I Heartily Recomend The German Dub of Escaflowne. While I do think that Bernd Vollbrecht's Floken voice sounds a Little too Light IMO, The Rest of The Dub's Cast are Excellent Fits in their Roles and the Voice Direction is Very Well Done.

At the Very Least Watch it for Claudia Urbschat Mingues' Delciously Depraved Dilandau Voice.

It's a shame that Ocean wasn't given the chance to redub Escaflowne. I know that the dub wasn't very good, but I know that they could do much better nowadays.

Sometimes I think Ocean is underestimated for their talents.

@8000 Saiyans It's honestly safe to say that Crunchyroll, Funimation and NYAV post view the Ocean talent pool the same way the countries in Hetalia view Canada.

@Soul-dragon Crunchyroll gave Gintama and Kiznaiver to Ocean. And I gotta say that they did wisely in giving Gintama to them.

I've heard good things about Kiznaiver's dub. Guess that showed detractors that Blue Water definitely has a lot of talent.

@8000 Saiyans I guess that is true...and I’ll definitely see for my myself once I finish Danmachi ha ha. I hope they’ll give Konosuba and Uma Musume Pretty Derby to them as well TBH (since Pretty Derby is the one show that I feel HAS to go to Ocean. No other talent pool would work as well IMO).

@8000 Saiyans Konosuba is hilarious and very popular among many anime fans, heck my avatar is from the show! Musume Pretty Derby is...something to say the least but I still feel that Ocean needs to get it. Here's the trailer if you wish to see it.

@Soul-dragon And I also disagree with Funimation on how they view the Ocean Group.

Chris Sabat has described them as "legends" and "badasses". Hell, he's even friends with Brian Drummond and Scott McNeil (which is something I can't say for someone else who can't accept that other voice actors have done the voice for a character he's associated with) and cast Drummond as Copy Vegeta.

I'm not sure if I'm just imagining things, but I recall a tweet from Autovolt where he asked Funimation to bring back the Ocean voice actors to redub Escaflowne and Sabat liked that tweet.

I guess that deep down, he wishes that Ocean could have redubbed it.
said at 8:57 AM on Sun Jul 8 2018
@8000 Saiyans Yeah Sabat does have a lot of respect for them. The fact that he got Brain Drummond for a filler villain in Super says that much.
said at 9:16 AM on Sun Jul 8 2018
@8000 Saiyans I think Funimation could have at least set up a poll for their Kickstarter backers and maybe their other fans to vote, so they could express whether they wanted an in-house Funi dub or for it to go back to Ocean. I mean, they were asking their fans for the money to pay for the stupid thing, why not give them some options? I'm sure there are some fans who would have preferred that over some bonus features or fancier packaging.

Even if an Ocean dub had to be made into a stretch goal, I'm sure they could have managed that, considering they made more than twice as much money as they were asking for in the beginning.

I also agree with the comments below saying that Funimation probably didn't need Kickstarter money to make this dub happen, but decided to ask for it anyway so fans could carry the financial burden. I would almost go as far to say that the only thing that would justify the Kickstarter to begin with IS an Ocean dub, assuming it really would be that much more expensive.

@PsychicVoiceSpy Most of the votes probably would have gone for Funimation.
said at 5:21 PM on Wed Jul 11 2018
@8000 Saiyans Maybe, maybe not. Still would have been better than being given no choice. I'm sure there would have been quite a few people who either had fondness for the original dub, or wanted something different than Funimation's usual.

I still think it was a very shady business move on Funimation's part. Sunrise are also redubbing Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny (previously dubbed by Ocean) for their HD remaster but they're at least paying for it themselves and not asking fans to fund it. Funi are just cheap and didn't want to pay for it in case it didn't sell well enough, they basically let fans take all the financial burden and freed themselves from any risk.

Despite the fact that they claimed dubbing costs were too expensive it wouldn't surprise me if their dub's budget was small considering they do things non-union in Texas. Since the Ocean cast was all union actors I could understand having higher costs in order to bring them back but they clearly took the cheaper option. They probably pocketed part of the Kickstarter money on top of all the profits that they now get from continually selling the blu-rays. I'm surprised they got away with it to be honest, but their fans are sheep so I'm not too surprised.

