Number of Comparisons: 3
Franchise: Gintama

Shinpachi Shimura is one of the main protagonists of Gintama. A samurai in training (or maybe just a sentient pair of glasses?), Shinpachi wants to rebuild his father's dojo, and joins Odd Job out of admiration for Gintoki Sakata's samurai spirit. Compared to many other characters in the series, Shinpachi is more normal, and often plays the audience surrogate by comedically retorting to other characters' hijinks. Even so, Shinpachi is plenty strange himself, especially in his fanatical obsession with pop idol Otsu.

Shinpachi was first dubbed into English by Sentai Filmworks in the Benizakura compilation movie, where Mark X Laskowski played him. Later on, when Ocean Productions and Crunchyroll dubbed the third series, Cole Howard took on the role. In the Miami-based Hulu dub of the first series, Clay Cartland donned the glasses.

EDITOR'S OPINION

While Shinpachi is probably as weird as the rest of the cast, he's still the series' designated straight man. Having an actor do a silly character voice for him, let alone one that sounds like a bizarro-world Jason Alexander or Gilbert Gottfried, just misses the point. Cole Howard is the only one plays Shinpachi naturally, making him the clear winner.
