Mr. Slate

Comparison of the voice actors who have been the voice of Mr. Slate with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Flintstones

Mr. Slate is a supporting character from Hanna-Barbera's Flintstones franchise. A balding caveman with glasses, he is the hot-tempered boss of Fred and Barney's at the quarry.

EDITOR'S OPINION

For the majority of his appearances, the late great John Stephenson lent his gravelly (HA! Get it?) voice to Mr. Slate. John's resume has no shortage of boisterous, loud-mouth supporting characters, and Mr. Slate is just another iconic role of his.

For The Flintstones Kids, the young Mr. Slate (named 'Nate') was voiced by Frank Welker. Poor Frank is at a disadvantage here because he's voicing a kid-version of Slate. And unlike Fred or Barney, young Mr. Slate doesn't really have anything in his performance to make you think "Mr. Slate". It's just an ordinary kid voice.

Jeff Bergman took over the role for his brief appearance in a CN commercial. Jeff does a pretty good job, despite his limited material.

Stone Age Smackdown featured celebrity John O'Hurley as Mr. Slate. I really like O'Hurley as Mr. Slate. He doesn't try to be a perfect imitation of Stephenson, and his natural voice and cadence lends itself pretty well to a character like a loud-mouth, busy-body boss. I'd be completely okay if O'Hurley was the go-to Slate VA from now on.

2.) John O'Hurley
3.) Jeff Bergman
4.) Frank Welker
