It could be said that Baki was born to be the best. Yujiro Hanma, the strongest man in the world, fathered him for the sole purpose of having a worthy opponent. Unfortunately for Baki this meant his childhood was not exactly loving. He spent the majority of his life training, often putting himself at risk of death, just to have a chance of matching his father's overwhelming strength.

While Baki's aptitude for battle is perhaps only surpassed by his father, the two are opposites as people. While Yujiro disregards everyone around him, Baki seems to draw other people in like a magnet. Yujiro believes himself to be invincible, while Baki sometimes lets his emotions get the best of him.

For the dub of the Baki OVA James Carter Cathcart played Baki. For Funimation's dubs of the two Baki TV series Robert McCollum took the role. When animated Baki returned to Netflix the entire cast was replaced and Troy Baker became his new voice.

EDITOR'S OPINION

The OVA was only really a small slice of Baki without a lot of dramatic meat, putting James Carter Cathcart at a severe disadvantage from the start. Couple that with some not so good voice direction and it's difficult to even take him seriously.

Robert McCollum had the most time as Baki. While those dubs were not the most consistent when it came to quality Robert was never anything short of competent. His voice never felt out of place as Baki matured over the course of the series. I suppose my only issue is that he never really went above and beyond either. There isn't anything particularly special about Robert McCollum's Baki that really wowed me.

Troy Baker has that though. He's more than able to play up Baki's confidence and swagger in combat with ease. Yet where he truly shines is in the stuff between the fighting. Troy Baker gives Baki an emotional vulnerability that really humanizes Baki and reminds the listener that at the end of the day he's still just a teenager who has been thrown into crazy and dangerous situations whether he likes it or not.

As far as I'm concerned Troy Baker takes home the prize as the best voice for Baki.
