This is unfortunate the moment when the dub for the Highschool DXD franchise began to plumet. I honestly like to call it the Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax of Highschool DXD and it's not hard to see why.
While Josh Grelle did have nice acting and a nice voice it just didn't fit Issei no where near as well as Scott Freeman's take. I wish they had chosen Newton Pittman myself. Kelly Angel/Bryn Appril was also insanely lacking as Akeno and failed to live up to both Teri Rodgers and Shizuka Ito. Morgan Garret would've definitely been a better fit.
Everyone else did a nice job. My favorite voices where Kristi Kang as Irina, Jamie Marchi as Rias, Chloe Daniels as Asia (still miss her...) and Sean O Conner as Yuko. I also have to give Cris George credit for pushing both Monica Rial and Aaron Dismuke out of their confront zones but outside of that it was most certainly not the strongest entry in the franchise...

Am I the only one that finds it funny that Monica Rial and Jamie Marchi switched their roles as mom and daughter for this series? In another series called Shuffle, Monica plays the daughter (Asa) and Jamie is the mom (Ama). That's RANGE, yo.

Seems like I'm one of the few people that doesn't think there's a decline in quality for the dub. That's fine. To each their own.

Regarding the recasts, I find Bryn Apprill to be a better Akeno than Teri Rogers. This might have to do with the fact that Bryn has more acting experience than Teri (in the sense that she gets cast in more significant roles). At first, it seemed like Bryn was doing an impression of Teri, but later on, Bryn improved from Teri's performance and made the role her own. Teri isn't bad at all, but Bryn just seems to emote better for Akeno.

On the other hand, Josh Grelle sounds quite different than Scott Freeman as Issei. Scott has a lower pitched voice, so I'm not sure what to think of Issei now that he has a higher pitched voice. Still, both VAs are very suitable as Issei, and they both provide great performances in their own style. Can't say I prefer one over the other.

Megan Shipman does a good job of doing a near-identical replication of Krishna Smitha's previous role of Grayfia (gotta say, she's quite good at impressions, as noted in her stand in role of IF in the Neptunia anime). Can't say I could tell the difference. She sounds way different as Orphis as well, so I gotta say - Megan's really good.

Here's to hoping for a wonderful dub for S4 as well!

Here's my theory on Kelly Angel's real identity. As I was told in my comment below, her real initials are B.A. I have also done research in the ANN forums. She is a newcomer who has gained quite a bit of attention lately. Also, in the first episode, her voice was rather high-pitched. She deepened it later, but some mannerisms of the voice are still a bit noticable. Combining all of those clues, my conclusion is that Kelly Angel is Bryn Apprill! Talk about range. I never would've guessed it was her.

Not to be rude... but was Young Akeno in a flashback not obvious enough? Sounds exactly like all her other little girl roles. Also anyone who watched Wanna be the Strongest in the World should've known since her Akeno voice carries over from that show's dub...

And it might surprise you to know you've got it mixed up. Akeno isn't showing range. It's more of less Bryn's natural speaking voice (watch some youtube panels or interviews with her), it's when she voices young girls that she actually adjusts her voice.

@Omar_Lopez Excuse me if I haven't seen enough of her roles to truly know her voice like the back of my hand. Also, what is with you and Mr Ecchi Man who claim to not be rude, yet what you say is insulting. Obvious? Anyone who's seen World's Stringest? That very much is insulting.

@Omar_Lopez

Good points glad I'm not the only one who noticed. Another obvious clue was for the Wanna be the Strongest in the World Shorts for whatever reason majority of the cast used brand new aliases here; I guess because the fanservice was increased several fold. Kind of pointless since all the voices sound the same as the TV episodes where most of the cast used their real names.

TL;DR Bryn's alias for the Sekatsuyo shorts is "Terri Angel". She used the "Angel" surname again as a new alias for BorN = Kelly Angel

Maybe she thought using "Terri" as a first/given name alias for DxD would be in bad taste since it's spelled almost exactly like Teri Rogers's first/given name.

Bryn's Akeno did nothing for me if you know what I mean. Even if FUNimation's doesn't redub BorN with Teri Rogers (which would be awesome) hopefully she can return in the future if there's a season 4 or if the OVAs are picked up.

