Robin / Dick Grayson

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Robin / Dick Grayson with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Batman

Robin, nicknamed "The Boy Wonder" is the partner/side-kick of Batman. Dick Grayson is the original Robin, with others succeeding him (Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Damian Wayne) after he became Nightwing. Before he became Robin, Dick was an acrobatic and part of a circus act called "The Flying Graysons" alongside his parents. When a mafia failed to exort the circus owner, he sabotaged the trapeze ropes, resulting in he death of DIck's parents.
Having lost his own parents to criminals, Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) took Dick under his wing where he eventually became Robin.

Batman teaches Robin necessary skills to be a crime fighter such as several martial arts, stealth, forensics and escapology. Like Batman, Robin has no super powers but makes up for it by reaching the maximum limits of human potential through intensive training. His agility and acrobatic skills are rivaled by few.

Jesse McCartney gets my vote. Lester is great, but he works better as an older Dick Grayson (like college age to Nightwing). Menville is great too and he works for that version in TT, but its very different from how Dick Grayson is in the comics.

McCartney gets that youthful energy that I think Dick Grayson should have when he's Robin.

Choosing between Scott Menville and Jesse Mccartney is so tough, because they both do an excellent take on Dick Grayson. Dick's leadership, courage, and intelligence come through perfectly.

That being said, I do think Jesse edges out because I think he embodies Dick a bit better, at least as Robin. Dick was the Robin that everyone is friends with and looks up to. Jesse has a sort of playful and likeable aspect to his voice that comes through in his portrayal that leans toward him being my favorite. Amazing casting choice.

Is it just me, or does anyone think Johnny Young Bosch could be the perfect Nightwing voice? I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet.

VC thoughts update

I really liked Ronald Liss' take on the Superman radio show the most. I really think he fits the original Bob Kane design perfectly, and he sounds pretty youthful and energetic.

Out of the guys in this particular VC, I prefer Burt Ward the most. I really felt he was pretty youthful, energetic and he also had great comedic timing. What's even better is that even in Return of the Caped Crusaders, his voice still sounds like it did in the 60's and 70's.

Next is Loren Lester. He also has a great amount of energy and a great sense of humor, and he also adds a lot of emotional depth into the role.

Next one is Casey Kasem. He has played the role the most and he really did a good job at it. He had great chemistry with both Adam West and Olan Soule and he had the same charm as Ward. Also, his performance in the Super Powers Team episode The Fear made me think that Casey could have been a pretty good Nightwing.

Michael Cera's take is really different, but also really refreshing and enjoyable. I really liked his energy and enthusiasm, and he really makes Robin quite likeable and endearing.

I also enjoyed Brianne Siddall, Scott Menville (more for his performance in Teen Titans Go! 'cause I found his 2003 take just too brooding), Jason Marsden, Grey DeLisle, Crawford Wilson, Jeremy Shada, Jesse McCartney, Josh Keaton and Johnny Yong Bosch in the role.

Evan Sabara and Shane Haboucha don't leave a big impression on me.

@Starscreamsfan You seem to have great knowledge of these radio show voices from what I've seen to where you reference them in practically every voice compare.
said at 11:54 AM on Sat Jul 15 2017
@Shaun Ince Yeah. I've always felt radio is an underrated medium. I've heard a lot of radio shows (both old and new) and a lot of them are excellently performed and allow you to use your imagination.

The Superman radio show in particular is one of my favorites. There were some story arcs that weren't really that engaging at times, but some others (like the Atom Man saga and some of the crossovers with Batman) that really were masterful with both the action and the suspense. But even in the weakest arcs, the VAs always delivered 110% in their performance.

"There is good and there is evil, but the line between can be almost impossible to find. Does one good deed make him a hero? Am I to blame for all of it because of a single mistake? In the end, all I really know is that the answers don't come easy. It's supposed to be simple, but it's not."

No reason for me ramble; Here are my Top 5 Favourite Dick Grayson, Age Twelve Voices:

5. Brianne Siddall/ Burt Ward
4. Evan Sabara
3. Loren Lester
2. Jesse McCartney
1. Scott Menville

Future VA Suggestions:

Jamie McGonnigal would be my first choice for a new Dick Grayson voice, since his Johnny Garland voice would be a natural fit for Robin.

With regards to child Actors, I think Art Parkinson would work well in the role, bringing out both the Comedic and Dramatic aspect of the Character.

I also recommend Atticus Shaffer, Taylor Gray, David A Kaye and Mitchel Musso.

