Bulma Brief

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Bulma Brief with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Dragon Ball

Bulma is the main female protagonist of Dragon Ball. She can be bossy, annoying, and boy crazy. Because of her wide personality, and place in the story, she requires a very good and dedicated voice actress.

In the short lived 1989 dub of Dragon Ball from Harmony Gold USA (recorded in Hollywood, CA, USA) that only covered episodes 1-5, and Movies 1 and 3, Bulma was voiced by now well known LA voice actress, Wendee Lee in one of her first roles.

In the 1994 English dub of Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies from FUNimation/BLT Productions (recorded in Vancouver, BC, Canada), Bulma was voiced by Canadian VA Maggie Blue O'Hara. Unlike most of the cast, O'Hara did not reprise her role for the 1995 English dub of the Dragon Ball anime, although she later returned to the role in 2000 for the AB Groupe/Westwood Media/Ocean Studios English dub of the second half of DBZ for Canadian and European broadcast.

Lalainia Lindbjerg took over for Maggie for the short-lived 1995 English dub of the Dragon Ball anime, covering episodes 1-13. She also voiced Bulma for two scenes in the English dub of Movie 1 that were added in from episode 2 of the anime after Maggie initially left. She went on to reprise her role for the semi-short lived and heavily edited Saban/FUNimation/Ocean Studios English dub of Dragon Ball Z Seasons 1-2 (covering episodes 1-53/1-67 uncut), as well as the edited Saban English dub of DBZ Movie 3 and Pioneer/FUNimation/Ocean Studios' uncut English dubs of DBZ Movies 1-3.

In the later AB Groupe/Westwood Media/Chinook Animation/Blue Water dub of Dragon Ball GT for Canadian and European broadcast (recorded in Calgary, AL, Canada), Bulma was voiced by Kristen Nowosad.

In the AB Groupe/Westwood Media/Chinook Animation/Blue Water English dub of Dragon Ball for Canadian and European broadcast, Bulma was voiced by Leda Davies, who had earlier voiced Bulma's daughter, Bulla in the Blue Water English dub of DBGT.

Jodi Forrest is believed to have voiced Bulma for the English dub featured in European broadcast versions of the Dragon Ball movies and specials from AB Groupe.

When FUNimation initially took voice production of the franchise to their studio in Dallas, TX, USA with DB Movie 2, Bulma was voiced by Leslie Alexander.

For all Dragon Ball media (except for the first two DB movies and DBZ:Kai), Bulma is voiced by Tiffany Vollmer for FUNimation Entertainment.

For the recent English dubs of Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies from FUNimation, Bulma has been voiced by well known Texas VA, Monica Rial.

Honestly, yeah. They're tied in my mind as well. Monica has the stronger delivery, Tiffany has the more distinct voice. (Although, watching more of Super might have me slightly prefer Monica.)

Revisiting this.

Tiffany Volmer is easily the one who most embodies Bulma as a character - when she's talking smart, she sound smart. When she's getting mad, she sounds mad. When she's feeling down, she sounds down. And the quality of her voice has this almost snobbiness that fits a big city girl born and raised in privilege, not to mention she nails Bulma's emotionally wild comedic scenes. While she sounded unfitting and valley girlish, but she fast improved and is still the best English dub voice for Bulma. I just love her rendition.

Monica Rial is a close second to Tiffany, as I really like the voice she gives Bulma too, which emphasizes her flighty attitude and social, outspoken personality. The one issue I have is how she emotes. When she has to shout and go over-the-top with her emotions, she can sound a bit too grating.

Maggie Blue O'Hara is the best Ocean Group dub voice for Bulma. She just has such a cute, lovely voice and good line delivery. However, opposite of Monica, I feel she under-emotes too much. The scene in the first movie where she's shouting at Goku in the bathtub and throwing stuff at him ought to be performed with maximum anger, but Maggie didn't really give that.

Lalaina Lindbjerg is when the Bulma voice start to get less good. She's not awful, but the voice she uses is a little too shrill and high for Bulma, which is especially distracting in DBZ when she's older, and her line delivery is overdone in how crass and naggy it sounds.

Wendee Lee is also alright, but nowadays her voice is more recognizable and it isn't the best fit for Bulma.