However, I do finally know why Terri Rogers is no longer Akeno. She moved out of Dallas, and Funi believes that she changed her number as well, because they can't contact her. I don't know why she's trying to avoid them so much, but it seems that Josh Grelle and Kelly Angel are here to stay as Issei and Akeno.

@BioZero216
No offence but considering how you've been wrong before forgive me for not believing your word. Also it's "Teri" (it's spelled out for you on this site...)

From what I know she works as a librarian (when not acting) and on her twitter a month or so before BorN started dub production she tweeted a pic that her library was under going renovations.

Now depending on her position (if she's branch manager or a notable staff position) then yeah I can understand why she wouldn't be able to voice act for the unforeseeable future if she has to be heavily involved with overseeing the work progress or something.

However what you say could also have some truth to it. If she's just a regular librarian it's possible she was transferred to another library to work at (outside of Dallas) as a temp until her the work on her local library is complete. With broadcast dub schedules being as rushed as they are making frequent trips back to Dallas probably wouldn't be easy and as a temp probably doesn't have much flexibility or bargaining power to negotiate certain days off at her new work place.

Either way the circumstances suck but hopefully she can return someday as I'm not fond of "Kelly Angel" as Akeno (or any of her other work under her real name) Worst case scenario there is no season 4 of High School DxD considering how much of a disappointment BorN was or it could be 2-3 years before another season is green-lit.

There are still the numerous OVAs but considering FUNimation hasn't got them yet they probably have difficult licensing restrictions since they were bundled with reading material in Japan.

e.g. Kodansha Comics USA is releasing one of the OVAs of Attack on Titan with an upcoming manga volume but AFAIK it's sub-only. So maybe the DxD OVAs can only be released by Yen Press who releases the written works in the US (either way probably won't be dubbed)

For anyone who cares about the future of this franchise:

Volume 1 of BorN sold 5570 (BD+DVD) discs for week 1 of release.

The average sales for season 1 was 10040

The averages sales for season 2 was 9422

So yeah that's a pretty significant drop. As stated already the lower animation budget, retcons (bad writing) and adaptation process really hurt this season.

It's been said that for a 12-13 episode anime series to be profitable it has to sell between 4K-5K for each volume. (US and International sales make little difference; Japan will always produce anime for their home market first and if not profitable why make more content for only other countries that will bring in less money)

Not looking so good for season 3 so far... I predict volume 1 might sell a little over 6000 factoring in sales in the coming weeks but each following volume will probably decrease (especially volume 6 which is the filler episodes)

Total series average will probably end up being around 4000. Decent but not great... TNK doesn't really have any other titles doing well for them (which is why back in 2012 they basically bet their studio's future so DxD season 1 had high production values) so maybe they'll still commit to a season 4 and do better but at the moment it's not guaranteed... they could always pursue some other manga, light novel, etc to adapt

Really is a shame. I remember so many fans being excited when BorN was green-lit. BorN basically destroyed all the goodwill received from season 1 and 2. Ironically the dub also allowed itself to suffer.

Wouldn't be surprised if FUNimation's sales took a hit (not just from some fans boycotting it because 2 main VAs were unfortunately unable to return) but because fans were impatient. FUNimation streamed the censored version yet some fans synced the dub audio with the uncensored AT-X video.

Will they still buy it if they've already seen the uncensored dub that they normally would have to wait a year for?

If sales do suffer FUNimation should regret that they didn't wait. Don't do something if there's high risk involved and you don't do it right. Unlike DxD New BorN don't have extra scenes added to the DVD/BD making it "must buy". There are new shorts but considering FUNimation didn't even dub the shorts for season 1 (and still hasn't gotten the OVAs) there really isn't any incentive for the average fan to buy it, only collectors.

Who knows maybe they'll actually get Scott and Teri back somehow to redub this season. Might help attract some buyers if the only dub version with these VAs is on the DVD/Blu-ray. Probably unlikely but not completely impossible.

Yeah overall the dub for Born was a huge step down in quality, not that its bad but compared to how New sounded which was amazing, it's a really huge step down.

I think Josh Grelle did an admirable job as Issei taking over for Scott Freeman but Scott was just perfect as Issei and will surely be missed.

I think the audio quality was another issue. Like everyone sounded off to me especially at the beginning. I don't know how many dubs Cris George worked on prior to this but I think he was too much of a novice. Honestly if "C.T Anger" was too busy to direct. Jerry Jewell I feel should have taken over especially since he voiced Ajuka Beelzebub in the dub. As whenever Jewell directs a dub from someone else, that ends up sounding even better than whatever that came before him. Oh well..maybe if a fourth season does happen hopefully that does happen.