Iirc they deliberately wrote Teen Titans Robin so that it was ambiguous as to which Robin he was. They wanted him to be just Robin. They implied it was Dick but made a point to never directly state it.

Top 5:

1. Scott Menville
2. Jesse McCartney
3. Loren Lester
4. Johnny Yong Bosch
5. Josh Keaton

Thoughts on the rest:

Casey Kasem - Pretty good, but can come across as Shaggy doing an impression of Robin, or at least trying to sound heroic.

Burt Ward - Classic Boy Wonder, but sometimes feels a bit lacking.

Brianne Siddall - The dialogue is horrendous, but it fits 50s Robin to a tee.

Evan Sabara - Pretty good.

Grey DeLisle - Not bad for an anime version, even allowing that this is a spoof of said genre.

Jason Marsden - Great for Scooby-Doo Robin, but still fairly recognisable.

Jeremy Shada - Decent, but a bit light.

Crawford Wilson - Not bad, but plays up the angst angle a tad too much.

Shane Haboucha - OK, but his acting could be better.

I think Scott Menville's Robin got hit the most with (IMO) bad writing in Teen Titans: Go!

The direction and material makes him sound really high-strung and hyperactive, to the point where Robin seems like a caricature of a no-nonsense leader. Not bad, I just prefer the more subtle take in Teen Titans.

He's still my favorite, though, just moreso for his original performance and I'm not blaming Scott for the difference in performance.

Scott Menville works best for the younger Robin, and Loren Lester works best for the older Robin.

Jesse McCartney, Josh Keaton, and JYB are also all pretty good as Robin. Nothing's bad about most of these performances, though, although Grey DeLisle and Brianne Siddall are a bit too effeminate to me in the part.

I actually like Jesse McCartney the most here. Yeah, the idea of Roxas voicing Robin might raise some eyebrows but man he was really exceptionally good here. It's youthful, cheerful and can pull off the more subtle moments pretty well too. A standout performance from said show.

I used to like Scott Menville back in the day but I feel he's way too brooding as Robin. His performance in Teen Titans is good, but it sounds more like Jason Todd than Dick Grayson. I might get flack for this, but I think Menville sounds better in Teen Titans Go than the original Teen Titans.

Loren Lester is great as an older Robin but it puts him at a disadvantage considering most of the others are more age appropiate compared to the Robin for Batman TAS.

JYB was one of my personal choices to voice Robin. No complaints here. Playing teenage heroes is his specialty and this is no exception.

Onto the Brave & the Bold voices. All of them are pretty good. Jeremy Shada is my personal favorite out of all of them. Grey sounds a bit too feminine, Crawford Wilson sounds a bit bland. Jason Marsden is voicing a Scooby Doo variant. It works for that episode but as a Robin voice, I don't think it works.

Evan Sabara & Shane Haboucha are OK. Josh Keaton while sounding similar to his Spiderman, fits a tad better than Loren Lester in the role. Burt Ward & Casey Casem are pretty hilarious in a good way. They're way more campy, but fit the respective shows that they come from.

I dunno what it is about Brianne Siddal's performance but something about it doesn't sit right with me.

HOLY __________ BATMAN!

Ah yes the boy wonder, the sidekick to Batman. I actually like Robin when he's written well. He can be annoying but I blame it on the writing when it happens.

My favourite one here is Scott Menville from Teen Titans. He sounds young but also mature at the same time which is how I feel Robin should sound. He displayed a lot of emotions and range in the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon. In Teen Titans Go....ehhh I guess he's fine? Still cool he does continue to voice him to this day.

For an older more grown up Dick Grayson I think Loren Lester is really good, he has some really funny deliveries and does sound cool.

Burt Ward was great in the 60's Batman show and does translate well as a voice actor too.

Josh Keaton, Johnny Yong Bosch, Jason Marsden and Jesse McCartney are also all good

Casey Kasem sort of pushes since he does sound maybe the oldest one here but I still dug it.

It was interesting to cast some female VA's as Robin, Grey Delisle and Brianne Siddall are at least effective in the role.

I don't really care about the rest.

BONUS: As I've said before in the Nightwing compare, Andrew Francis would be an awesome choice for Robin, I could see him do a performance similar to his Megaman.EXE or Judau Ashta.

Johnny Yong Bosch? That's unexpected, yet I like it.