Leslie Alexander's voice has charm to it, but she overacted even worse than Monica Rial ever has, making some of Bulma's lines sound more annoying than funny.

Leda Davies is wooden as heck, so I can't imagine how she could ever pull off Bulma's more emotive scenes. Kristin Nowosad can barely act and does nothing notable with the role beyond that obnoxiously over-the-top gasp. And Sharon Mann...what were they thinking there?

@Galactic_Cyrus A mainstream VA I can imagine voicing Bulma well would be Grey DeLisle. Yeah I know, she gets all the female roles these days. But a variation of her Frankie Foster voice and performance would suit Bulma well.

Tiffany Volmer's my choice. Monica Rial is good, but a tad generic, whereas Volmer nails the intellectual side of Bulma just as much as the flightier, sillier side.

I think its preety clear on this site that Monica`s performance in the early seasons of Kai were not her best. the reason for that was Monica confirmed in a panel with Caitlin Glass,Ray Chase and Max Mittelman that when she got the role she heavily took inspiration from Vollmer and by the androids saga well the rest is history.

great that Monica stop taking inspiration from Vollmer otherwise her Bulma voice wouldnt be the best as it is today.

I always thought Monica Rial was in the category of the replacements in kai that was better than the orginal. she really nails bulma so well, heck Rial fooled me for half a decade until i saw the behind the vas video for battle of gods, i thought volmer magically got better all of a sudden.

Volmer, im not a fan of her potrayl but i wouldnt say she was that bad as bulma she nailed her db version and she did had her few subtle moments done well, the thing is unlike the rest of the cast, volmer wasnt intersested in becoming a va but more of fashion designer/producer/actor whatever she just mostly sticked with vocing bulma i highly doubt if she reprised in kai it would be any better maybe if she focused on gaining more experince as a va more than it might have been on level of rial but still siding with the queen that is monica rial.

@mdalsted Seems unnecessary. Bulma is an older teenager/young adult to begin with and within each dub, her voice never changes solely according to her age.

@NCZ I think with Wendee Lee's take, some sort of this might be justified. Pretty different takes, in a way it's like Cullen's Optimus between the 1984 series of stuff, & the Bay live-action stuff.

@huzaifa_ahmed If they do make that decision, they might just update Wendee's clip from Super & remove her take from Dragonball. Or they'll add an additional entry.

@mdalsted I personally think an ideal Bulma VA should fit both the young and old versions of the character, it's one of the reasons Monica Rial isn't my favourite, she just sounds a little older than I would like.
Shaun Ince
said at 2:00 PM on Thu Sep 21 2017
@NitroEX That's an interesting point. You're right, the ideal voice has to fit both the younger & older versions of the characters. This is probably the reason why I'm not completely sold on her other voices, even the ones from the Canadian dubs. Some only fit the younger version & others fit the older version.

Yeah, my vote is going with Monica Rial for this comapre. Now while I admit that she's pretty intolerable in the Freeza arc she more than makes up for it in the Android Arc & the recent movies as well. Battle of Gods & Resurrection of Frieza is arguably some of her best handiwork as Bulma.

Maggie Blue OHara, Leda Davies & Lalaona Lindberg deliver some good performances as Bulma at least in the earlier iterations. Maggie sounds pretty intolerable in later stuff, but due to how rushed the latter part of the Ocean dub is, Maggie suffers from poor direction.

Wendee Lee. Had potential, but never really got a chance to shine.

Volmer. I always had some issue with. The valley girl inflection is way more apparent in the dub of Z more than Dragonball, but I don't really find her all that great. She's a tad overrated IMO. I didn't mid her so much in GT, but she is not that great in the Z dub to be completely honest.

Leslie Alexander. Sounds really grating to me.

Kristin Nowosad. Like a majority of the Blue Water castings for GT, this is pretty generic. Not all that special.

Jodi Forrest. Quite franlkly the most miscast of all the voices for Bulma. This movie has her sounding like a bad Arleen Sorkin impression. The performance in the DBZ movies is a whole other level of bizarre. There are numerous points where she sounds Irish in the role. It's cringy & hilarious at the same time.

This is not the easiest compare for me, I mean most of them are solid but nobody here truly here has me saying this is the perfect voice for Bulma.