@NitroEX It's common knowledge that dubs made in Texas, are really cheap. This is confirmed by many actors that have worked with FUNimation. This whole Kickstarter campaign they did for Escaflowne has irked me from the beginning. There was no need for it.

There is something I have been wondering ever since they announced a redub of this show. Was there a reason why they didn't outsource this to Ocean Studios?
said at 1:26 PM on Tue Aug 2 2016
@Shaun Ince Because the HD deleted content amounts to about 10 minutes of material and Funi's too cheap to bother outsourcing for the sake of that plus redubbing all 26 episodes.
Shaun Ince
said at 2:41 PM on Tue Aug 2 2016
@CatsTuxedo That makes total sense. FUNi being cheap making the most sense. A dubbing company with such a huge monopoly over a large majority of anime, definitely has money to outsource a dub to Ocean. But they decide not to. A shame really. Ocean VA's are very talented, some even more so than a majority of Funi's talent. But they rarely get any anime dubbing opportunites. Sigh...

said at 5:01 PM on Sat Nov 5 2016
@CatsTuxedo I mean I know we don't have exact numbers but I'm pretty sure all that money they've made off of Dragonball in general, probably could have gone towards outsourcing this dub. But that's wishful thinking at this point. I think I'm just more annoyed at the fact that they don't go the extra mile
said at 3:58 AM on Sat Jun 3 2017
@Shaun Ince I actually started watching English dubs with Ocean Group, but then later found Funi. Now I kind of have the mindset that both studios are pretty equal in talent, though Ocean has some super-talented 'character actors' at their disposal (like Michael Daingerfield... I think the only way Funi could top this was to hire Ben Diskin. XD Who honestly has the most talent and range I've heard from any English voice actor).
Shaun Ince
said at 11:41 AM on Sat Jun 3 2017
@Beldarius I feel these days a lot of Ocean Group's talent is very over looked. Ever since FUNIMATION & Bang Zoom have stepped into the mix. We rarely get an anime dubbed at Ocean Studios anymore. Thanks to Crunchyroll, now we have Ocean back in the dubbing scene & I'm very happy about that.

Shaun Ince
said at 2:03 PM on Sat Jun 3 2017
@Abdullab Gintama is also a parody anime of sorts. They make tons of references to other Shonen Jump shoes & even have parody episodes based off of them. One prominent anime they parody a lot is Dragonball & there's several Dragonball parody episodes. And they're all hilarious.
Shaun Ince
said at 8:14 PM on Sat Jun 3 2017
@Beldarius Well since we're talking about vocal range, I think Ocean has FUNimation beat on that front. All the veteran VA's like Brian Drummond, Scott McNeil, all of the Dobson brothers, Lisa Ann Beley, Kelly Sheridan,Tabitha St Germain, Janyse Jaud & several others, have massive amounts of range. Same thing with former Ocean Group actors such as David Kaye & Trevor Devall.
Shaun Ince
said at 7:26 AM on Thu Jul 20 2017
@Beldarius It's also worth pointing out that Ocean works on quite a fair amount of cartoons which usually boast a large amount of characters. They get more chances to show off their vocal range. Combine that with great acting is a huge plus in my opinion. I think that's a large reason as to why I prefer LA & Canadian voice talent to the voice talent in Texas. That's not a knock on FUNimation though, as I feel they have a lot of good voice actors in their dubs. Just a preference & a bit of bias on my part.

said at 3:00 PM on Mon Jun 6 2016
@King Marth 64 No, Funimation should not try to repair what doesn't need to be repaired! There are already two dubbed versions:

1. The edited Fox Kids version
2. The uncut version with the entire Fox Kids cast reprising their roles

But if you really want another dub that badly, then try requesting California ADR voice actors; like Crispin Freeman, Steven Blum, and/or Yuri Lowenthal
said at 3:22 PM on Mon Jun 6 2016
@MrWii000 The new dub is a bit of a necessity because the deleted scenes that were restored in high-def were never dubbed, and since apparently Funi isn't willing to outsource to Ocean, the only way to maintain some kind of consistency is to make a fresh dub from scratch.

