I just watched this recently and I laughed at it a lot, and I think it's one of the funniest cartoons (particularly ones that are based off of video games) I've ever seen.

I really like this show. It's a great slice of life cartoon that doesn't take itself super seriously. Also it's full of memes and the writers do get pretty creative with them. Eggman gets the best material in the show & Mike Pollock delivers a great performance. In fact, I'll say this is his greatest performance as Eggman thus far.

One thing I will say. Nika Futterman sounds very similar to Cree Summers when she's voicing Sticks, it's easy to get confused sometimes.

Even though he'll probably never see this, I would like to thank Bill Freiberger for confirming so many of the characters actors.

Apperently storyboard artist Clemence Liberge said their will be a Season 3, and Bill has said that after season 2 ends, he will no longer be involved with the series.

I somewhat like this show- most of the jokes are genuinely funny, and the performances are strong all across the board (I find Roger Craig Smith's take on Sonic really endearing.)

That said, I wish they'd balance out the humour with some drama. I'm not asking for grand plots or dollops of angst or anything- just a little more introspection from the cast. The earlier episodes had enough to satisfy me, but I feel like the series is turning into a full-blown comedy now.

This series just doesn't do it for me. It has its good points; some of the gags are funny, Amy's re-characterization works for the most part, and Shadow's episode gets perk for said character just doing what he does best.

But... It lacks energy. Most of the series features low-key, almost sitcom-my plots that don't take advantage of the best parts of the franchise. Where are the over-the-top, elaborate fight sequences? Where are the goofy quips? Why is Sonic so downbeat and frustrated all the time? Why is Knuckles such an un-nuanced idiot? Why does Sticks have no discernible direction or focus to her character?

And seriously, what happened to Eggman's voice? Mike Pollock's voice seems to have lost its from-the-gut, macho confidence, and it sounds more grating now. I'm guessing this is the director's fault, because he soudns the same in the games.

I don't blame you guys for liking this series. I can definitely see where the appeal is, but I just feel it totally misses the mark compared to what I feel a series placing these colorful characters in a mundane setting should be. To me, it feels like a poor attempt at what the Looney Tunes Show did much better.

Is Scratch and Grounder being on here too much to ask?

I mean the tone is like Adventures.
said at 7:08 PM on Thu Feb 11 2016
@pete I'm not an expert on the matter, but I think DHX Media might own the rights to all the original characters created for AoStH. But since Nintendo's able to use the Donkey Kong and Star Fox characters that Rare created, I can't say I'm sure what's up.

Course, Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts were based on generic enemy characters in the second Genesis game, so I'm also guessing that it isn't worth bringing back what, in-universe, amounts to one-off mooks.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 7:21 PM on Thu Feb 11 2016
@CatsTuxedo To my knowledge Sega don't own the rights to any of the characters from Sonic adaptations (e.g. AoSTH/SATAM/Underground, Archie comics, Fleetway comics, I think the OVA and Sonic X). So yeah, that's why none of those characters have ever appeared in the games.

Nintendo still owns the Rare characters from Donkey Kong and Star Fox games due to the nature of their contract/development (e.g. those are games directly published and funded by Nintendo, they simply allowed Rare to develop games with the IP), but they didn't keep any characters from original IPs created by Rare during that time (e.g. most of the original Diddy Kong Racing characters, Banjo Kazooie, Conker). But then similarly I don't think Nintendo own any of the original characters from, say, the Donkey Kong Country cartoon or DiC's Mario and Zelda since those are cases where the IP would be totally licensed out to other companies.

@Gaddes He'll probably improve over time. He's had significantly less lines than the main cast since the recast in 2010, and experience is always a good thing. Look at how much Amy's voice has improved since Sonic Generations.

I will say that I like this show...somewhat. It's not the greatest but ts trying. When it comes to the main cast, maybe they will have one line that's actually funny per episode.
That said, Mike as Eggman steals the show. It honestly feels like they put all their effort into Eggman because he never fails to get a chuckle from me.
It's not the best but it can be really funny.

Still upset it has no theme song, all Sonic cartoons at least had a theme song. Even the bad ones! It's called Sonic Boom and it doesn't use the Sonic Boom song (or at least a remix from that CD game or something)?
said at 5:56 AM on Sun Mar 22 2015
@Music Meister Yeah I think they put all of their effort into Mike Pollock's Eggman. Probably because it's one of the few consistently great things from this franchise and quite possibly the only thing the fandom agrees on.
said at 9:22 PM on Fri Mar 20 2015
From what I've seen in the first few episodes, Sonic Boom has not impressed me much. The humor, while occasionally making me chuckle a bit, is too forced and comes off as desperate in some areas. All in all, the show is okay-ish for what it is, but it's not for me.

