As is tradition since the series's re-Awakening, Byleth is the avatar protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, though a decidedly blanker slate than Robin and Corrin. Waking up amnesiac, Byleth possesses the spirit of the goddess Sothis, something that for reasons that later become apparent make them a central figure between the three houses and the influential Church of Seiros. Byleth becomes a professor at the Garreg Mach Monastery and overtime leads their students into battle.