Also, it seems pretty hypocritical of you to argue that a new dub shouldn't be made and then turn around and start suggesting LA players for another dub :/

He should be aware that we have guest request forums that are specifically made to request additions to pages. That's not what THESE pages are for. So then I gave you a second chance with your obviously poorly worded, rude and snarky remark. And now a third, equally condescending comment? "Would it kill you to update the rest of the Ocean cast?" You're telling us to "get our act together"? You're saying that we "can't be bothered to fix this"?

1.) In case you weren't aware, the entirety of this site's database is maintained and updated by less than 10 VOLUNTEERS in our SPARE TIME. We don't work here. We add WHAT we're able to WHEN we're able to. You'll have to forgive us if we're not catering to YOUR specific wants 24/7.

2.) Feel free to make any content addition requests in the appropriate guest request forum. They're not new. (

3.) In the future, it might be better to word your comments in a way that don't make you come off as an impatient child.

4.) I've unblocked your original comments, so that people can see for reference the kind of discourteous attitudes we have to deal with on a daily basis.

After reading about these recent cast announcements, I feel I have to share a good few other people's un-enthusiasm about this new dub, since about half of the players come off as miscasts (Strait, McDonald and Mignogna in particular) and Strait doesn't have that hot a track record as a director. Ocean not being called for another go-round was a damper already, but this seems like an outright ball-dropping waiting to happen.
said at 8:51 AM on Wed Mar 30 2016
@CatsTuxedo Agreed.

Vic really doesn't fit Folken in any way whatsover. If anything he should have been Allen since he's dubbed over Shinichiro Miki a few times like as Kurz Webber.

Joel McDonald maybe could work as Dilandau but at the same time, I'd prefer a female actress or an actor like Josh Grelle or Greg Ayres who can pull off a more feminine vibe in their performances.

The only casting I maybe see as any sort of improvement is Caitlin Glass as Hitomi, I mean don't get me wrong I love Kelly Sheridan but I always felt she was awkward in the role of Hitomi sounding kind of unnatural and not like her usual self, granted I think now she could have finally nailed it in this re-dub, it's a shame really.

I'm more likely going to vote for the Ocean VA's when we get voice compares started of this series.

This re-dub had so much promise and now it feels just so pointless and wasted. I might just stick with the somewhat dated yet more fitting Ocean dub.
said at 9:45 AM on Wed Mar 30 2016
@Autovolt Vic as Folken baffles me as well. Funi's been getting him to voice a lot characters who had deep voices in the Japanese version recently- there's Roland in Lord Marksman and Vanadis and Mendoza in Garo. The deepest I've ever heard him go is Uatu. If he surprises me, I'll happily eat my words.

I think Sonny could be a good Allen, though. I was pleasantly surprised by the voice he used for Bernard in Maria the Virgin Witch. That voice could work for Allen, and although he'll obviously need to change something to fit Allen's personality; I have faith in him and Joel (I prefer him to Greg/Josh- I tend to find their higher-pitched voices grating).

Regardless, I'm still looking forward to this dub.
said at 2:25 AM on Thu Mar 31 2016
@CatsTuxedo To be fair, did we really expect anything different? FUNimation has outsourced only one dub to Ocean since DBZ, and that was a 5 episode sequel to a very well-regarded dub of theirs (arguably their most popular). Heads would have rolled if they replaced that cast. Escaflowne on the other hand is a 26-episode series with a dub done 15 years ago that got a mixed reception at the time, and that few remembered until now. There was no reason for them to go out of their way to get it's cast back. I would not have minded them getting Ocean back, it would have been cool, but I was fully expecting them to be replaced when I heard about this. What would be the point of doing a whole new dub with the same actors anyway instead of just recording the extra scenes? It's the same reason they didn't bother with Shakugan no Shana's cast. They had over 50 episodes and a movie to dub of a niche show, and Ocean's season 1 dub got a mixed reception anyway, so why bother?