At least it's a good place for Mike Pollock to shine as Eggman from a comedic standpoint. There's no denying that.

Well I`ve seen episodes 3 and 4,and I have too say they`re quite an improvement, the pacing is still a bit iffy, but on the brighter side the characters are starting to get more fleshed out as well as showing more of their interactions, there's more emotion in them, starting to show traces of the main characters friendship and I`m starting to like Sticks as a character.

 13 Shout Outs!
The first episode wasn't really much special. It had its moments, but overall it was fairly disposable. The second one, with Eggman crashing at Sonic and Tails' house, was actually pretty funny.

It's probably the freedom of the pre-lay format, but the voice actors sounded a lot more natural and effortless than they have in the last couple of games, especially Cindy Robinson (who's finally found her niche as Amy) and Mike Pollock, who sounds like he's having the time of his life. Eggman is fast becoming the best character.

The main criticisms are Sticks showing up with no introduction in ep. 2 (lazy writing), and that at times the rapid-fire jokes get too ahead of themselves and leave little breathing room for plot/character development, making the episodes feel shorter than they really are. The first episode especially felt rushed toward the climax, and I get the impression that without proper pacing, the style of humour used in the show would get tiring after a while.

Apart from that I'm rather pleased with how it's started out. I'm not sure it'll be a must-see, all-time classic series, but as far as first impressions go, that wasn't bad. It'll be interesting to see how it goes from here.

Assuming CN's decision to put it at a 7AM Saturday morning timeslot doesn't get to it first...
said at 6:12 AM on Tue Nov 11 2014
@NCZ 100% agree with you Admin :-) Sticks not having an introduction really annoyed me because I like her as a character so far. I only wish the episodes were longer, the rest of my issues are just nitpicks.

@SpongeBat1 She left as anyone says and i got to admit i thought it was Kate Higgins having a different tone of voice but turns out it was you guessed it: Colleen Villard as you know the voice of charmy bee in previous sonic games.

And from what i heard she pretty much sounds like kate higgins' with a bit deep tone and that makes 2 characters she voiced (Charmy and Tails) and i can already tell she'll do a great work cause she's awesome at voicing young boys especially girls.

The one thing that surprised me was that this show & the game will not be in Japan at all. I found that to be a little odd even if it's its own separate series. Also Sonic Team have nothing to do with this or the game, again I found that odd. A company called Big Red Button are making it along with Sanzaru. Weird ain't it.

And just who are Big Red Button??? I've never heard of before. What kind of games do they make?

@GothamRed Dear God.

As far as I'm concerned, Sonic Underground never existed.
said at 10:06 AM on Sat Feb 15 2014
@NCZ Underground gets a bad rep, It's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 10:18 AM on Sat Feb 15 2014
@GothamRed The main thing about Underground is twofold.

One - It feels like an attempt at Sonic fan fiction. It has a few elements of the Sonic series, but none of them completely grasp the "Sonic atmosphere". It doesn't do much to make a series set in the Sonic universe, but it rather transports a few elements into a new universe that is totally divorced from that of Sonic's, making it feel strange and unusual. Its new characters like Sleet and Dingo don't fit into the Sonic universe very well from a design point of view, for example. The concept of Sonic having siblings that look like him but in different colours is a common fan fiction idea. The fact that they fight with rock music is another very strange idea that doesn't have any basis in the original games.

Two - Leading into my second point, as a whole Underground feels like any other late '90s "dark" but youth-oriented cartoon, just with Sonic shoehorned in. It's pretty much a more generic version of SatAM, really.

I suppose the conclusion to make is that Underground doesn't really have its own identity to speak of. It tries to be a number of things, but it doesn't do them particularly strongly, I'm afraid.

It was the only Sonic series I was never really enamoured with. I watched it a few times when I was younger, but looking back I always felt there was something off about it. It's not one of the worst cartoons ever, it's just mediocre. And as a part of the Sonic series, it especially struggles.
said at 10:39 AM on Sat Feb 15 2014
@NCZ I wouldn't really say that, as It's own universe it worked fine, Everything fit within the context of what was happening. It was basically just a different approach to what SatAM did with freedom fighters fighting in a world ruled by Robotnik, but with a smaller cast and a different direction. Despite their fan-ficy origins Manic and Sonia are good characters who often get over-looked, as well as other members of the supporting cast. It's also not that dark of a show, tonally I'd say it's actually less Dark than SatAM tried to be.