This is proof he can be just as good, even better in Western Animation as with Anime dubs. And the fact he got to share the recording booth with Bryton James, Rachel MacFarlane, and Dana Snyder is really saying something.
said at 6:13 AM on Tue Sep 8 2015
@Troodon2 No, not at all. His best roles are still exclusively to be found in JP video games and anime. It's not the format, it's the acting. Nothing Tara Strong can do is comparable to JYB's Lelouch or to compare a female, Karen Strassman's Kallen. Why? Because the acting is far more raw in Geass than My Little ****ing Pony.
said at 3:46 PM on Tue Sep 8 2015
@AntiSabat666 I think we had this argument before. But in this case--

1. It's somewhat unfair to compare something kiddy like MLP to Code Geass.

2. I understand it's the acting that matters and not the format, I'm just saying that Johnny can pull off just as good a performance in pre-lay work.
said at 3:54 PM on Tue Sep 8 2015
@AntiSabat666 I find that a bit unfair. Tara's had the opportunity to do raw roles too. Raven from Teen Titans is probably the premier example of that. And considering Tara Strong wasn't even mentioned in the original post, I find it a little strange to call her out at all.
said at 4:01 PM on Tue Sep 8 2015
@Bookman230 Yeah, it's the whole Anime vs American Animation argument people keep coming back to: That anime is more "Adult" where as american cartoons are "Kiddy". When really that's not so much the case.
Shaun Ince
said at 5:58 PM on Tue Sep 8 2015
@Troodon2 BioZero has that mentality. He thinks because certain anime is more serious compared to cartoons, it's always going to be better. I agree that it is a bit unfair to compare something more serious with something that isn't as serious when you compare acting. Granted he said this months ago on Twitter on a offhand conversation one day, so I don't know if he still shares the same feelings. I'll have to ask him.
said at 4:42 AM on Wed Sep 9 2015
@Shaun Ince My views have changed a bit. I respect a fee cartoon VA's, like Peter Cullen and the like. Still, I find anime, amd it's over the top screaming and emotion to be much more cathartic and satisfying to listen to.

@Bookman230 Although, to be fair, I wouldn't necessarily call American animation "subtle" as well. Most VAs that I've heard speak on the subject will generally find working on anime to be more like natural acting when compared to (the majority of) American animation.

Sure, it's not really serious in the way of live-action, but voice-over is a process that sort of *requires* a bit of exaggeration to get the point across with only the voice. & overall, animation doesn't quite lend itself to photorealism, & definitely benefits from a bit of colorful vibrance.

Mostly everyone here does a wonderful job as the boy wonder, but Loren, Scott, and Jesse all stand out most to me. It's kinda difficult to pick a fave between the three, because they all capture the character's idealistic and headstrong persona, with strong leadership capabilities that foreshadow him becoming his own superhero.

I want to like Josh, but he doesn't get too many lines, and I honestly see him as a better fit for the Tim Drake Robin/Red Robin character.

1. Jesse McCartney- Nailed the character's carefree-personality. 9.2/10
2. Loren Lester- The best voice for an older Robin. 9.2/10
3. Even Sabra- A bit forced in the clip, but from what I heard in the series itself he really did well in the role.
4.Shane Haboucha- Didn't have much to do, but from what I heard he fit the role well.
5. Jeremy Shada- Like Shane, he did a good job with what he was given.
6. Josh Keaton- I know he hasn't been added yet, but I'll write this early. He did a really good job, even if he was just using his Spider-man voice. Still, he's a good example of the voice acting in the game.
7. Scott Menville- The voice itself fits the character perfectly, and he may have been my number 1 or 2, except that Robin's personality which Menville gave him in that series wasn't anything like Dick's, who is more carefree and laid-back, and Teen Titans Robin is anything but those two things.
said at 8:53 AM on Thu Jan 23 2014
Unlike a lot of teenage boys who are voiced by females that fit them well, it just doesn't seem to work here in my opinion. Grey sounds too girlish for Robin's voice while Brianne just sounds boring & bland. Hopefully one day, Robin will be voiced by a woman who could Nail it.

It's hard to pick a good Robin but in the end I'm going with Charlie since he sounds more natural in the role in my opinion.

hey a thought accord.... as much as i love Scott menville ((and trust me he is like 3rd place for me)) i just realized..... he acted WAY to serious in teen titans.. there is nothing wrong with that mind you.. but dick greyson was more known for being the witty robin

My vote goes to Scott Menville, he sounds like the young confident super hero robin should be. I don't really like Jesse McCartney's Robin at all and Loren sounds rather flat.

@LordofEvil96 I don't mind either Jesse McCartney of Loren Lester that much, but I certainly agree with you on Scott Menville.

Wish they got Casey Kasem or Burt Ward for the The New Batman Adventures episode "Legends of the Dark Knight. Brianne got the job dine but isn't my favorite voice for campy Robin. Also she's the only female to voice Dick making it a bit of a strange casting even though people familiar with her work know she can do young boy voices quite well.

