An alright dub but when compared to the other dubs of the newer series it really isn't up to scratch.

Some good performances here and there but a lot of disappointing ones especially JYB as Jonathan Joestar.

It's clear Warner just rushed the dub out to cash in on it's Western possibility.

For me it always seems telling that when people dislike the dub they can usually say exactly what they didn't like about it, but then when people say they didn't mind it their thought is usually "I don't think it's THAT bad". I really don't think there's anything wrong with people observing that it could have been so much better when it is true that the dub was rushed out by WB in order to cash in on the series's western attention.

There's nothing wrong with people pointing out how it could have been done better. I just personally don't see it the same way they do, that's all.

Well that's the nice thing about diversity of opinion really. Some may think of critiques as nitpicks, but for me personally my problems with the dub really come from a fundamental nature. That's why I think it's important to articulate why one thinks the way they do.

Indeed. I do write paragraphs for critiques/nitpicks on some particular dubs as well, so I understand how that goes, haha.

@MizukaS I think the dub is OK personally, but my main issue was how phony and fake a majority of the accents sounded. Don't get me wrong I loved some performances (Joseph, Dio and Caeser) but the accents needed some serious work.

It's funny because the more I think of it, the more I realize a lot of my problems with this dub are similar problems that I had with Breath of the Wild's.

It's a pity that Rino Romano doesn't do dubs, he would have been a great choice for Caesar since he's of Italian descent.

Robin Atkin Downes would have knocked it out of the park as Stroheim.

Many Americans are also of Italian descent. That doesn't mean they could do good Italian accents. Doing accents take training, and it has more so to do with where you're raised than what your origins are. That said, I disagree with your lack of appreciation for aforementioned three characters in the dub. I personally liked them.

A friend of mine kept pitching this series to me earlier last year and after a little bit of reluctance on my part, I finally gave JoJo a shot...

And I loved every second of it!

I'm also going to go against the norm and say I actually really enjoy the dub. While there are a few performances that could've been better, *cough* Stroheim *cough*, I didn't find myself having a problem with most of the cast. Ben Diskin, Patrick Seitz, Keith Silverstein and Paul St Peter were all splendid as their respective characters, and I even warmed up to JYB as Jonathan after a few rewatches. Though I don't think I'll ever get used to Stroheim or Caesar's unintentionally hilarious accent.

I recently finished Battle Tendency and I'm still not burned out yet. Feels good to revisit Stardust Crusaders since I watched the old series first, although I'm only a couple episodes in.

Now I watched this in Japanese mostly, but I did check out some of the dub and I share the sentiment that it could have been much better. There was also a mix of really good castings and ones that just miss the mark. Kaiji Tang was the biggest missed opportunity. I think he should have been Jonathan but instead he's Santana. I'm all for out of the box casting, Dave Mallow as Straights was much better than I would have thought, but Kaiji's voice for Santana feels very fake.

I'd been hearing so much about JoJo for so long. I finally decided to give it a try starting with the old series. Those were decent and I loved Jotaro vs D'Arby, but it just wasn't as amazing as I'd heard.

Then I watched just one episode of this show. Holy ****. Where has this been all my life? Just one episode and I love it already. I don't think I've ever gotten hooked on a show that quickly. This is incredible.

The OVA has its charm but it is a very abridged retelling of part 3. The new series are completely faithful to the manga from the very beginning and are really damn good.

@Metabad I stayed far away from that dub actually. I literally only watched the episodes with Charles Martinet as the senator and Roger Jackson as Hol Horse.