But I'm looking forward to FUNimation's new dub. They have some really talented actors on board, and some interesting casting choices. I'm willing to give it a chance. I miss Ocean's work too, and I know you're a big fan of their actors, but that doesn't mean FUNi's work isn't equally as solid.
said at 9:30 AM on Sun Apr 3 2016
@PurpleWarrior13 the reason they didnt reprise Shana was because of that stupid delay. That ANNcast in December 2011 mentions that Funi was indeed in talks with Ocean concerning Black Lagoon and Shana but decided for the latter with a local cast due to the delay mixed in with the large episode count, and look at how that one turned out *cough*Greg Ayres's Keisaku Sato*cough*

I actually was fine with a possible redub for this series but that they just made such blatant miscasts that it pretty much makes whatever money they spent on this completely wasted, and then J. Michael Tatum is doing the script, which means unnecessary meme overdose. Also, the fact that the British Anime Limited is doing a remastered release and the remastered footage also contains the Ocean dub (just with footage cut to fit with the dub) makes Funimation's justifications for a redub even more pointless.

Also, it's actually cheaper to just give the episodes containing the extra footage to Ocean (which is only 6 episodes really) and reprise the cast and just release them as "extended edition" episodes, like what ADV did with the Director's Cut episodes of Evangelion on their Platinum release. ADV did not have to redub the whole series just because there exists remastered footage and extended versions of certain episodes.
said at 7:10 PM on Sun Apr 3 2016
@Domayv Can they, though? Even if Ocean did dub the extra material, they'd have to recast Dilandau (if he appears in the new material) at the very least or get Andrew Francis to redub all his lines. And in anime, actors always record in bulk- would it really cost-efficient for Funi's to outsource Escaflowne to Canada and go through the trouble of getting Kelly, Kirby and everyone for what would amount to less than two episodes' worth of new material? We'd be happy, but I don't think it's very practical for Funi as a business.

I understand the sceptism concerning some of the cast choices, but voice actors (even the experienced ones) HAVE surprised us before, and I think you're being a bit hasty in deeming the Funi dub a waste of effort at this point.
said at 9:10 PM on Sun Apr 3 2016
@mweloo BigOnAnime. Read his twitter posts about Escaflowne kickstarter
said at 9:17 PM on Sun Apr 3 2016
@nikipotamus If they can't use Andrew for Dilandau in the extra material because he sounds too old now, they could get David A. Kaye to do him instead.

Also, these are 6 half-hour long episodes (it's the whole episodes, just like what ADV did with those Director's Cut episodes of Evangelion on their Platinum release), and Funimation was able to outsoruce 5 of them (Roberta's Blood Trail) to Ocean, so this wouldn't be too much of a problem.
said at 10:33 PM on Sun Apr 3 2016
@Domayv 1. The Black Lagoon dub was highly acclaimed. I really like Ocean's Escaflowne dub, but I got the sense that the general reception from fans was lukewarm at best. Funi probably thought they were taking a smaller risk.
2.Consistency. It's been 15 years since the original dub. If Funi outsourced the extra material to Canada, there'd be a big variation in sound quality across the board, with only six episodes out of 32 sounding/"feeling" noticeably different from the rest. And I don't think Funi's willing enough to let Ocean dub the entire series again.

I should stop here before I start sounding too snappish; I don't want this to escalate into an argument.
said at 10:52 PM on Sun Apr 3 2016
@Domayv Anyway, thanks for telling me that there were six episodes. I was led to believe otherwise, and I now know where you're coming from with the Black Lagoon comparison. Should've probably mentioned it on the last post, but, well.
said at 11:27 PM on Sun Apr 3 2016
I'm hindsight, the end of my second post came off as sounding abrupt a little rude, so I'm sorry for that. I tend to get a little prickly when people talk about Funi's redub.
said at 12:35 AM on Mon Apr 4 2016
@nikipotamus then look at Evangelion. When ADV got those Director's Cut episodes for the Platinum repease, numerous recasts too had to be made. People didn't fret over it too much. Also, ADV did not have to redub the whole series because of that. Just those episodes, same with Escaflowne episodes having the extra footage if Funi gave it to Ocean.