Right now I like Monica Rial best. I find Rial an overused actor but after watching Resurrection 'F' a few weeks ago, I think she's my favourite. I dunno I just enjoy her the most in the role at least for now. She can be annoying and shrill sometimes but I feel she has the most personality. Plus it's amusing how much she and Megami33 in the TFS DBZA version sound like each other.

Tiffany Vollmer, Lalania Lindbjerg, Maggie Blue O'Hara and Leda Davies are kinda in the same boat for me. they're good and fit Bulma but they don't wow me.

Wendee Lee had potential....and i wish she had another chance to voice Bulma. She could have been my favourite with more time in the role and better direction.

Kiristin Nowosad's long gasp....hahahaha that's hilarious. It reminds me of when Pinkie Pie does her long gasp.

Jodi Forrest, you're playing Bulma NOT Harley Quinn.

I hope whoever voices her in Ocean Kai can knock my socks off. Personally I want someone new in the role someone like Maryke Hendriske, I could see her doing someone similar to her Susan Test but better.

Just to expand on that point, when I say all rounded I mean she's able to make Bulma sound not only intelligent but bold, dominant, caring, witty, energetic and overly wacky which I personally find very entertaining. Basically all the features she gives Bulma are nicely balanced making it very well rounded. I think she does a great job as the character.

I've changed my vote on this compare once before and I might do it again after this... but for the time being I'm changing my vote to Wendee Lee. She gave Bulma a more sweet and endearing sound than the others while still getting across her spoiled attitude. It would be nice if more of the Harmony Gold dub was around to listen to, seeing how obscure it is now. I kind of wish she could have played the part longer than she did.

I still like Tiffany Vollmer, now at my second place, and then I like Maggie Blue O'Hara enough to place her at third.

Since the the last time I commented here, I've started to dislike Monica Rial's Bulma more. There were moments throughout Kai where I thought she did pretty well, but on the whole I think she's too aggressive, annoying and shrill as Bulma.

I liked Tiffany Volmer's performance as Bulma best in Dragonball *gets pelted by rocks*.

Oh, god forbid I actually liked Volmer's rendition of Bulma. Sure, I'll admit I REALLY hated her valley girl tone in DBZ Seasons 3-5, but she really began to grow into the role as time passed, and she had a very unique, dynamic, and sort of sexy sounding voice.

The reason why I prefer her rendition of Bulma to Monica Rial's, who is my second favorite, is because Monica goes a little TOO overboard on the wacky and crazy side of things at times. That can get rather irritating and scary to say the least.

My favorites are:
1. Tiffany Volmer
2. Monica Rial

1. Monica Rial - Similar to Tiffany Vollmer's voice, only a little bit better. She sounds clearer, lighter, smarter, cuter, prettier, and more energetic in the role. The one complaint is how she can go a little TOO over-the-top and wacky at times, but she's usually very funny.

2. Tiffany Volmer - Her original "Z" performance was irritating and flaky, but her subsequent performances made up for it. She has a very unique, distinctive, even sexy sounding voice. She nails the ditzy, intelligent, and temperamental sides of the character perfectly. She and Monica are VERY close in my favor.

3. Lalainia Lindjberg - Is better for teenage Bulma than Tiffany and Monica. She's got an adorable sounding voice. Her acting could sometimes be off, but she usually performed the part to near perfection.

4. Maggie Blue O'Hara - Like the editor says, she's very much a smart ass, but that works well for Bulma. She has a beautiful, smart, spunky voice that really captures the character.

5. Leda Davies - Has a natural voice, but doesn't seem like much of an actress.

6. Wendee Lee - Decent, but I can't imagine Haruhi's voice coming from Bulma.

7. Leslie Alexander - Way too spazzy and the voice is too shrill. She gets annoying real fast.

8. Kristin Nowosad - That over-the-top gasp alone signifies that she's no good. Just...what WAS that?

9. UVA - Obnoxious as sin. A little bit Harley Quinn-esque, but even Harley was never THAT annoying. What is she even saying at the end there? It's so ugly sounding.