I still have to say the casting for the new characters was quite good like Mallorie Rodak as Rossweisse, John Burgmeier as Loki and Aaron Dismuke as Diodora, those were the definite standouts. Lydia McKay as Kuroka was a fitting choice despite being so radically different from the japanese version.

I think it didn't help the season was as solid as the first two in terms of pacing, a lot of that it blamed due to them mucking around with the order of events things unfolded in the original light novels. so it felt all over the place. I don't know what they were thinking and I'm hoping this didn't cost them the chance for a fourth season because from what i've heard The next couple of chapters are some of the best in the series.

@Autovolt

I haven't confirmed it myself yet but I've read that each Japanese Blu-ray volume of BorN (6 in total) apparently includes a one-shot manga chapter written by the original creator titled High School DxD EX

Basically where Issei's future children (he has several with each of the girls in his harem) travel back to the past with the help of Azazel, Ajuka and Gasper because the timeline is altered because of how things happened (incorrectly) in BorN.

Seems like it'll retcon most of BorN to fix things up nicely for a potential 4th anime season and get back on track with the light novels again. Basically pulling an X-Men: Days of Future Past.

If true I think it's hilarious because I don't recall any examples where this much effort was done for an anime's screw ups.

It is kind of a troll move to pull on anime-only viewers but even they should've sensed some things weren't quite right about how this season was made.

Just finished the finale. Even though Scott Freeman is and will always be acclaimed for his work as Issei (yes, he's Issei to me), I can tell that Josh Grelle had tried to do Issei justice for Scott (in which he had) and that I was able to grow even more on his performance.

Feel free to disagree with me, but I think that Cris George could've not gotten a better replacement for Scott as Issei. And yes, my heart goes out to Scott and I am devastated from his retirement. In my opinion, he would've been happy with what Josh had tried to do as Issei for him. But Scott will never be forgotten as Issei Hyodo. I hope his life will start to get better.

Anyway, way to go, Josh. Keep up the good work. And the whole cast (particlarly Jamie and Chloe) and staff was fantastic as well.

@BioZero216
He's alright but still below average IMO. Not trying to start a fight with anyone but I think some people (dub fans mostly) are too easily satisfied. Grelle's voiced several characters in other shows using his Issei voice before. Either fans have never watched those dubs or are too wimpy to be honest about their opinions and make a fair criticism.

The dub while still mostly enjoyable (primarily because of Jamie Marchi) isn't as good as past seasons though I will say I enjoyed some of the newcomers like Lydia Mackay as Kuroka, John Burgmeier as Loki and R Bruce Elliott as Odin. Quality of the show itself is lower too. Hopefully TNK will fix some of the animation issues for the Blu-rays but it feels like the overall budget for this season took a hit; makes you wonder if TNK thought this would be the final season (natural for sales to decline with each sequel for any franchise). DxD having 3 seasons especially for an ecchi property is very rare. Many fans will complain that there are no sequels to some of the overrated "masterpieces" they enjoy so DxD is definitely among a select group of profitable franchises. Among just ecchi franchises only the immortal Ikki Tousen and Queen's Blade have more seasons and the main reason they're profitable despite declining disc sales is because they sell a butt-load of $100 figurines targeting hardcore otaku and recoup costs and profit from this area of merchandise. A lot of fans were also upset about rearranging the adaptation order of the light novels, flying through some material at a lightning pace and ignoring other stories and then the final episodes being useless filler... If TPTB are going to do filler they should've been better or more creative at it like having nude Kuroka or Rossweisse; instead all fans got were a static eyecatcher (apparently there will be new mini-ovas with each Blu-ray volume so always still a chance for improvement I suppose).

Fact: Before the final 3 episodes DxD BorN had a rating of around 8.2 on MAL but is now sitting in the 7.8 range and will probably continue to drop. My guess is it'll ultimately settle around 7.5 A noticeable drop from DxD New's 8 and DxD season 1's 7.8

Back on topic concerning the dub the fact that FUNimation has had 3 different ADR Directors with this franchise shows they honesty don't care about consistency. It'd be a miracle if they brought back Scott Freeman and Teri Rogers to redub their characters for the DVD/Blu-ray but why would they spend extra money? They know majority of fans will still buy it. It sort of irked me in past seasons but as mentioned by others the dub script for this particular season (written by Tyson Rinehart and Josh Grelle AFAIK) tried WAY too hard to make it "hip" and "funny". The original script was already perfectly fine; shame the dub writers feel the need to validate their own sense of humor with lame jokes that are inconsistent and sometimes fall flat.