As someone who shamefully had never gotten around to seeing the show, I was a little bit annoyed with FUNimation's recasting of the series.

I had assumed they'd set a 500k goal & aim for the original Canadian English cast, & that it would be a way to see the show uncut.

When they began announcing the cast, I got real touchy over it. I really like these actors individually, & would like more recognition from big-name VO directors (yeah, Strait, Tipton, Clinkenbeard, are that good), but it really felt like a missed opportunity for what is essentially the most competitive dubbing studio in North America.

The Canadian talent pool has recently also been given a little recognition with MLP.

this was before I learned that there is, indeed, an uncut version of the Ocean Group's production of The Vision of Escaflowne.

& that...has made all the difference.
said at 10:17 PM on Tue Mar 29 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed The Ocean dub only covered the Japanese broadcast version of the series. There were extra scenes cut from that version that were put back in the HD remastered version. Since those scenes were never dubbed, FUNimation was in an awkward position. I highly doubt they would've considered redubbing this series if there were no extra scenes.

This has nothing to do with the heavily edited version of the Ocean dub that briefly ended up on FoxKids.
said at 12:51 AM on Wed Mar 30 2016

Right; I always assumed that Escaflowne had only been given an edited Fox Kids dub, & assumed that we never got a proper Ocean Group dub.

I'm fine with having an Ocean dub even without the new scenes, though of course, it would have been ideal to have the entirety of it in the same track.

I'll be just fine with this release. Thanks.

@PsychicVoiceSpy Black Lagoon is one of my all time favorite dubs. Most of Oceans pioneer stuff was top tier.

@Plevak What is with your raging hate boner for Ocean?

I am not surprised that FUNi decided to do a new in-house dub for this show. As much as I love Ocean's handiwork and the original Uncut dub was a good reason why but I am willing to give this new dub a chance.

However as much as I am a big fan of Vancouver VA talent to those who ask "Why can't FUNi just use Ocean for this new dub?" in which I ask what would be the point? For those who don't already know yes the old Fox Kids showing of Escaflowne had a lot of edits but Bandai did give the series a full uncut with the same cast. If Ocean was going to be used with this redub then a few characters would most likely have to be recast. (Mainly Dilandau but probably a few certain others like maybe Gaddes since Ward Perry has been a bit MIA in the Voice Acting scene for a while.) Sure there are Anime Productions that I would like to hear Ocean get to try to redub such as Dragon Ball, the Mega Man Battle Network shows and to a lesser extent DBZ but I am not sure about Escaflowne.

However while a new dub with FUNi voice talent in Texas could potentially work if there was going to be a new dub using a different region I would've much preferred if California would have a crack at it. Allen Schezar is well known as one of Crispin Freeman's Dream Roles and I can definitely see why. Granted there is a chance that he might be willing to go to Texas just to get a chance to work on Alen Schezar if given the chance. After all Crispin has done things like that before for Zelgadis from Slayers (Texas for Slayers Premium and even go back to New York for the Slayers Revolution shows.)

@Pokejedservo The quality of Ocean's voice acting has improved a lot since the original Escaflowne dub, so this would be the ideal opportunity to get a more polished go-round in. I mean, look at Funi's DBZ Kai compared to their take on the original series. Shouldn't Ocean be given a second chance like that too?

@CatsTuxedo And Ocean was already making quality stuff by then (Ranma 1/2), but I've read that they were given some problematic scripts to work with for this show.

One of the issues for them early on was that even though they already had quality staff and actors to dub things, the companies that hired Ocean didn't always ask them to do very faithful translations.

So unfortunately, there are some people out there who still mistakenly think of them as being somewhat incompetent or inconsistent because of the things that were out of their control, which sucks.