What I heard from everyone else was pretty weak though. Andrew Chaikin as Dio was particularly unfitting, although Nobuo Tanaka is arguably worse. Dio is more than a century old but he REALLY shouldn't sound it.
said at 4:20 PM on Wed Dec 28 2016
@Nightmare Crusher I understand, as a whole it was kind of iffy. I actually really liked Andrew Chalkin's Dio myself, it started out pretty stilted and unfitting and I wasn't too into it at first, but it got way better and much more sinister and well acted by the end. I also enjoyed Doug Boyd's Kakyoin and J.S. Gilbert's Avdol. Everyone else was kind of meh though, Joseph I felt was hands down the worst voice in that dub which is a huge shame considering how great his seiyuu is here.
said at 4:36 PM on Sat Oct 15 2016
I felt like a lot of this and One-Punch Man's dub fell flat from just blindly following the subtitles you see on CrunchyRoll/Daisuki respectively. And, it seems like those subtitles we got from them were not intended to be used in an English dub/rushed as they were.

I must say, I'm enjoying what we got with HxH 2011 (probably because more than a bit of the Japanese voice-direction wasn't to my liking), but why has Bang Zoom! been dubbing this way? Maybe they should have held off until enough of the manga releases had come over here - giving them those translations to work from. (Although I'm not clear on how the JoJonium or Murata's adaptation of OPM releases look here in the US. Do they also mostly have the same dialogue used in these dubs?)

Sorry if this came out haphazard

The implication that the voice direction was very "hands-off" puts a lot of things in perspective. The biggest problems with this dub were iffy voice direction and questionable casting choices. With a series as notable a legacy as JoJo, the actors deserved to have been held under a much tighter and more focused leash.

@SNaG Patrick Seitz was only the co-director. The other director was Kevin McMullan. The only other anime he's directed was Coppelion.

I really think for a series such as this they should've used Jonathan Klein and New Generation Pictures. Just look at his work on things like Hellsing and Valkyrie Profile. Klein is great at hiring actual British actors to voice British characters, getting voice actors who don't do quite as much anime to deliver memorable performances, and really squeezing unique stuff out of even the VAs who pop up in anime a lot.
said at 2:43 PM on Sun May 15 2016
@NCZ Thanks for clarifying that and adding that credit that wasn't there before!

Actually, I felt that the cheesy charm of having faux British accents worked well with JoJo, it's just that not all the performances went as delightfully crazy as they probably should have (with exceptions to Speedwagon and Will Zeppeli, who did excellent).

But Jonathan Klein would have been a good director too. Hellsing is definitely evidence of hammy acting still working with serious(ish) material. Of course, we know how WB handled JJBA. Hopefully now that Viz owns the rights the franchise will be dubbed better.

For all the dub's unevenness when it came to casting and directing, the adaptive script was great.

Something that bugs me about a lot of Bang Zoom dubs is that half the time the dialogue is translated from the Japanese so literally that the resulting English script sounds kind of wooden and unnatural.

With JoJo's, though, they got it right. They played it loose a bit more, they used some goofy era-specific terminology, they tried to actually ADAPT the script. I'd say that's definitely in the dub's favor.

This dub is... eh. Phantom Blood's part was definitely worse. The strange part is that the main characters are the iffy ones, whereas the side characters, like Speedwagon, are really solid.

Personally, I feel this was a case of bad direction. Case-in-point: Dio. Patrick Seitz is DEFINITELY capable of being more over the top and ham fisted than he was here.
said at 7:22 PM on Sun Apr 3 2016
@SNaG With all due respect, Patrick Seitz is like Travis Willingham in the weight of his voice- lower than people like Akio Otsuka, Banjo Ginja, etc.

I mean, I get he was Luke Valentine (who was also a vampire played by Koyasu), but it's just SO deep.

IMO someone like Liam O'Brien should have played Dio. He's like the closest thing typecasting & voice-wise we have to Norio Wakamoto in anime dubs

The opposite problem is with JYB as Jonathan - the same guy in Japanese played Kamina, for cryin out loud!

Also speaking of Liam, they REALLY need to have better scheduling, studio time, directors, & generally a half-decent budget the next time they work on this show.
said at 6:04 PM on Wed Apr 13 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed Well actually Jonathan was only voiced by Kamina in the movie from years ago that even the creator of the manga likes to pretend didn't exist. And as for Liam O'Brien as Dio, I'm under the impression that Liam may have switched to being a union voice actor so a problem of scheduling wouldn't of mattered anyway since this was non-union. Plus I honestly always thought that Dio's Japanese voice was too weak anyway.