If Japanese fans aren't completely upset by this season and still plan to support it hopefully there will be a season 4. TNK said in a magazine interview (Megami magazine) that if they do make a season 4 they'll go back to canon material. Hopefully FUNimation steps up their game too and give a better overall dub like the first 2 seasons and actually has a permanent ADR Director who won't ditch to work on some other title.

Feel free to disagree with some or all that I said. Everyone has their own opinion and these were my thoughts.
BioZero216

@Mr_Ecchi_Man We all have out opinions, but saying dub fans are too easily satisfied or that they either haven't seen enough dubs or are too wimpy to express their opinion is a straight-up insult. I've seen a ton of Josh Grelle's work and I think he's an amazing VA. What does that make me? And to say Funi cares nothing for consistency is very disrespectful. Chris Sabat and Colleen Clinkenbeard were likely busy with other dubs that needed their attention. And personally, I think the dub script was hilarious and really added to the charm. And the reason they couldn't get Scott back was because he was going through very difficult times in his life. He lost his Wife, his house and his career. If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't be ready to work again anytime soon either. I don't know why Terri Rogers left, but I'm sure she had a good reason.

After seeing Episode 3, I am VERY happy with this dub. Josh Grelle is truly doing Scott Freeman justice, sounding both hilarious and very emotional. Kelly Angel's Akeno has also improved considerably since the first episode. I can also confirm that Aaron Roberts has reprised his role as Michael and that Loki is voiced by John Burgemeier as I hoped. I think Rossweise might be Morgan Garrett, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way, Cris George is proving himself to be a pretty solid director. Still, Scott Freeman and Terri Rogers are pretty much irreplaceable, IMHO.

@BioZero216 I agree that Josh Grelle is proving himself as Issei and Kelly Angel is improving as Akeno. However, I'm still not satisfied with many of the line deliveries and what sounds like forced "hip" talk, especially from Koneko. I didn't mind it in the first couple of seasons, but this season, it feels pretty forced. Not only that, but I think more of the lines, not just the hip talk, are delivered in a stale/unemotional level. It's probably because not only am I an actor, but I watch animated products so much, but I tend to pick up on whether or not deliveries seem natural to me. Hopefully the DVD releases will clean that issue up.

That being said, I am happy to see some new faces in the cast. I'm still racking my brain over who are voicing Tannin, Sairaorg and Rossweisse, but I think casting R. Bruce Elliott as Odin is genius, John Burgmeier as Loki is creative, and Kent Williams was a good choice for Barachiel. Even Lydia Mackay as Kuroka isn't a bad choice. I'm not sure how to feel about Aaron Dismuke as Diodora yet, but I think he could do well.

Glad to see that Phil Parsons is indeed, Azazel.

So I can confirm Phil is definitely Azazel. Lauren Landa MAY still be Xenovia despite my limited knowledge on her voice, but from what I've heard, it's likely her. Then again, can't be too sure considering she lives in LA.

@doodleboy It's definitely still her, the moments in the second episode, and the way she yells "HOLY SWORD DURANDAL" are identical.

What I want to know is if anyone knows who voices Sairaorg? His voice sounds ultra boss and I want more of it.

@Stelman257 My personal guess is Marcus D. Stimac; the voice sounds similar to Terasaka from "Assassination Classroom," whom he also voices.

After seeing the first episode, I must say that I am quite happy with Josh Grelle's Issei. He's an excellent VA and his impression of Scott Freeman is spot-on, but only time will tell if he can truly match Scott in terms of sheer emotion and rage. Josh has some massive shoes to fill in, but I have faith in him.

@BioZero216 He's okay, Josh Grelle is a great VA, but Scott Freeman was literally perfect as Issei. Plus Josh leans a little more on the thick goofy side (like Yuki Kaji) for Issei's voice and it's not nearly as good as the style Scott Freeman was going for.

But like you said, we'll see of course, definitely not writing Josh off straight away.

