G.I. Joe G.I. Joe

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Roadblock with sound clips and images.
Franchise: G.I. Joe

Roadblock, is the codename for Marvin F. Hinton who was the original cook and heavy machine gunner of the G.I Joe series. Roadblock is also known known for his preference for talking in rhyme as well as being one of the most prominent African American characters in the series. Only ten character in the original series had more lines than did Roadblock, who had 346 lines. He also appeared in the 2nd season of the DIC series as well as one of the original Joe PSA's dealing with fallen power line. Due to problems with copyrights on the name "Roadblock" in the 2000s his character was often replace with that of Heavy Duty.

He did however make an appearance on the series G.I. Joe Resolute, where Steve Blum provided his voice.

In the original series his voice was provided by Kene Holliday, who although he has a number of acting credits to his name has only this role, to date, on his voice over resume.

VC thoughts update

I really like Kene Holliday the most here. His rhyming delivery is great and really makes Roadblock sound awesome and memorable.

Blu Mankuma (who played Roadblock in the DiC cartoon) also sounds great in the role. He has the delivery down and he has a pretty cool voice to boot.

Kevin Michael Richardson also works.

Steve Blum is okay, but not as memorable as the others.

I think I prefer Kene Holliday. KMR's pretty good, but I find Kene's performance to more unique.

Tie between Kevin Michael Richardson & Kene Holliday.

Holliday's constant rhyming got a little annoying at times, but his voice was really unique. I really enjoyed Kevin's acting since he made Roadblock super likeable, although it sounds like Richardson's previous characters and I think he'd fit Heavy Duty more.

Steve Blum is pretty good too, surprised that was him. Although, he sounds a little unnatural.

This is a tough one as I like all three of them.

I guess Kene Holliday is the most unique one here, he brings a unique and fun performance and delivery. His voice sort of reminds me a bit of the late James Avery.

Kevin Michael Richardson, he's so typecast and I'd argue it's a knock against him but he was really good in the role, one of the more fitting big guy characters he's done since 2010 and on. I sort of wish he had the chance to deliver his lines like Kene, now that'd be so cool.

Steve Blum is really impressive too, he does a good black guy voice.

I'll go with Kene since he's a bit more unique but KMR and Steve both do this character very well.

BONUS: Terry Crews seriously needs to play Roadblock someday, he'd be perfect. If not I could see Gary Anthony Williams or Dean Redman voicing Roadblock well.

I'm going with Kene. He has a cool sounding voice and suits Roadblock's way of talking.

Steve Blum is definitely likeable too. I can't believe that was him doing the voice. A good example of his range.

I think KMR works very well, but it seems like a painfully obvious typecast.

Also, hearing Kene's reminds me... Ernie Hudson as Roadblock, anyone?

@TylerMirage I initially thought Mr. T, but, what the hell... Hudson as Roadblock for the WIN!!!!

All of these guys are great and unique (compared to each other, at least). Kene has a nice "stylin'" voice, Steve's is definitely one of the more unique voices he's used, and KMR's voice is a good fit too, even if his casting was rather obvious.

KMR is taking my vote on this one.

I'll go with Kevin, but we need someone to use an original, more natural voice.

Steve Blum sounded a wee bit like Jim Cummings to a degree, but I love all those voice actors. Thou I must go with KMR as the best, and current pick for this character.

I went with Steve Blum; it's definitely one of his more different-sounding roles.

What is with casting directors today that drives them to cast KMR as the exact same character he plays in like 20 other shows? It really isn't funny anymore.

@CatsTuxedo Because he suits the roles.

@TheVengeanceKnight Correction: it's only one role he ever gets to play anymore, and that's the "big scary black guy". Transformers Prime? Young Justice? GI Joe? ThunderCats? Green Lantern? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? All the same character. To actually impress me with KMR anymore, he'll have to start taking some wildly different roles like he did with Joker, Demongo or Mr. Mxyzptlk, though it doesn't look like modern casting/voice directors will be that creative again anytime soon.

I'll give you ThunderCats and GLTAS, but the others? No.

Bulkhead may appear tough and scary, but he's actually quite a softy inside. Roadblock's friendly, fun-loving, and serves as a contrast between the tough-ass Duke and Scarlett. Shredder is a cold-blooded, sadistic killing machine.

I'd hardly place these three with the same category as each other, and with the same category as Panthro and Kilowog.

Crap, I forgot to mention his YJ roles.

J'onn J'onzz - He's tough, but gentle, not unlike Bulkhead, except his voice fits that description.

Doctor Fate/Nabu - OK, I'll give you that.

John Stewart - Haven't really seen enough of him to judge, though previous media appearances of him doesn't really fit "big scary black guy".

Mal Duncan - He's more or less the opposite of being big and scary. Just look at the last episode and how he was playing hero against Despero.

Bruno Mannheim - I'd hardly consider him big and scary.

Vykin - Don't really remember too much of him; I'll place him in the same category as John Stewart.

@CatsTuxedo I would hardly call Cleveland Jr. from The Cleveland Show a big scary black guy.

I will put it on my list to get a better clip for Holliday, that one doesn't quite do him justice. He is the easy choice for me on this one though.