@Ichigo341578926 I seem to remember reading (maybe on twitter) that Liam O'Brien only hasn't been popping up in so many anime/game dubs lately because family requirements mean it's more worthwhile for him to take higher-paying gigs, but he has no problem with doing dub stuff if it works out schedule-wise and such. Union has nothing to do with it.

I concede that mistake about Jonathan's JP VA. I believe the Japanese guy still had either straight-up darker voice timbre, or just better acting chops. IDRC but the Japanese seemed authentically deeper, versus Johnny.

Liam O'Brien has been openly doing both union & non-union work since 2005, after financial core became a permanent position.

Like Troy Baker, the Bailey-Willinghams, Matthew Mercer, Sam Riegel, Yuri Lowenthal, RCS, & a significant handful of other people who came from anime...

he either doesn't have the time, doesn't have agents' approval, doesn't want to associate with it (clearly not a problem here), or simply doesn't want to put in the effort for such amateur-level pay.

Frankly, I have a lot of respect for Liam in putting family first. He will always be one of "our guys" to me.

After seeing the first six episodes, as well as several clips of Battle Tendency, I have to say that this dub is excellent. Why are people being bothered by the accents when no one complains about the Engrish in the sub? Double standards I say. Why is it okay for JP VA's to badly pronounce words of another language, but when ENG VA's do it, everyone throws a fit. The accents are no where near as bad as everyone makes them out to be. Johnny Yong Bosch and Patirck Seitz are perfect as Jonathan and Dio. And while I would've preferred Liam O'Brien, Keith Silverstein does a great job as Speedwagon. For his brief appearance, Marc Diraison was flawless as George. Then again, when isn't Marc Diraison amazing? Joe Ochman sounds excellent as Zeppeli. He sounds very wise, Fatherly and fancy. From the clips I've seen, Ben Diskin is great as Joseph, but there's something I don't get. When Richard Epcar voiced old Joseph in the test dub, people complained that he didn't have an accent. Now, he does have an accent and people are complaining that it should be American? Double Standards, once again, it seems. Bryce Papenbrook has a very nice, smooth voice for Caesar, though the accent can waver at times. Personally, I would've gone with Roger Craig Smith using his Ezio voice, but I'm fine with Bryce. Oh, don't even get me started in the Pillar Men. Paul St Peter and CC Smith are beyond perfect as Wamuu and Kars, especially. Then there's the most controversial English voice, Stroheim. If Patrick Seitz wasn't already Dio, he could've used his Germany voice for Stroheim. If not him, than Steve Blum using his Red Skull voice, but I'm not sure if this dub is union or not. Dan Woren can sound great at times, but other times, he cam sound a bit strained. Oh, Wendee Lee as Lisa Lisa, just...beautiful. Just when I think her voice couldn't possibly get any more gorgeous. Stephanie Sheh is just adorable as Suzie Q. Even for her, she sounds truly beautiful and sweet. She has truly outdone herself. Overall, I'm very impressed with this dub, but that's just me. True, it changed out some iconic lines and phrases, but it also gave us some great rewrites, like "Hush, boy! You will nit speak my name in vain again!" or "My very blood is a symphony within me!" I'm stunned to see some people call this 4kids levels of dubbing. That's a very broad exaggeration of a statement. If people just tune out the sub and keep it out of their minds, they would very much enjoy it. If you ask me, dubs and subs are not meant to be compared. They are both meant to be enjoyed and respected in their own way. One more thing, David Vincent is a solid narrator and I really don't see the problem with JYB being reused as often as he is. As long as he fits the character and puts emotion into it, why does it matter? That's my two cents.
said at 9:34 PM on Fri Sep 4 2015
@BioZero216 That pretty much sums up what you say, and tbh, regardless if its sub or dub I enjoy listening to dub, mostly because I enjoy hearing the performances of the dub actors and their takes on the characters they voiced in the dub.
said at 6:46 PM on Sun Sep 6 2015
@BioZero216 I still think if a character is from a country where there could be an accent to use they should have an accent for the dub. It's when they give a character an accent when it's not needed that there's a problem. So giving the characters accents for JoJo actually makes a lot of sense.
said at 6:48 PM on Sun Jul 24 2016
@BioZero216 As for the reason why people praise the Engrish and not us pronouncing Japanese words, I think it's the sheer *ham* the seiyuus put into the words. The way they pronounce it is very memetic in nature, which makes their version of English more memorable than how we would render that same scene; it just becomes blander when dubbed, losing some of its original emotion.

