Really good game with some top notch voice acting from a great cast

This is a really tragic story all things considered...and the dub cast nailed every moment. Seriously how does a lighthearted road trip end with the mass slaughter of an entire nation?

Definitely one of my favorite voice casts and the voice acting is just brilliant.

Lots of fresh and familiar faces in the cast, both Ray Chase and Robbie Daymond's careers truly kicked off with this game and for good reason since they're both terrific as Noctis and Prompto. Adam Croasdell was fun as Ignis and Chris Parson was also good as Gladiolus.

Matthew Mercer as Cor, Kari Wahlgren as Aranea and Josh Keaton as the teen version of Talcott is a nice change from seeing someone like Troy Baker or Laura Bailey being in the game again.

But it doesn't stop there, there's some very surprising names here too.

It was nice to see Jack Angel here as Cid and it's great that he's still doing voicework aside from doing Additional stuff for animated films. Bob Joles (one of my favorite voice actors) played Iedolas and he was superb in the role. Trevor Devall as Ravus was a nice change from his usual roles and Darin De Paul was great as Ardyn.

A wonderful dub all round. Top marks to voice director Keythe Farley.

The voice work in FFXV is definitely top quality.

On a side note, did Tasia voice for any of the DLCs?

For all you Ignis fangirls out there...

SPOILERS... Ignis can sing...

Doesn't Noctis look a lot like Sasuke Uchiha from the Naruto franchise?
said at 6:56 PM on Wed Feb 1 2017
@Kee Nar Luk Ham
I don't think so. Sasuke sounds cooler in my opinion though the acting is compromised.

As for Noctis, Wow. The acting is just amazing. So much so that it has become my standard for what really good acting in Anime should be.

Game is a great game overall, gameplay, voice acting, etc... just one major plot hole of the story which may be why ratings arent as high as games like witcher or skyrim that pissed me off so far but other than that great game.

Based on what I've heard I think Croasdell sounds the best of the main party, he brings a really nice air of wisdom and aloofness to the character.

said at 3:24 PM on Tue Nov 29 2016
@NCZ Goddamn it, hit Post Comment before I wrote anything.

Yeah, I mean, 8-9 on average is nothing to scoff at. I was just looking at the overall criticism to the game, and it's for fairly important stuff, like saying "Battling is flashy but not very varied" or "The story is incomprehensible" or "The last third isn't that fun." I find those critiques fairly major, which is why I said "isn't stellar."

Should've been more clear about that though; I certainly did not mean it like Star Ocean V or something.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 11:29 PM on Wed Nov 30 2016

Yeah don't worry about it. I get what you mean.

For me I think, what I take away from a lot of the reviews, and can add in with my own personal experience, I think it's fair to say this is a very sum-of-its-parts game. I don't think I'm anywhere near the point where I can do a fully fleshed out review or anything yet, but just for my impressions, I do think that it's a very well-rounded, polished game. There's so much to do, the graphics, music, and world are legitimately beautiful, and I like the characters more than I thought I would.

The story complaints is honestly about what I expected because the circumstances regarding this game are so unusual. It's basically trying to salvage as much of Versus as it can while also being coherent and working as a single, mainline FF game - and that's limited by the fact that Nomura himself admitted Versus was never fully mapped out and he was pretty much making stuff up as he went along.

For me I feel like the game this reminds me the most of is Xenoblade Chronicles X. There are definitely some sacrifices that have to be made here and there, but overall, the world is gorgeous and a genuine joy to explore, and the actual game part of things is really, really damn solid. At least in my opinion so far. I'm just so excited and happy to play it and it's honestly kind of surreal that it's finally here.
said at 8:57 AM on Fri Dec 2 2016
@NCZ I'm definitely gonna get it once I get a PS4, I'm still sure I'll enjoy it since I'm a JRPG freak. Plus, with The Last Guardian finally coming out next month, we have TWO pieces of well-known vaporware finally hitting consoles! That in itself is great.

How's the VO, based on what you played so far?
NCZ (Admin)
said at 9:11 AM on Fri Dec 2 2016

Yeah, in one week, it's crazy to think about!

