Timmy Turner

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Timmy Turner with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Fairly OddParents

Timmy Turner is the main character of the Fairly Oddparents TV series from Nickelodean. Timmy Turner is a young boy whom is known as "An Average Kid that no one understands" with really inept parents and has to constantly deal with Vicki the Evil Babysitter however he also has two Fairy Godparents by the names of Cosmo and Wanda. Timmy gets to make wishes that his Fairy Godparents will magically grant and even though these wishes usually turn out badly Timmy still does have a strong bond with his Fairy Godparents. Timmy also has some unrequited romantic issues with Trixie Tang (he has an unrequited crush on her) and Vicki's little sister Tootie (she has an unrequited crush on him).

Today we open the Fairly OddParents VC section and who better to start this off with than the main character of the series TIMMY TURNER! In the pilot episodes of Fairly Oddparents Timmy was voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman. Mary's voice for the role had a very raspy boyish voice that did suit the role rather well. Mary's performance for the role did work fairly well for the role (and it works with how Timmy was a bit smarter in the earlier episodes.) But still Mary's work as Timmy Turner is a fine example of her work and an interesting change of pace as well (since she hardly ever did little boy voices).

Ever since the Fairly Oddparents series began Tara Strong took over the role and was a fine substitute for the late Mary Kay Bergman. While Tara's voice for Timmy was never as raspy as Mary's I did notice on how she did try to sound a bit more like Mary's voice did earlier in the series (and did a pretty good job at it too). Granted nowadays Tara's voice for Timmy has gone a bit higher and squeakier but of course it still works well with the role here. Unlike Mary, Tara has is known for voicing young boys well and this is no exception as she does a rather energetic performance that suits Timmy's childish persona rather well. Overall I am not entirely sure who to go with here as both of these ladies did pretty well with this role here.

Both do a decent job but Tara Strong is the one I think of when talking about Timmy's voice. She also manages to make the character sound distinct and memorable from other "ten year old boy" characters.

Mary Kay Bergman is pretty good for what she did but its a bit generic and not as memorable as Tara.

Tara's getting my vote.

Mary Kay Bergman gets my vote. They should've cast me instead oh Tara Strong for Timmy, since I do a perfect impression of Bergman's voice!

@cheesemuffin6 well maybe they wanted something different after she died by trying not to replicate someone who had passed away out of respect. Like what Mike Myers did for Chris Farley as Shrek

You know what I did vote at some point and I say Mary Kay in the end as I prefer the 90s Cartoon Network short over the series itself even if it wasn't very flattering looking

I'm used to Tara Strong, as I spent most of my childhood watching the TV series and didn't see the shorts from Oh Yeah until I got older, but I will say this;

I prefer the late Mary Kay Bergman

1. Mary's voice may not be as iconic as her successor when "Timmy Turner" is mentioned in conversation, but I feel that Mary Kay Bergman did a great job making Timmy "human." Timmy actually seemed like a real person in the shorts than in the series and Mary made him relatable (in my opinion).

2. Tara Strong, on the other hand is iconic and is compatible with Timmy Turner. She was the absolute best replacement. However, as many people pointed out, in the earlier episodes her voice sounded normal and not too high or low. She still does a great job providing Timmy's voice now, but it's gotten so high pitched that it's gotten kind of grating. Timmy is beginning to lose his personality, as he has been exaggerated in later episodes. Tara is still awesome nonetheless.

Still my vote goes to Mary.

Tara Strong did well in her earlier seasons, but I think I prefer her take in the middle seasons the most- it wasn't too high, but it wasn't too low, either. In the later seasons, though, it's gotten really high pitched and it no longer really sounds like a 10 year old boy (more like a 6-8 year old boy). Her acting's always been fairly solid, though.

The late Mary Kay Bergman only had those "Oh Yeah! Cartoons" shorts to work with, but still, she had a really good boyish voice for the part- it's just her delivery could get sort of mean-spirited at times, but at least it's preferable (imo) to where Tara is with the role nowadays, so I have to credit her for that.

@Dr.Who I think the main reason, like with Daran and Susanne, is voice direction.

Mary Kay sounds the most boyish, but also makes Timmy sound like a total jerk. Tara made him likeable, so she gets my vote.

How did The Fairly OddParents get it's name, and how does it even relate to the show itself? In the show itself it's "Fairy GodParents".

@CuriousUserX90 because they are fairly odd. odd meaning strange

@TurtleAnimaniac How Fairly Odd can Timmy's Parents be? They're not even in the Main Cast, it's more around Cosmo and Wanda.
said at 4:14 PM on Tue Jun 2 2015
@CuriousUserX90 That's the point. It's a pun on "Fairy Godparents." Fairy God, Fairly Odd... I'd say that fits Cosmo and Wanda to a tee. Although, to be fair, Timmy's parents ARE fairly odd...