As for Sleet and Dingo not fitting into Sonic's design aesthetic, I wouldn't really say that. Sonic has tended to alter it's design style between games in it's series, I mean just look at how Humans look in the Adventure series compared to to how they look in Unleashed. They never felt out of place design wise when I watched the show.

And being perfectly honest the rock music thing isn't even close to the strangest thing that has been implemented in the sonic universe before. I mean this is the series that featured hedgehogs with guns on motorcycles, a stretchy-armed werewolf, a human girl kissing a hedgehog corpse and traveling into story books to fight genies and knights. Compared to that instruments that shoot lasers is fairly grounded.

Just like with Sonic Boom here they've always attempted to try new things with the sonic games, some work out some don't, but I think Underground is fine for what it is.

@NCZ What's wrong with Knuckles?

@Music Meister He looks like he's on steroids; he's way too big and chest-heavy. And if you look at the full-body shots of him in the game and the concept art, the disproportionate size of his massive chest and arms to his slim legs is really jarring.

Good to see the current voice cast of the games back for the new cartoon.

@Mikel One exception. Colleen O'Shaughnessey will be voicing Tails.

There's also a behind-the-scenes video that has a clip of the whole cast recording together and you can hear some of her take... she actually sounds a lot like Kate Higgins, which is nuts.

@Mikel Too bad it doesn't make a lick of sense to do so on account of Sonic Boom not even being considered part of the official Sonic canon. There's simply no point in having the voice actors consistent with the rest of the series if nothing else is.

@CatsTuxedo I'm not sure I understand this complaint. Sonic X wasn't canon either, but it used the same cast as the games. Replacing them would be like if they got some new guy instead of Charles Martinet to voice Mario in Smash Bros. because it's not canon to the Mario series. There'd be no real point, creatively or logistically.
said at 3:05 PM on Sun Apr 27 2014
@NCZ Large segments of Sonic X are explicit adaptions of the two Dreamcast games, so it actually does make sense for X to have the same VAs as the games (even if that wasn't the case yet when the show started). Sonic Boom is an entirely different entity altogether and both the game and the show were officially declared non-canon by the developers, so there's no logical reason for them to have the same VAs as the canon games.

And on a side note, unlike Sonic, Mario isn't really meant to have a steady storyline to begin with, so the VA casting there doesn't matter a whole lot.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a little sore that Vancouver's talent pool was passed over on another chance to voice a Sonic production that isn't by DiC.

@CatsTuxedo Think I'll take the opportunity to articulate my point a little more.

If the VAs of a running canonical series were to appear in, say, a party or racing game or whatever wouldn't necessarily be considered canon, as long as the characters and the setting are in line with the canonical series, there'd be no issue because the characters themselves are effectively the same as they are in the canon series.

It has been established that Sonic Boom is an entirely different story with an entirely different setting and significantly different interpretations of the characters, so you'd think it'd be sensible to bring on new VAs to match these particular incarnations of the characters. I'm aware that SEGA has gone on record saying that they aim for consistency in their voice casting in terms of this series, but in this instance it hardly makes sense because this is an explicit divergence from the established canon.

To help you see what I'm getting at, imagine if the Batman '66 show was considered the official canon version of Batman, so they kept those same actors for B:TAS, obviously an entirely different canon, for the sole purpose of "maintaining consistency". It wouldn't make much sense there, and it doesn't make much sense here.

@CatsTuxedo They just want to keep a consistent voice cast, and there's nothing wrong with that. I think you're taking the franchise way too seriously, and what you say would really only make sense if this was live action. They've recast the whole franchise before a couple times, but only for business reasons. There are MANY cartoon/video game franchises that have different universes, but try to keep a consistent voice cast as much as they can. The characters are still the same even if their universe isn't (it happens all the time in anime on both sides of the pacific).

Also, Adam West and Burt Ward voiced Batman and Robin respectively in The New Adventures of Batman in the late 70s, and West later voiced Batman again in the later seasons of Superfriends. There's nothing wrong with changing the voice cast between universes, but there's also nothing wrong if they keep the same cast. Personally, I prefer the latter, especially for kids' franchises (and yes, Sonic is a kids franchise). Changing the voices might be confusing.