 5 Shout Outs!
*sigh* I have a lot I want to say about this dub, but I'll try to keep it brief.

First off, Johnny Yong Bosch was hugely miscast. He's played so many lead characters at this point that I'm simply exhausted hearing him in these kinds of roles. And bless him for trying, but the man cannot pull off an accent to save his life. There are so many other talented actors that could've breathed life into this character that it's depressing to see it done half-heartedly. Lazy casting by the director, plain and simple.

Patrick Seitz as DIO is a mixed bag. He sounds quite rough in the beginning, lacking oomph in certain scenes (such as the kiss) and inconsistency regarding his East London dialect. It isn't until after DIO becomes a vampire that he becomes more comfortable in the role, adopting his Luke Valentine voice from Hellsing. There are moments where he impresses, but overall is underwhelming in comparison to Takehito Koyasu's sheer hamminess. I would've loved to see Cam Clarke or Antfish take a crack at it. They both have proven able to chew scenery with the best of 'em.

And speaking of accents, I echo the prior statements that they do more to harm the show than help it. Some actors can do them and others can't. The problem with Phantom Blood is that it is a period drama, and thus consistent accents are a must. Battle Tendency, on the other hand, is a globe-trotting adventure straight out of a pulp magazine. Ergo, the line's a little more blurred. Personally, I think Joseph would've sounded better without an accent. Caesar is more or less tolerable, with Bryce Papenbrook selling the performance with intensity to compensate for an otherwise laughable "Italian" accent.

Stroheim is, without a doubt, the single most disappointing voice in the dub. A mild Schwarzenegger impression can't hide the utter lifelessness on display here. It's especially odd when you consider that his English actor, Dan Woren, played Caster in Fate/Zero, another character well known for his dramatic speeches and high-pitched shrieks. Bad directing I suppose.

With all that complaining out of the way, I must say that this dub does have SOME redeeming qualities. Keith Silverstein is a natural fit for Speedwagon, and his steadfast voice helps keep the audience sane in a sea of mediocrity. But the true kudos goes to Joe Ochman as Zeppeli; easily the best voice work in all of Part 1. Finally, the Pillar Men steal the show in terms of Part 2 casting, especially Paul St. Peter as Wham.
said at 7:25 AM on Sun Aug 30 2015
@Voice_Box The dub was directed by a more new ADR director named Kevin McMullan, his only other credit was directing Coppellion's English dub.

I have a feeling getting a novice director was a bad move, especially for a high profiled popular show.

Honestly Patrick Seitz who has directed his fair share of works over the years could have done a far better job IMO.

Well at least we still have the subs and honestly Jojo is one of those shows that's too much fun watching subbed for the over the top performances and engrish.

True that. This dub wasn't terrible by any means, and I think some people are just overreacting a bit too much, but it wasn't superb by any means.

I still have high hopes for the Stardust Crusaders dub, though, since I liked what I heard from the test dub, as long as they keep Matthew Mercer and Richard Epcar and cast Steve Blum as Hol Horse. :)

@Voice_Box That is insulting towards Johnny Yong Bosch? Half-heartedly? Did yiu hear his Sunlight yellow overdrive? He put everything he had into that. And I have heard far worse accents than his, or anyone's in this dub. Besides, it does not matter how often he is used. What matters is putting emotion into it and fitting the charater, which I have yet to see him fail at doing. Also, how is he miscast? He sounds young, ploite and gentlemanly.