The VO, so far, is pretty dang solid. I had concerns about some of them going in, but overall I actually like it all a fair bit. Bearing in mind that I've been really taking my time with the game and so far I've been more fooling around, exploring, and taking in the sights more than I have been advancing the storyline, so I haven't seen too much of the characters outside the main party though.

Overall though, the main thing I've noticed is that while I had concerns about some characters going in (mainly with regards to them potentially sounding too "cartoony" or otherwise-unnatural), now that I'm actually playing the game and letting everything sink in, everything all just sounds really nice. I told myself I'd be switching between the English, French, and Japanese tracks for fun, and the Japanese one is what I felt like I'd be used to thanks to Brotherhood and all the initial trailers, but I like the English track well enough that I haven't felt the need to switch yet. So that's a pretty good sign.

I think coming back to the whole point about cartoony-ness, it's probably Prompto whose voice is clearly the most "charactery", which I guess is understandable since of the main 4 he's the most anime-archetype one. I'm admittedly not familiar enough with Robbie Daymond's other work to know how close it is to his natural voice. Ardyn too but I guess his whole schtick seems to be that he's kind of haughty and a larger-than-life presence so I don't mind it there.
said at 9:20 AM on Fri Dec 2 2016
@NCZ God, finals have messed up my time sense, The Last Guardian is in one week, Jesus Christ. I'm still thinking it's November for some reason. I'm getting old.

Glad the VO is good though, I especially liked Adam Croasdell from what I saw in the trailer.

I finished the main story the other day. I have a lot of thoughts on it. If I have the time/energy/motivation I might write a review or something, so we shall see, but overall I really enjoy the game. Like I said before, the actual game part and the sense of discovery and adventure is really incredible.

I don't have any complaints at all about the VO. Aside from a couple of awkward lines (par for the course, really), everyone sounded great in their parts, many of the veteran VAs sounded distinct from what they usually do and appropriate to their characters, and the acting was really excellent. Two in particular just plain knocked it out of the park, no doubt about it. But yeah, there were a bunch that sounded great and I thought should have had more screentime which was kind of sad. Overall though, no problems at all.

The sad thing is that unless I missed it, the game didn't seem to have a formal voice director credit. :( Good thing Ray named Keythe Farley in that interview video. It'd be such a shame if he (and anyone else involved in casting/recording) really turned out to not get any official credit for their work.

@huzaifa_ahmed The one thing I adored about the game was the cast. Everyone gave it their all in their performances and I deeply cared about them, especially Noctis.

This is looking to be a really good, promising cast. It has fresh new blood, but that alone isn't what makes it interesting. In this cast is fresh new blood in the VO field that includes new, up and coming VAs who in recent years have steadily been rising in prominence and gaining recognition as of 2014/15 or so and have gone from relative nobodies to recognizable talents who are climbing in prominence. Ray Chase and Robbie Daymond to name a few have really made their breakthrough as of a few years ago, and it's great to see Square Enix is casting them in a big project like this into some major roles. I really oughtta start keeping an eye on those two from here on, there careers seem to be steadily rising. Darin De Paul also seems to be slowly rising in games recently and that's great too. Robbie and Ray have recently caught my eye as newcomers who have proven themselves quite talented and that's great to see.

It's great to see some fresh, new and upcoming VAs in this cast who are proving themselves to be very talented actors, and I'm looking forward to their performances in this game, which is looking to see some very strong voice acting from what performances we heard. After seeing so many of the same group of VAs like Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, and Yuri Lowenthal in so many games, it's really nice and refreshing to see some new talent rising up and getting their chance to shine in the spotlight, and I have confidence in these VAs that they'll give wonderful performances in this game, which is looking to be really good. These VAs, namely Robbie and Ray, are people I really oughtta be keeping an eye on in the future, and what future work they'll have.

Oh and Matthew Mercer is here too, which is awesome. He's an amazing VA and now he's come a long way from being "Troy Baker II", and it's really nice to see Matt getting more and more prominence as a high profile and talented VA. I guess being the "Troy Baker successor" has indirectly brought the man into the spotlight, and that's awesome, since Matt is an amazing man.