I used to like Tiffany Vollmer quite a bit, heck, I can still enjoy it somewhat now. However, listening to it now, I feel she made teenaged Bulma sound WAY too old. As an older Bulma, & Bulma in general she sounds like a total annoying, completely unlikabe *insert every single TeamFourStar line on how much of a b--ch she is* whose neck I want to snap almost every time I hear her voice.

Judging from the clips, I feel Wendee Lee would have been the most faithful to the Japanese, as well as the most enjoyable. I wish she would have played Bulma more.

Monica Rial isn't much more than a stone's throw less annoying than Vollmer, but she still manages to be a tad more likable and (in my opinion) an overall better actress.

Tiffany was just bad, obnoxious, and valley girl-esque in the early FUNimation Z dub. Later on, I feel Tiffany really grew into the role very nicely, particularly in Dragonball and in the redub of Z, IMO. It's a close call between the two for me, but Vollmer barely edges ahead, solely because Rial's Bulma can be just as obnoxious (and even rather scary) when she yells at others.

@OldSchoolFTW You know, I totally agree with that. If there's one major problem I have with her it's that I thought her voice sounded a little too old for sixteen year-old Bulma and she didn't sound quite sweet enough when the situation called for it. @Kioea

Ah, I see. I always asumed Watson was just an executive at FUNi, as opposed to actually in the booth directing. Terry Klassen speaks of Barry Watson's trips to Vancouver to
checking up on the Ocean Group dub.

Great insight on the subject, dude. Revealing stuff.

I'm torn between Lalainia and Tiffany, but I'm actually going to give it to Lalainia. She makes Bulma sound a little younger which she deserves, but Tiffany was also a great VA for Bulma.

Let's see here. My favorites (Like most people say) are Tiffany Vollmer and Maggie Blue O'hara, as I thought they captured Bulma's personality the best.

Monica Rial is... ok but I find the American accent she has a little distracting. Not complaining, just think it's distracting.

The rest aren't bad except for the UVA: HORRIBLE!!! She sounds more like Harley Quinn!

Bulma seems to have good luck with voice actors. With the exceptions of Kristen Nowosad, Leslie Alexander, and the Unknown voice, they're all pretty good. I'm going to have to agree that Lalainia Lindbjerg, Maggie Blue O'Hara, and Tiffany Vollmer are the best but the rest are all pretty fine as well. They all sound pretty similar so I don't really have a preference here.

@animenerd99 From what I've seen of the EuroCanadian dub of the Buu saga, Maggie Blue O'Hara continued to voice Bulma. The rumor about Jane Perry voicing Bulma probably stemmed from her voicing Bulma's MOTHER, and stuff was lost in communication. :P

@PurpleWarrior13 But from what i read Maggi left during the buu ar and jane voiced both bulma and bulma's mother i have some clips if you'd like to to send to you so you can check cause i'm not entirely sure even though the voice does sound different and alot older
PurpleWarrior13

@animenerd99 Alright, but from what I've seen of the Ocean Buu stuff (up until the episode "Feeding Frenzy"), it's still Maggie voicing Bulma. She's got a very distinctive voice, and I noticed no differences from the Android/Cell stuff.
Kioea
said at 7:15 AM on Thu Apr 23 2015
@PurpleWarrior13 She sounds different in the episodes after that, but right now I can't tell who it is. Sometimes it sounds like Maggie pitched up (bad recording quality?) and other times like a different person. What do you think? The relevant bit is 10 minutes in.

@Kioea Actually you may be right. I've even checked out episodes after that too, and it does sound like someone completely different. Not sure who it is though (and no they don't sound very good). I'm not familiar with Jane Perry's voice much at all, so I couldn't tell you if it was her. However, episodes pre-245 are DEFINITELY still Maggie.

THIS is definitely Maggie (skip to 30 secs in): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-tMHiPAXoA

And so is this (skip to 2:50): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lXTBULX0LY

But the very next time she appeared (the episode you linked to), it's someone different.

This is definitely that someone else (skip to 5:50): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vksWKP-5AXc

It looks like Maggie was replaced for whatever reason after episode 245. I just can't tell whose voice that is in later episodes.

said at 11:44 AM on Thu Apr 23 2015
@Kioea Okay, so I shot a quick email to Jane Perry through her LinkedIN, and here's what she said:
"Thanks for your enquiry. Gosh, this is going back a while! No...I don't think I voiced Bulma herself at the end of DBZ. As far as I recall, I was just in there doing the dubbing from Japanese to English. Hope this helps!"