Scott Menville is my favorite. He made Dick sound dedicated, and a serious leader, but he still had some of those childish traits we think of when we think of Batman's sidekick.

I haven't seen Young Justice, but aside from the lisp I like Jesse McCartney's clip. He'll by my second place.

Loren Lester is my third. He has a good voice, but some of his acting was a little too wooden and awkward. I wouldn't mind hearing him reprise the role sometime.

Overall, I think Scott Menville turned in a great rendition of Dick Grayson and I would love to hear his Robin in different things.

Loren Lester - Good, But I felt a lot of BTAS voice acting fell flat.
Scott Menville - Was perfect for that show, probably wouldnt be so perfect in another version. Still love him, though.
Evan Sabera - A little to nasally.
Jeremy Shada - He did this before he got famous for Adventure Time. He did just fine.
Crawford Wilson - Wow, he really does sound like an older Jeremy.
Jesse McCartney - When I heard he was cast as Robin, I died a little inside. But now, I love it. I've completely forgot he did the voice.
Charlie Schlatter - Pretty good, actually.

Jesse McCartney is hands down my favorite voice actor for Robin. He did such a fantastic job in regards to bringing out the humour, wit, and as previously mentioned, a stroke of snarkyness within the character, amidst the lisp, which in my personal opinion actually added more persona to the young Robin.

Although, I must say Loren Lester came at a very close second, and that he too, portrayed Robin greatly.

I'm still sticking to my vote to Scott Menville. It's a different Dick Grayson. He's a lot less childish. But, I like the voice for the character and he's done a fantastic job.

Jesse McCartney eventually grew on me. I didn't like that he put a lisp at first. But, it stopped bugging me later on. He did a pretty good job.

Definitely Scott Menville, but Loren Lester was good too.

I tried to elaborate more with a best-worst list of favorites, but they all sound so similar, it's just not possible. Of the modern voices, Scott Menville does sound the most interesting, while capturing the tough and comedic sides of the character. Loren Lester also sounded good, but a little older than I'd like. Jason Marsden was also surprisingly good.

Even both women sound similar to each other. Between them, I prefer Brianne just slightly for sounding more like a loyal sidekick. Grey was a tad exaggerated for my tastes.

Casey Kasem and Burt Ward also sound similar, but you can still tell them apart. Burt Ward IS Robin in my eyes all around, but he wasn't terribly memorable as the voice, especially not compared to the original movie/TV series (though I would've still cast him as the retro Robin in Brave & the Bold). Casey Kasem sounds like Casey Kasem, but it's good casting and worked quite well.

Dick Grayson, the first and some might say greatest Robin:

Loren Lester - He works because this Dick is a lot older than most so he nails it.

Scott Menville - I really enjoyed his unique take on Robin, once again showing how great a voice cast TT had.

Evan Sabara - I've said it before and I'll say it again; I love The Batman. And Evan delivers a great performance as the young Dick shown in the series.

Casey Kasem - The first Robin voice, he may be the best voice from that series, or atleast my favourite.

Burt Ward - He has a good voice for the role, and although I slightly prefer Kasem, Ward is also very enjoyable, albeit highly cheesy.

Shane Haboucha - Excellent casting. I loved it, just like every voice in that movie.

Jeremy Shada - One of the better Brave and the Bold voices. He can really sound like Scott Menville at times, which I like.

Crawford Wilson - He reminds a bit of Loren Lester, and they both go for the same aged Dick Grayson. The only problem that
I have is that he sounds very little like an older version of Shada.

Jesse McCartney - This is a fine example of questionable but perfect casting. He fits into the role very naturally. Love

Jason Marsden - Great impression of Burt Ward.

Grey DeLisle - Although I liked it, I'm glad it was a small role because it can really sound like Velma.

My favourite is Jesse McCartney, followed in a close second by Scott, then Evan, Loren, Jeremy Shada, Shane, Casey, Crawford,
Burt Ward, Jason Marsden, and then Grey.

Scott Menville was actually the first Robin I've heard, and I really LOVED Teen Titans, so there's a lot of bias I have on this one. Still, I really liked him as Robin, mostly for the youthfulness and energy he brought to the character, and had very good chemistry with the rest of the cast (particularly Hynden Walch as Starfire). Surprisingly, Scott's Robin isn't too far from his natural voice.