I'm pretty neutral on the subject when it comes to overuse, but I can understand where he's coming from when he says he's exhausted/burn out from hearing JYB in these roles. That same criticism about being overused translates to other mediums(V Cartoons & Video Game VA's) and I've seen the same complaints brought up. While I undestand how you feel annoyed about people bringing up the fact that he's overused, at the same time JYB shouldn't be exempt/exception to the rule just because you're a big fan of his work.

So apparently this dub has mixed reviews. Some love it, some hate it?

I've only listened to some clips some fans were nice enough to share but it seems like this dub is also a victim of several fake sounding accents like FUNimation's Black Butler dub... (which many also love and hate)

From what I see, the dub wouldn't rank amongst the best and I'd likely recommand sub over it, but it is nonetheless a competent dub.

The script writing is very well done for starter.

@LeDom Wait, a dub of an anime that takes place in mostly English speaking countries? There's no possible way that could work!

said at 8:29 PM on Sat Aug 8 2015
@Zabel It's not a terrible dub, but it's not great either. The fake British accents do more to hurt it than to help it I'm afraid. Thankfully that won't be a problem for the future parts of the manga, I suppose.

(Unless they do fake Italian accents for part 5.)
said at 2:46 PM on Thu Aug 20 2015
@NCZ I don't see them doing accents in part 5.

Just like how Monster doesn't have german accents and Virgin Witch Maria doesn't have french accents.

The point of an accent is the make a foreign character sound foreign. Doesn't make sense to have when everyone is from the same country.

(british accents are the exception)

Hopefully Warner Japan/Viz Media we'll have a full casting announcement before it comes out this September.

And although this seems to be unlikely, but it would be really awesome to hear Kira Buckland, Cristina Vee, JB Blanc, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey and Dave Wittenberg in the English dub version of JoJo and it's later seasons.

However I doubt it, as the latter primarily does Union-only work since around 2005/2006 with his most recent Anime being Tiger and Bunny, as for Laura and Travis they seem to be having a good time doing video games and continuing their roles in Critical role and the Marvel cartoons.

I found this, it's audio of from the dub shown at LA AX but matched to the actual scene it's from...other than maybe some difficulty from hearing Ben Diskin's Joseph due to the crowd going wild.

I have to say this dub sounds pretty darn good. I love that they are actually using accents. Patrick Seitz's Dio is pretty much perfect now. The actually fixed one of my few complaints from the test dub and I'm just so happy right now. :D
said at 11:58 AM on Sat Jul 4 2015
@Autovolt Based on those clips I think Speedwagon is being voiced by Keith Silverstein and Straits is being voiced by Dave Mallow.
said at 12:58 PM on Sat Jul 4 2015
@Ichigo341578926 I too think Keith is Speedwagon but Straits sounds more like Dan Woren to me.

So from the few clips I've seen of the episodes shown at Anime Expo, Johnny Yong Bosch's Jonathan seems to be the weakest performance I heard more than two words from. It didn't seem AWFUL or anything, but it does sound like he's not entirely sure of the sweet spot for that British accent. Still, I've learned that you can't judge a dub until you've at least seen one full episode in its entirety. Stuff that sounds weird as a clip can sound perfectly fine in the context of an entire episode (which is why you take any clips you hear in a trailer with a grain of salt).

Other than Bosch, though, everyone else seemed totally on point, from what I saw. I really liked Ben Diskin as Joseph, and of course Patrick Seitz's Dio gets better and better every time I hear it. The British accent, while subtle, really does add something (and I'd imagine Seitz is pretty good at accents, considering he does Hetalia, though of course in that he plays Germany), though I still love the accent-less version from his monologues in the Stardust Crusaders test dub. But I really hope once they get around to dubbing Part 3, they keep Dio's accent, even though they'll probably remove Joseph's.