According to Ray Chase in this video, Keythe Farley is the English voice director.

The video is also pretty cool and has some interesting tidbits from the cast. Darin De Paul really seems to be enjoying himself and Ray Chase seems like he's probably constantly pinching himself. Since his work in Xenoblade X really caught my attention, I'm really happy and pleasantly surprised to see him getting a major role like this.

Robbie Daymond was a surprise. Though I did play the FFXV demo that came with Type-0 before playing Zestiria and watching Sailor Moon Crystal. Maybe if I had played it after I would've recognized him.

@Unknownsage13 He was the first voice that a lot of us recognized through YT videos.

Woulda been nice to get Yuri Lowenthal, seeing as Prompto's original VA is Simon from Gurren Lagann...but Robbie's great.

He sounds a lot like JAT from FFX, too.

...Beyond that, it's interesting to see that they got mostly live-actors whereas in the JP they got largely A-list VA's.

Looking forward to both, they sound great from the trailers. Hope the game sells gangbusters & gets gerat reviews.
said at 8:36 PM on Sun Aug 28 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed Yeah I just looked up the Japanese actors and I could just as easily picture:

Noctis-Johnny Yong Bosch (due to their shared role as Makoto in Free)

Ignis-J. Michael Tatum (due to their shared role as Rintaro in Steins;Gate, Gourmet in Tokyo Ghoul)

Gladiolus-Keith Silverstein (due to their shared role as Vector in Sonic)

Prompto-Todd Haberkorn (due to their shared role as Natsu in Fairy Tail)

It is interesting how they went with television actors and newer VAs.

said at 6:55 AM on Mon Aug 29 2016
If every casting director limited themselves to VAs who had dubbed someone else in the past, that'd be the quickest way to make anime/game dubs (which already have a problem with sounding samey) sound even samier.
said at 8:29 AM on Mon Aug 29 2016
@NCZ that's actually why I really like Fates's dub cast. So many of the characters (including the main ones like Corrin, Hinoka and Xander) don't have the "typical anime dub" voices that a lot of non-union dubs tend to do. And so, for example I hear Takumi's voice as TAKUMI's voice, and not just (insert overused VA here) as Takumi. If you get what I mean.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 4:55 PM on Mon Aug 29 2016
@HylianBelmont No kidding. Kris Zimmerman seriously rocked the casting in that game.

I was pretty impressed with Star Ocean 5 for another JRPG this year - while the game itself was so-so, the dub was actually really solid and on paper, boasted a cast that looks like they really did care about putting together a strong and varied list.

I wonder if that game's director(s) (Wes Gleason and Chris Faiella) are working on this. This definitely isn't a Fletcher cast. I hope it's not Robert Buccholz - nothing against him personally, but I've felt like his dubs were always the weakest link among the FF games.
said at 5:04 PM on Mon Aug 29 2016
@NCZ I don't mind Robert Buccholz's work on the Dissidia games and Kingdom Hearts honestly. But I am hoping that Jack does return for the FF7 remake though (not that I'd be able to play it or FF15 anytime soon but yeah)
said at 5:53 PM on Mon Aug 29 2016
@Unknownsage13 I think Keith might be rather soft for Gladiolus (Fred Tatasciore'd be better), & same for Todd as Prompto, but as NCZ said, if casting directors limited themselves to "reprising" dub VA's, it'd get samey REAL quickly.

Plus, dubs unfortunately don't have access to as many VA's as Japan does for their domestic made stuff.

But a lot of your castings are great.
said at 5:55 PM on Mon Aug 29 2016
@NCZ John DeMita is in this, he's usually in Fletcher dubs, & especially so, seeing as he's dubbing Banjo Ginga who is much deeper (that's not a diss, just that it may signal Jack's insistence on using John).

Also, one of his VA's in Kingslive is in SHadow of Mordor, & nothing else.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 5:59 PM on Mon Aug 29 2016

Oh for sure, that game neeeeds Fletcher. And no need to worry, with that game, late 2017 feels almost like it'll be too early :V

Dissidia 012's dub was good. Though granted it's kind of a hard thing to mess up, it's probably Buccholz's best FF work. Crisis Core was fine but a few parts seemed a bit awkward, overall a decent effort from him though.