But at the same time, Young Justice also has great voice acting, with Jesse McCartney's Robin being a prime example. His voice is more distinctive compared to the others, and really played on his snarky attitude and no-nonsense persona. I also have to say, YJ is one of the VERY few animated productions that actually uses celebrity voice-over talent remarkably well; mind you, this is coming from someone who normally strongly opposes that practice (just watch the CGI Smurfs movie from last year...)!

In the end, Scott Menville and Jesse McCartney are my favorites.

@Bombermanp naw it's tim, tim swore red and green from his first appearance until superboy died in which he changed hos colors to match conner's. Tim is also the only robin in the comics to wear the outfit in the picture here, it was then used for all other robins in animation starting in 1992.

I think it largely depends on which Robin we're talking about. For Dick Grayson, I'd go for Loren Lester. For Tim Drake, Mathew Valencia. Can't say I've been taken with the few Jason Todd voices there have been. Really enjoyed Jensen Ackle's Red Hood voice from Under The Red Hood but the younger Jason voices were quite forgettable.

Similar to Nightwing, Loren Lester as Dick as Robin is okay, but not my fav. And since not all of these are Dick as Robin, I'm gonna go on a case by case basis.

Dick Grayson: Like I said, Loren is okay, but not my favorite. I'm going to say Jesse McCartney is my favorite as Dick as Robin and I think he fits Dick as Robin. Evan Sabara was pretty good as a just starting out as Robin Dick Grayson. Scott Menville, Jeremy Shada, and Crawford Wilson are good, too.

Jason Todd: Not really a wolud lot to compare here, only a young kid and teen version, but both Alexander and Vincent Martella did a good job as Jason as Robin.

Tim Drake: I guess Eli Marienthal for him. As the clip of Static Shock, his Robin does have a little more of Tim from the comics, though in thr Mystery of the Batwoman DTDVD he did act more like DCUA Tim did. That said, Shane Sweet and Mathew Valencia are good, too, but overall DCAU Tim was a combo of Tim and Jason. I normally like Wil Wheaton's work, but his Tim sounds a little older than he should. From what I've seen of Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu, Meville was good as Tim as Robin. I hope Tim talks in Arkham City and if so, they get a good voice actor for him.

Damian Wayne: Agian, not really anything to compare here. Patrick Cavanaugh was all right for how the show did him, but that wasn't the Damian of the comics; even barring the change of who his mother was, he has a different personality from the comics' Damian.
said at 12:18 PM on Thu Mar 22 2012
@Anicomicgeek Since Tim is a my favorite Robin and I liked Tory Baker's performance as him, I'm giving it to Troy Baker here. It worked for how Tim was in the could and could work for Tim in the comics.

I'll probably get blasted for this, but...

Loren Lester's Robin annoys the hell out of me. Especially since he's practically an adult and sounds annoying. Matthew Valencia isn't as annoying, but he's meant to be a kid, so I'll cut him some slack.

Scott Menville is #1 for me, with Evan Sabara, a kid Robin whose voice didn't annoy the hell out of me, in second place.
said at 4:11 PM on Sat Aug 6 2011

well here is the problem with this voice compare. most of this robins are not even the same robins. there are atleast 4 differnt people who became robin

Dick Grayson ((loren, scott, crawford, even, i possibly jesse and anyone who plaid the super old version))
Jason Todd ((the Martella bros))
& Tim Drake ((Wheaton, possibly jessie, Mathew shane and eli))
are the most famous
Damian Wayne has only been voiced by patrick
i never saw dark tomorrow is i dont know which Jonathan Roumie voiced i assume its Grayson.

dont feel blasted by us.. you just need to realize not all Robins are the same character. the reason why loren sounds like a adult is because in that batman series Dick grayson is a teenager soon to develope into a adult. ((aka going solo and becoming nightwing)) scott is kinda the same thing but in teen titans robin left earlier before switching to the good ol black and blue. and in the batman he gose threw the whole process of growing up.

as with tim he has only been portrayed as a kid becoming a teenager.

and jason starts as a kid, dies as a teenager then is resurrected, time skiped and he became a adult ((spoiler alert he is the new red hood and was possibly RedX))

idk about Damian. all i know is that he is the biological son of bruce

I also like Scott Menville's quite alot too. What I don't understand is how Jesse McCartney's is so high on the poll. His acting's not all that great, and he has a bit of lisp which is kind of distracting. He's easily the worst in my opinion.

@thegreatd I kind of agree that Jesse's lisp is a little distracting at times, but he does bring a different side of Robin we've never seen. Smart, serious and fun. I also think he's high on the poll mainly because Young Justice is the most recent show that Robin's been on so people mainly remember his version of it.