I guess it's possible she was still Bulma since the character was so minor at that point, but I'm not familiar with Jane's work, so I couldn't tell you if that sounds like her or not. I do believe it's someone else, but I have no idea who it is... Sorry!

Complete shot in the dark, but how about France Perras given her role as Terra in Ys VI?

Seems unlikely to be someone already in the cast (Okuma, Germain, Weseluck), thought as a consolation prize Weseluck is a dead ringer for Bulla. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vksWKP-5AXc#t=16m31s

@PurpleWarrior13 Glad to have helped a little. Whether it's Jane, France Perras, or someone else, I think it's fair to say that, of Bulma's three Ocean voices, that one's definitely the weakest. And I agree that it's Maggie right up until "Feeding Frenzy." Which begs the question of why they'd change actresses in the middle of the final series.

@SSJSupreme One of the reasons I am, is because those original VA choices weren't very good. Why do you think they were recast?
PurpleWarrior13
said at 3:13 AM on Sun Jul 22 2012
@KaiserNeko The only recasts that had anything to do with creative changes were Frieza, and a few of Sabat's roles for obvious reasons. All the other recasts happened because the actors were simply unavailable or weren't committed to voice acting at that time (Meredith McCoy, Stephanie Nadolny, Chris Forbis, Tiffany Vollmer, Brad Jackson, Monika Antonelli, etc). Dameon Clarke wasn't originally set to return either, but Okatron 5000 DID make an effort to get him and McCoy back, according to Chris Sabat, but were only successful with Clarke. Mike McFarland and Colleen Clinkenbeard confirmed Stephanie's absence (for being involved with "other things"), Antonelli lives in Mankatto, Jackson lives in Nebraska, and Vollmer moved to New Orleans around the same time voice production started.
Nightmare Crusher
said at 7:22 PM on Thu Aug 2 2012
@PurpleWarrior13 Wasn't Frieza recast because Linda Young was having a hard time doing the voice, not creative changes?
NCZ (Admin)
said at 7:37 PM on Thu Aug 2 2012
@Nightmare Crusher A bit of both, actually. Linda was initially rehired but wasn't able to keep up with the mouth movements, so they used that as the opportunity to finally use a male actor like they've been wanting to.
PurpleWarrior13
said at 10:05 PM on Fri Aug 3 2012
@Nightmare Crusher Technically. Linda is much older now than she was when she last did the voice, and could simply no longer perform the character, an understandable recast, but apparently Linda was pretty upset by the change. Though even though they cast a male actor to perform the role, he still ended up sounding quite a bit like Young. I still think of them as the same character (though I've always thought of the character as being asexual, and I honestly think the Kai performance reflects that even more than Linda's).

I guess I should've mentioned that Monika Antonelli (Puar, Chiaotzu, etc) was actually recast quite a while BEFORE Kai was even a thought, since Brina Palencia took over the roles in 2008, right after FUNi finished work for the first two sagas of DBZ.
Fulgore2005

@NCZ I've heard another reason was because they didn't want to use equipment to enhance the voice. Which meant less money would be needed.
PurpleWarrior13
said at 11:38 PM on Wed Sep 19 2012
@Fulgore2005 Ironically they did use some equipment to enhance Chris Ayres' voice (mostly for Frieza's 2nd form), but definitely less of it.

Actually the sound effect used for Frieza's 3rd form from DBZ was really awesome sounding, very alien-like, and horrifying. It's a shame it was removed for later DVD releases.
Fulgore2005

Monica Rial is as boisterous and bossy-sounding as any of the other voices, but she adds a humanity, an intelligence and heart to the role, and is a great actress whose skills reflect in the delivery. She's the best English voice for Bulma, almost as good as Hiromi Tsuru herself.

@penguintruth I think you're over-exaggerating how good Rial is. She's too annoying and egotistical to be as good as Hiromi Tsuru. Hiromi does have those qualities, but not too the extent of Monica Rial. Also Tsuru is a LOT nicer sounding. Rial is barely above Vollmer, let alone close to Tsuru.