@huzaifa_ahmed Thing is DeMita has also been popping up in stuff for Bang Zoom lately. Kingsglaive's misc voices were cast by them, so it's more likely that DeMita's involvement was a product of that.
said at 8:33 PM on Mon Aug 29 2016
@NCZ I was in a hurry when I wrote that, but "Adam Croasdell" only has Shadow of Mordor in his VO credits.

Yeah, SoM was co-directed by Liam, JB, & Sam, I think, & I wouldn't put it past them to be involved with this dub...but since Fletcher has a 15-year relationship with Square, I'm hopeful that Croasdell being involved is a sign of Fletcher's involvement.

It may be possible that he *is* involved, albeit to a much lesser extent as, as you've noted, the delivery is kinda silly-sounding, while (as *I've* noted) the castings are pretty similar to the Japanese (I think that it likely owes a lot to the involvement of the original production staff), characteristic of previous Fletcher dubs (& again, it is something I appreciate).

I hope that they can somehow redub this in a less cheesy fashion, to the point & hopefully easily enough now that the development is largely over.

Final Fantasy's English dubs are really important, to say the least of that. They do set a certain flavor to it, especially seeing that FF's audience is WAY bigger than typical anime & anime-style games. & if they screw up, I don't think the games'll be received as well.

As for Buchholz's dubs, it's been ages since I played (half of) CC, replaying it subbed slowly, I'll make comparisons eventually.

& honestly, with Kingdom Hearts dubs...when you've got Corey Burton, JAT, Tara Strong, Tress MacNeille, essentially the orgasmic fantasy of any & all dub fanatics, plus the likes of Hamill & Christopher Lee/Leonard Nimoy (both RIP)...

...what does it even matter who the dub director is? I'm *pretty* sure these guys could handle it practically alone. Correct me if I'm wrong..

(I've only played FF3 DS, FF13 dub/sub, FF7, CC, & KH1, out of the games I mentioned in this thread, btw..)
said at 1:13 PM on Tue Aug 30 2016
@NCZ Maybe the delay was to get a hopefully more subtle redub? I hope it's possible.

@huzaifa_ahmed I believe it was for other reasons. But I can't quite remember what they were however.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 1:41 PM on Tue Aug 30 2016
@HylianBelmont It was because the game itself is (theoretically) done. The original plan was to release the game as it is now on September 30th, but release a day one patch for additional polish.

But because the contents of the day-1 patch would have ended up being substantial, as well as inconvenient for players with low-quality (or no) internet access, in order to ensure everyone could have an experience as polished as possible they delayed the game by two months so that the content of the day-1 patch can be included on the disc upon manufacturing, along with other tweaks and improvements.

There's no chance they're redoing every single line of dialogue in the game in two months. That would be a massive financial and resourceful investment, and a logistical nightmare all around. Totally unprecedented in the game industry. What we're hearing is what we're getting.

It's most likely not any of them, but the dub-over for Noctis sounds a lot like Tory Baker, Matt Mcree, Robin Atmin Downey, Christopher Corey Smith, & the like.

Haven't heard of his Japanese actor, but for Ignis & Prompto, we'll likely have an actor similar to Yuri Lowenthal or the like, seeing as they are voiced by Simón & various tenor characters in the original recording.

No idea who's dubbing Gladiolus, but he sounds like a great counterpart to Kenta Miyake (I actually think they both sound a lot like Fred Tatasciore, actually).

For Hiroki Tochi's characters, I feel it would be a hilarious casting gag if they dubbed him over with Nolan North, seeing as they both voice Desmond Miles & Nathan Drake.

Square Enix has done this with Richard Epcar & Akio Ōtsuka, & Christopher Sabat over Kenji Utsumi (kinda questionable IMO, seeing that Utsumi had a booming KMR sort of voice, while Sabat had a cool, gruff voice), both under the direction of Bob Buchholz.

