After finishing watching the show in Japanese, I decided to check out the dub because I'm always on the hunt for strong/top-notch dubbing. I know this may be an unpopular opinion but the dub to me doesn't sound well-done at all. The jokes fall flat thanks to lacklustre script-writing and delivery. Kyle Phillips has never been impressed me as an ADR Director (personally I like him more as a voice actor especially with his work in My Hero Academia and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K). While I do agree with others in saying that he's not afraid to cast lesser known talent (which I'll give him some credit for), I feel that he doesn't bring out strong and believable performances from his cast on a consistent basis and his voice direction isn't the best. While saying that, I do have to admit that the best casting he ever did was Tabitha Ray as Hotaru Shidare in Dagashi Kashi (don't know how he pulled it off but he did). Due to these issues I have with him, he'll never reach the levels that Mike McFarland and Colleen Clinkenbeard have with their work quality-wise. Personally, I would have loved to see this dub be directed by Apphia Yu instead because she did a fantastic job with The Disastrous Life of Saiki K and I'm sure she could pull it off with Hinamatsuri. Anyways, what's done is done and so I'm going to briefly share my thoughts on the standout characters:

Hina - Brina Palencia does sound deadpan here which makes sense but she sounds too bored and not like a child. Takako Tanaka, a newbie, managed to bring the perfect voice for Hina's character and personality and do a better job than a veteran voice actress. She sounds more like a child and bratty since she's supposed to be unlikeable anyway.

Nitta - Now I understand why the dub went with a mafia accent because it's the English dub equivalent of a Yakuza accent. No problems with that, but Jarrod Greene makes him sound more like a meat head rugby player than a father figure for Hina. Like Hina, Nitta also has a newbie voice actor who in this case is Yoshiki Nakajima and he did a better job than Jarrod.

Anzu - Nothing against AmaLee or anything and I certainly appreciate her efforts but she sounds too old as Anzu as in a more like a teenager rather than a pre-teen. Rie Murakawa absolutely killed it with a flawless performance worth being nominated for best supporting actress.

Hitomi - I agree with MadDude that Tabitha Ray did an alright job with it. Prefer Kaedo Hondo's portrayal of the character by far.

As you can probably tell, I prefer the sub over the dub for this show as it had some of the best voice acting I've heard in 2018.

@Silent-Ninja I kinda disagreed on this but only on the dub alone.

so can’t say much over your argument since I never see the sub and was been planning watch dub from start.

But I want say about Brian Palencie as Hina that (even without knowing how original sounded) Honestly just felt like a regular Brian performance there was really nothing out standing or special here.

You hear these big names for so many years I kinda know kind of performance they going to give. (Still love those love those guys.)

When it comes to anime, I always check out both English and Japanese versions and determine which cast sounds more fitting for the characters. For some shows, I prefer the Japanese version and for others I prefer the English version. Rarely, do I equally enjoy both. In Hinamatsuri's case, I happen to prefer the Japanese cast for this show as they sound far more fitting for the characters and the voice acting is superior. If you've only planned on watching this show in English, that's fine by me and I wasn't expecting to change your viewing habits anyway. Obviously, I didn't come here to simply trash a dub for the sake of it. I came here to calmly express my opinion of the dub even if it was a negative one. I'd rather be critical and honest than be too nice. Besides, it would be incredibly boring if we all shared the same opinions, right?

"But I want say about Brian Palencie as Hina that (even without knowing how original sounded) Honestly just felt like a regular Brian performance there was really nothing out standing or special here."

This we can certainly both agree on. Her best and most memorable role will always be Holo from Spice & Wolf to me.

@Silent-Ninja Really? I strongly preferred Amanda’s Yuzu to her Japanese counterparts. Don’t get me wrong I love Rie Murakawa as Ram and Est but her Anzu was way to shrill for my liking.

I won't deny that Anzu does sound higher-pitched in the Japanese version (not all the time) but it also has a child-like quality to her voice which makes sense because she's a child who hasn't reached puberty yet and not a teenager. Plus, it fits her rebellious personality. I don't know if you've watched Episode 6 but I thought her performance in that was fantastic and it gave me the feels.

My criticisms of Amanda's portrayal of Anzu still remain despite your personal preference towards her. Her portrayal would have worked better if Anzu was older imo.

 1 Shout Out!
Just finished all 12 episode. And man this going to be one of favourite all year.
And dub was really well done.
I started to Appreciate Kyle Phillips as ADR dictator a lot. I really like he used a lot of lesser known talent for this.
My two favourite performances were Ame Lee and Jarrod Greene.
While Hitomi was fav character but Tabitha Ray did a alright job.
And everyone else was petty good.

 3 Shout Outs!
So far that's a very unusual and nice cast for FUNi.

As of now besides Brina we have some of the lesser known names which is nice to see Kyle Phillips making use of.

@Soul-dragon For a FUNI dub that is quite a different cast.

As for Brina in Sentai/Seraphim stuff she was in New Initial D and Appleseed Alpha.