@BlueScarabGuy Honestly, these sort of basic dialect issues only seem to be a concern for dub VA's. I mean a lot of these guys are new &/or journeyman VA's, & for the most part, the best VA's can pull off a good handful of accents (& do them *well*, at that). The Black Lagoon accents are *that* good because the Ocean VA's involved were pretty high-bar & the accents are a non-issue for them.

@NCZ Yeah. I was thinking Ben Diskin would have worked as Josuke from Part 4 instead.

Not sure who I could see doing Josuke now but I think this is a story for another time.

also it seems like Johnny Yong Bosch will have a role in the series since he will be a part of the Jojo panel at LAAX.

@NCZ Maybe Ben Diskin or Sam Reigel?
NCZ (Admin)
said at 10:08 AM on Thu May 21 2015
@BioZero216 The thing is, Jonathan's a big guy--a stereotypically macho '80s shonen hero. He needs a gruff, strong voice to match that.

It's a bit of a typecast, but someone like Marc Diraison could pull off what I'm thinking of.
said at 10:25 AM on Thu May 21 2015
@NCZ He doesn't have a stereotypically macho voice in the Japanese version, and while he has big muscles and enjoys manly activities like fighting and sports, he's a very kind and gentle character. I don't think he necessarily needs a super manly voice.

But I do agree that Marc Diraison would be a good choice, despite being typecast. He's an expert at playing manly heroes with big hearts, so I wouldn't mind that. Maybe a lighter version of his Guts voice.
said at 10:28 AM on Thu May 21 2015
@NCZ That would be great.

said at 10:33 AM on Thu May 21 2015
@PsychicVoiceSpy You know what I mean though. I didn't mean Jonathan's supposed to be "grr growly" all the time. I just meant it makes sense for him to have a hearty voice.
said at 10:55 AM on Thu May 21 2015
@NCZ Yeah, I agree that his voice should have some fullness. I guess the way you worded it just threw me off a little. When I think of a stereotypical '80s anime hero voice, I think of something like Kenshiro... which would be a bit much for Jonathan, to say the least.
said at 3:14 PM on Thu May 21 2015
@NCZ Marc Diraison would be a great choice IMO.
said at 4:47 AM on Fri May 22 2015
@Gaddes TBH, I can see him as Joseph a bit more.
said at 5:48 AM on Sun May 24 2015
@PsychicVoiceSpy Yeah his Japanese VA Kazuyuki Okitsu had a lighter voice than you'd expect and you know what I think it fits perfectly. I know i've said it before but he sounds almost like a Japanese Brad Swaile and personally that's my ideal voice for him in english.

I don't mind the idea of Marc Diraison as Jonathan but I'm with BioZero216, he'd work a lot better as Joseph, plus we know Marc has the comedic charisma for him thanks to the legendary Berserk dub bloopers.
said at 10:42 AM on Sun May 24 2015
@Autovolt I haven't watched anything past the Phantom Blood arc yet, so I wouldn't know if he's a better choice for Joseph or not, but Brad Swaile honestly sounds like a much better choice for Jonathan anyway.

@PsychicVoiceSpy Well I hope you get around to it soon. Battle Tendency is awesome and I'm sure you will love it and Joseph Joestar.

@Autovolt I've started the second arc. You're right, it's a blast so far and Joseph is a likable, total bad@$$.
said at 4:38 PM on Thu Jun 18 2015
@PsychicVoiceSpy Oh man, hope you enjoy it. The Stardust Crusaders arc may be the most popular arc, but Battle Tendency was hands down my favourite, so much over the top stuff happens in it, it has some of my favourite characters and it's amazing.

To clarify, my issue with a potential sub-only release is because Crunchyroll has already streamed the series with subtitles for the past year or so, and it'd be redundant to buy a DVD of something that's been readily available for a while now.

Eager to hear who they cast - whoever dubs Joseph has some very big shoes to fill.