As for Regis...I never dreamed we'd get GoT actors in a foreign-dub, & how well a dub-over Mr. Bean would be for Tsutomi Isobe.

Shozo Iizuka as I said below, I'm eager to see who they dub him over with, seeing how long he's been out of the game (RIP Nappa)

As for Ardyn (Keiji Fujiwara), I'm honestly confused, seeing that Fujiwara has been in almost everything from Japan, *including* previous FF games. Square Enix generally frowns upon reusing actors, wishing to keep each game separate from the others.

Now, Ardyn looks like a character much more gruff & tough than someone like Quinton Flynn (who's dubbed him under SquEnix before) could handle, & in general KG Fu G has a much deeper & rougher voice than Flynn...I'm not sure who exactly I'd imagine for this, but if they're going to go with "previously used VA's" & sound-alikes as they generally aim for in the FF dubs...I'd imagine John DiMaggio would be good.

Never heard of Luna's VA, so I'll hold off judgement, but I'd assume it's a soprano.

@MHUltimate2013DW In the movie.

@NCZ Are expecting Regis and Luna to have different voices when they appear in the games?
NCZ (Admin)
said at 5:07 PM on Tue Apr 5 2016
@Unknownsage13 That was confirmed that the movie voices are just for the movie. Even on-stage at the event, none of the actors said anything about the game. They were very specific about how they were working on the movie.
said at 8:38 PM on Tue Apr 5 2016
@NCZ That just seems kinda random (not saying your wrong, just saying I disagree with what they decided to do). Like I understand if they were movie only characters but Regis seems like he'll appear a few times and Luna seems like she'll have a significant role of sorts too.

Like if it's a budget issue then I don't even think they should've cast them in the movie.

I heard from the casting director that Noctis's voice will be different in the actual game than in the trailer and the demo, so any thoughts?
NCZ (Admin)
said at 2:52 PM on Wed Feb 24 2016
@MHUltimate2013DW Where'd you hear this? I know they said the stuff in the demo/trailers was recorded specifically for them and thus would probably be different in the finished game, but that specific tidbit is news to me.
said at 5:59 PM on Wed Feb 24 2016
@NCZ Well according to TV tropess it says that Hajime Tabata however stated in April 2015 that this was due to a short dubbing process, and by the time they realized it didn't work, the demo had to be shipped and so they just went with it. He also said that they've done several retakes and think they've found a satisfying voice that sounds younger. Due to fan reactions to Noctis's demo voice.

Weird we still don't know the english voices.

@12771a The English voice acting industry is far more secretive than the Japanese one for some reason.

It's official.

The exact date will be announced in March.

Seems like the game is set to launch sooner than later next year:

@DisneyAnimefan1995 I probably won't update the info till there's a completely, officially official announcement, but I believe it. I stand by this being a holiday 2016 release.

Also iterated today (can't remember if they said it already) that this game will have a simultaneous global launch. I think that's the first time for a main, offline RPG in the series.

Pleeeaaasee don't bring in the usual group of Yuri Lowenthal, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, etc. I'm so tired of hearing their voices. It's getting to the point where it's an immersion breaker for me.
said at 1:33 PM on Mon Jun 27 2016
@flips220 Is it the voice acting which is bad or just the fact that its usually them? Because those are some of the best voice actors in the world.
said at 10:44 AM on Sun Apr 5 2015
I really hope the final build is amazing, the English voice acting is good so far, I can barely tell any familiar voices.
said at 8:34 AM on Sat Apr 4 2015
Really liked it.
said at 9:56 PM on Fri Mar 20 2015
So far, the voice acting and the localization of the script just isn't doing anything for me. : / I hope it improves in the end product.

I definitely also heard Gideon Emery when Ignis talked in the English Trailer.

