EDITOR'S OPINIONAnd now you shall all witness the Voice Compare for the almighty Serpentor from G.I Joe for THIS I COMMAND! Okay I suppose that was a fairly cheap reference but still Serpentor is the latest G.I Joe character to receive a VC here.
In the original series (and Movie) he was voiced by Dick Gautier in which is his most prominent role in his voice acting career (in which being the 2nd guy to voiced Rodimus Prime in the original Transformers series comes close). While Dick often hams it up as Serpentor which does work as it suits Serpentor's fairly theatrical persona. (But to be fair Dick's performance also does fit Serpentor when he can have a more menacing moment kind of like his introduction as you can hear here.)
When DiC took over in making the show most to all of the cast were replaced by Canadian Voice talent and Maurice LaMarche got to take over the role. It appears to be that Maurice tried to do something like Dick Gautier's work, even a casual viewer can tell that Serpentor sounds different in the DiC episodes but its not necessarily a bad voice. (And after all aside from Scott McNeil's masterfully done mimicry of the late great Chris Latta's Cobra Commander voice the "Stand-in" voices in the DiC episodes were usually pretty good at best.) While some might note on how Maurice's Serpentor voice and performance are not quite as over-the-top as Dick's handiwork (though whether if that's a good thing or not is up to you.) But in all fairness unlike how Serpentor was in the older episodes and the movie, Serpentor's role in the DiC episodes was a lot more short-lived and Maurice LaMarche did do well for what fairy little he got here.
Overall both did pretty well for this role, I am slightly going with Dick Gautier a bit more but both did well here.