@PsychicVoiceSpy They were inconsistent with a good chunk of the secondary characters. Dallet, Shesta, and Gatti had at least three separate actors/actresses throughout their tenure, Yukari was replaced at the end, two of the generals under Adelphos were changed at least twice or three times around. That being said, it certainly wasn't the worst English dub that Ocean/Bandai ever produced.

@CatsTuxedo I really do miss it when Ocean was dubbing anime. The Black Lagoon dub is the greatest of all time IMO, and Death Note isn't far behind. I also adore their Ranma and Gundam dubs. They always put out quality work, but I think at this point, the industry has long moved on from them. Most of their actors get plenty of work in regular cartoons, and anime companies like Viz and Aniplex seem comfortable with studios like Bang Zoom and Studiopolis. New York isn't getting any new anime work for the same reason.

It's a shame they LOST another show though, their third to FUNimation alone, but their dub isn't going anywhere. It will still be on FUNimation's collector's edition. I'm willing to give the new cast a chance too.

@Pokejedservo I highly doubt Crispin will be involved in this. He mentioned on Twitter that he only works on SAG projects now, and I'm not sure if he would travel anyway. Slayers Revolution/Evolution-R was recorded in both NY and LA.

Yes this is going to be a FUNimation in house dub. Not a redub with Ocean's VA as some people(including me) initially thought.

It's definitely gonna pass the 150k mark easily. As for the dub, I'd love if Funi let New Gen have it. I know Johnathan Klein has said numerous times it's his dream project.

Apparently, if the Kickstarter doesn't meet the goal, the uncut HD release will be sub-only. Personally, I don't see the point in redubbing an entire series just to accommodate for what amounts to like 10 extra minutes of material, so I won't feel bad if that comes to pass.

@CatsTuxedo Well the kickstarter is about to pass it goal as it's about over $145,000 dollars and only a matter of time till it hits it. So the redub will happen.

@emac Needless to say, it's already past $152,000 as of this comment. I'd like the Ocean Group actors to reprise their roles (or at least see Andrew Francis rerecord his part as Dilandau) but I'd understand if Funimation uses their own actors instead.

@Redeye64 I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense for Funi to not outsource to Ocean and allow them a reprise, considering the Canadian dollar's down the toilet right now and that'd make it cheaper to hire them (150k for us would be like 200k for them). Not to mention Ocean's gotten a lot better since the original dub, which I assume is the reason Funi didn't dare try to recast for the Black Lagoon OVA.

Either way, I'd rather they went with a female VA for Dilandau this time around, not just out of personal preference but because it makes more sense in-universe.

So they're doing a kickstarter for Escaflowne...that's fine and all but am I the only one who wants the Ocean cast back for this new re-dub?

Yes I'll admit some of the acting and scripting was a bit wonky, it was a early 2000's dub after all, it hadn't been truly perfected yet.

I did love the casting choices, Kelly Sheridan as every girl Hitomi, Kirby Morrow as the hot blooded Van, Brian Drummond as the cool Allen, Paul Dobson as Folken, hell I even liked Andrew Francis as Dilandau....yeah I'll admit he was kind of the weakest part of the dub but I thought casting a child VA did make for a unique androgynous voice and performance even if in the long run it wasn't the smartest choice, I feel Saffron Henderson really should have been Dilandau but oh well.

I really would love to hear these VA's get to work with a stronger script and voice direction, I'm sure Karl Willems would gladly come back to do this, if they just out source it to the,.

Realistically if FUNimation is going to dub it in house and most likely they'll cast Austin Tindle as Van or some newcomer for either him or Hitomi which I guess would be fine but I dunno, the Ocean dub cast just had charm to it.

@Autovolt Getting the Ocean voices back should be the $1 million stretch goal.

$5 million and Viz dubs it union.

$10 million dollars and every anime dub company in the Anglosphere does their own dub.

Oh, my god! I just heard on Kickstarter that Funimation is gonna be doing a brand new English dub of this! I can't wait to hear the dub cast for this!

@UK-Otaku yeah, I heard about that as well. the kickstarter should reach it's goal easily.