@Theroux I heard Yuri Lowenthal and Troy Baker. Sounded like Yosuke and Kanji from P4G, which I just got done playing again.
said at 4:37 AM on Mon Mar 2 2015
@Theroux Nah I don't think Yuri is in this, but you're probably right about Troy Baker since he takes everything he can get his hands on. Plus yeah Gideon is definitely in this
said at 4:39 AM on Mon Mar 2 2015
@Theroux wait I meant that for Bloodshed! Hehe oops XP
said at 3:55 PM on Thu Mar 5 2015
@Devengel Try listening at 1:50 on the voice over trailer. It sounds like him to me. If not, who do you thin kit sounds like? I know his voice from somewhere.
said at 12:29 AM on Sat Mar 21 2015
@Theroux @Bloodhsed113094 @Devengel
I don't think you guys will recognise anyone, take a look at the lead characters for past Final Fantasy games. Other than 1, maybe 2 main characters, no one is ever voiced by a recognisable professional VA. They're usually TV actors, musicians, newbies, etcetc.
said at 1:41 PM on Sat Mar 21 2015
@Stelman257 Actually 10 and 12 had many notable VAs. Most of 12's cast were trained stage actors (and British) so they were obviously talented lol.
said at 4:42 PM on Sat Mar 21 2015
@Bloodhsed113094 No no! I no what ya mean! Yuri is most definitely in this but I was just talking about that he doesn't voice any of the lead characters x3 For instance I believe Yuri does the gas station guy in the demo
said at 7:36 AM on Tue Apr 7 2015
@Theroux 10 and 12 have notable VA's now yes, but back when they were first done those VA's were still newbies and still starting out. They only became notable afterwards, and even then only a few of them.

And this has nothing to do with talent. Plenty of actors who haven't yet made a name for themselves are talented. What I'm saying is that I'm pretty darn sure no one is going to guess the main cast, simply because as SE always does, they're going to pull new actors, or TV actors for the roles, people you won't recognise.
said at 12:37 AM on Tue Aug 23 2016
@Theroux @Bloodhsed113094 @Devengel
And it was exactly as I said! Newer VA's were cast as the leads!
Almost completely unrecognizable, apart from Matthew Mercer of course.

I'm sorry but Prompto is just a really bad name choice.
said at 9:38 PM on Wed Dec 24 2014
@Regomania agreed.

said at 9:45 PM on Wed Dec 24 2014
@Regomania Still not as bad as "Edge Maverick" or "Kor Meteor".
said at 7:19 PM on Fri Dec 26 2014
@NCZ yeah but Edge and Kor actually sound interesting, Prompto sounds... Weird.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 9:07 PM on Sat Jan 10 2015
@Regomania Yeah, I mean, it is pretty unusual. After a point you kind of tune out all the weird names in JRPGs. "Prompto" is unusual, but it's pretty mild compared to the sort of names you'd find in a Tales* or Atelier or any of the more niche stuff. On the other hand, "Kor Meteor" and "Edge Maverick" sound ridiculous because they come off as trying too hard to sound cool.

(*It's mostly the Japan-only Tales games that have ridiculous character names. Tales of Innocence, for instance, has some that are pretty out there. The ones that are localized have generally been pretty inoffensive.)

I suppose in the end, the main takeaway is that "Prompto Argentum" not being one of the strangest names I've heard is a testament to the insanity of JRPG naming.

No matter how you look at it though, in the ludicrous name game, nobody holds a candle to "L'Arc Bright Lagoon".

@Nightmare Crusher Never mind, I found one. Sounds like there's some decent cast members here. I think I heard Sam Riegel, David Lodge, and Troy Baker in there.

@Nightmare Crusher I could have sworn I heard Gideon Emery in there.

@Katsu I'm not digging what I'm hearing so far. But, I'm positive that Noctis is Matthew Mercer.

I KNEW IT! I knew that Square was going to turn Versus XIII into FF XV! Sadly, I probably won't get a PS4 for quite some time since I'm not made of money, but it's looking fantastic.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 9:46 AM on Tue Jun 11 2013
@Nightmare Crusher Yeah, when they revealed that Versus had become XV, I actually shouted at my livestream out loud, "****IN' CALLED IT!"

Versus had such a huge amount of ambition and scope, spent so long in development, and since XIII has developed into something else entirely (don't want to confuse or alienate people with all the games with "Final Fantasy XIII" in the title), making it into an official part of the main series was a completely logical and applaudable move.