@CuriousUserX90 actually Timmys dad is the center of most plots especially in latter seasons so is Mr. Crocker and Foop makes sense since they are the funniest characters

This one I really can't decide because they both did a good job. I find it interesting that he was originally voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman in the pilot episodes.

My favourite is Tara as she's the one I'm used to but Mary did not bad, in fact I didn't even know she voiced Timmy as I thought it was all Tara.

@Ross123 I once saw Mary Kay's clip on Cartoon Network on the late 90s sadly it was around the time she shot herself

I have to wonder how it would be like if Mary lived, Tara is good at first(most of the sample on her clip) but then she got too high for my liking(the last line about cookies)
said at 9:29 AM on Thu Jul 3 2014
@HienFan We can only wonder. I think Timmy's voice would be slightly lower if Mary was still voicing him, that's my thoughts anyway.

In the end, it really doesn't change anything since the show would still have gone on the way it has.
said at 11:10 PM on Thu Feb 19 2015
@Ross123 Well it gone in a rather obnoxious way ever since Poof was born and to be fair it wasn't just Timmy who got louder and louder and Timmy is tame compared to what happened to his Dad and Cosmo
said at 11:00 AM on Mon Feb 23 2015
@HienFan I stopped watching Fairly Odd Parents shortly after Poof was born. Like the majority of good shows out there, it declined in quality.

Therefore, I really can't say that there's a change in Timmy's voice.
said at 8:31 PM on Mon Feb 23 2015
@Ross123 Well it was louder after season 1 technically same with Cosmo, I was saying that they got higher when the show passed in general not when Poof is born, I think only Mr Turner shown a change after season 5, sounds a bit like Barney the Dinosaur's current voice

Ironically Chester here got better after season 2 instead

I like both, but I think Mary Kay Berman has my vote. She has an original boy voice which really makes Timmy sound initiative, and made him sound like a boy who is always left by his parents. R.I.P. Mary. If she was still alive, she would have improved as the show progressed.

Mary Kay's take is easier on the ears. It's not Tara's fault since she started out a perfect replacement, but the voice direction made Timmy sound more high pitched and obnoxious as time went by.

I really don't know who to vote, Tara is better than Maru Kay in the first season but since then she went downhill by a lot so I'm sitting out

I like Mary Kay Bergman's voice here and I respect that she originated the role, but I don't think it fits the character Timmy became as the show progressed. She sounds a bit more convincingly boyish, but her voice also kinda lacks the energetic, youthful quality Tara gave to Timmy.

Tara doesn't really make me think "realistic ten year-old boy" but she excels at portraying his fun-loving and innocent personality (even though he has his faults).

Mary does a convincing job at his snarky moments and making him sound his age, but Tara's voice also sounds less raspy (as the show progressed, anyway), more innocent and fun-loving, and just overall the more lovable of the two, IMO.

I also feel Tara got better once she stopped trying to make a more boyish voice by forcing too much rasp into it. I definitely prefer Tara's voice of the two for being the more youthful, energetic, and cute of the two, Mary did well, but I thought Tara's voice was more unique and enjoyable overall. Tara as Timmy is still a fond memory from my childhood.

I dont know why, but i decide for Mary, despite Tara is my favorite voice actor. She make better voice for 10-years old boy. But Tara make Timmy sound like 6-years old and 13-years old in once... and no boy, but tomboy!
said at 2:49 PM on Mon May 20 2013
I'm afraid that because they sound the same (in my ears at least) it is impossible to judge who is better. Tara may be iconic, but she is inconsistant, while Mary's acting leaves something to be desired.
I call tie. :)

To be honest, I have always preferred Mary Kay Bergman as Timmy Turner and that was also why I loved The Fairly Oddparents shorts on Oh Yeah Cartoons more than the actual show. She really did sound like a ten-year old boy and I almost forget that I am hearing a voice actress play a young boy.

Tara Strong, well she does a great job at capturing Timmy's energetic nature and she is still voicing him to this very day. But, I am sorry to say this, especially to the Tara Strong fans, I found her voice way too young and hyperactive to be a ten-year-old.

Don't hate me for saying this, but hey, we all have our tastes and you all are entitled to your own opinions.

They were both good! I guess I slightly prefer Tara because that's who I'm used to (it should also be noted that Tara later redubbed all of Mary's work for reruns of her episodes). Mary did sound a lot like a convincing boy, especially considering she usually did females, but I can believe it. This WAS MKB after all (she could've probably done a hundred different voices, and you wouldn't dream of considering them all coming from the same mouth). My only problem with her is that she sounds a TAD too old for the role. Her voice sounds like Timmy's about 13 or 14, wheres Tara has usually sounded age appropriate, but she's probably been sounding a little TOO young in recent seasons (but she's always sounded very much in-character). None of these voices are perfect IMO, but I guess I slightly prefer Tara, JUST slightly.

Another interesting tidbit: apparently Mary died the very day Fairly Odd Parents was picked up for series.
