul Soles: Again a dated performance, but I think he does a better job as Bruce than as Spider-Man. 5.5/10

Peter Cullen: Cullen sounds generic and I don't find he has much range. 4.5/10

Michael Bell: A little too high pitched and cartoony for Bruce, but this is one of Bell's better performance. 6/10

Ron Perlman: Perlman, I find is too deep and doesn't sound smart enough. 6/10

Neal McDonough: He was fantastic in this role, as he sounds smart and calm, while also sounding disturbed and like there's something inside him that is wrong. 10/10

Eric Bana: Bana gets the disturbed and calm side down very well, but I do believe that he sounds a little monotone though. I still like his performance, both in the movie and in the game. 7.5/10

Michael Massee: Massee does a really good job as well, sounding very calm and smart, but still good-hearted. 9/10

Andrew Kavadas: Kavadas is another good performance as Bruce, as he sounds bitter about the Hulk. 8.5/10

Robin Atkin Downes: Downes does a really good job at capturing the smart and calm side of Bruce, and I wouldn't mind seeing him do the voice again. 8.5/10

Edward Norton: Norton was perfect casting in the film, as he sounds very disturbed, calm, and intellectual, all at the same time. 9.5/10

Ken Kramer: Kramer works for the interpretation in the movie as a broken old man, and for that, I am giving him a 8/10

Gabriel Mann: Mann, like McDonough, is perfect for the role, as he sound very disturbed and intellectual, and like he's trying to fight against his inner rage. 10/10

Bryce Johnson: Johnson is great for an extremely nervous Banner, except he sounds like that all the time and isn't very calm. Still, he is great for what I said about what he was trying to do. 9/10

Overall, Gabriel Mann and Neal McDonough are my two favorites, with a slight edge to Mann, with Edward Norton being a close second and Bryce Johnson at third.

Another opinion change, but after an archive binge of the Hulk's guest appearance on Wolverine and the X-Men, the Hulk's debut on EMH, and Hulk VS., I'm gonna change my vote to Bryce Johnson. He did a good job capturing the tortured side of Bruce Banner.

Bryce is the best here because it really digs deep into Bruce's psyche, how he is so scared of the monster inside him and wants to protect everyone from it, while being tortured from it.

FYI some sites state that Arin Hanson (AKA EgoRaptor to some) voiced Bruce Banner in Ultimate Alliance.
Some sources say that he won the contest but due to time contraits never actually got his voice into the game.
Other sources state that he voiced Bruce for the PSP, PS3 and Wii versions of the game.
Robin Atkins Downes did the voice for Xbox and others.

I got this clip from an Xbox source.

If anyone can find a PS3 or Wii clip and if it sounds different I'll add it. If it sounds the same as Robert's then I guess Arin never did voice Bruce after all.