@Stelman257 I agree. Scott brought something to Issei that was very unique. He sounded funny, likable and goofy when he needed to, but during the emotional scenes, he just sounded bone-chilling. His gruff, but young sounding voice added so much to it. That performance alone made him one of my favorite Texas VA's.

@The Ear of One No idea. He's in another Funi simuldub as we speak, so that's probably not the case.

@BioZero216 no he's not. The character he was playing is a minor one that only appeared in the beginning of season two. Phil Parsons not reprising his role as Azazel is even more surprising, since he was cast in Tokyo Ghoul Root A simul dub and actually appeared a bit more recently.

@BioZero216 After episode 2 I'm pretty darn sure Lauren Landa and Phil Parson's are still definitely voicing Xenovia and Azazel. Their voices sound much more like they did in S2.

Remember the series has a different voice director, is under a slightly stricter time limit, and said voice director is also quite new to directing (though he has been an engineer for years so he's got experience), so after a years break from the series I'm not surprised some characters sounded a tad off in episode 1.

@BioZero216 Hahaha yeah, that's the same voice for sure. Didn't even need a second of dialogue to hear that one.

I also have some sad news. While Funi is indeed simuldubbing this, Scott Freeman and Terri Rogers will not be reprising their roles as Issie and Akeno. Instead, Issei will be voiced by Josh Grelle, and Akeno will be voiced by someone named Kelly Rogers. While I'm sure they'll both do great, I'm very sad to see both of their previous VA's go. Scott Freeman, especially. He was so amazing as Issei.

@BioZero216 @Ichigo341578926 @Fulgore2005

I just watched the first episode of the Born dub and Josh Grelle is a lot better as Issei than I was imagining but the voice change is still too jarring for my liking. He's playing the role well but Scott Freeman MADE Issei. I have no idea why Scott became unavailable and I really hope for what Ichigo has said happens. They need to get Scott back for when they do the home releases. I'm sorry Josh.

Akeno's new voice is alright, its a nice voice but again for me its too jarring of a replacement...it makes Akeno sound younger than what Teri Rogers had already done.

I also think Phil Parsons didn't come back as Azazel because something about his voice feels off. It sucks we don't have proper english credits right now to confirm.

I will say the dialogue is still hilarious as ever. The Tony Montana line was pretty funny.

@Autovolt The dub script was always very funny, but Scott Freeman made Issei's ebonic language and pervy moments priceless, and when he was enraged or emotional, Soctt belted out some truly bone-chilling screams of anger. He was born to play Issei and I have no idea why he didn't come back seeing as he is in Kamisama Kiss 2, another Funi simuldub. Still, Josh Grelle is probably the best replacement they could've gotten.

@Autovolt Also, do you think Lauren Landa returned as Xenovia? I can't really tell.
Stelman257
said at 8:51 AM on Sun May 3 2015
@BioZero216 Until anything is official confirmed we can only assume.

However I think Lauren Landa and Phil Parsons have definitely returned to play Xenovia and Azazel. For some reason they sound a little off compared to how they sounded in season 2, but when they yell or get long stretches of dialogue it's easy to tell. Lauren's Xenovia sounds a lot more like Lauren's normal voice rather than the deeper more mysterious tone she used in S2, and Phil Parsons isn't quite as deep as Azazel.

I would blame this on the directing or the nature of broadcast dubs honestly.

@Stelman257 It's possible.

Guys any guesses on who could be voicing Sairaorg Bael?

@BioZero216

If they did it would most likely be with censored video masters... As much as I like the voice acting of the dub I personally wouldn't mind waiting for an uncensored dub even if that means another year of waiting.

FUNimation has said that they'd go back and redub any changes for the DVD/Blu-ray release if there were any problems but we have yet to see any simuldub vs home video dub differences since none of their simuldub titles have been scheduled for a home video release yet.

And although a simldub for DxD BorN would have the benefit with majority of the cast being familiar with their characters already so being rushed wouldn't make a huge difference it's the ADR Direction I'm worried about. If Colleen Clinkenbeard returned (she didn't for DxD New) I'm kind of worried. The simldubs for Yona of the Dawn and The Rolling Girls have been very underwhelming. Chris Sabat can be a good ADR Director when he gives 100% but he has a bad habit of sometimes letting an Assistant ADR Director handle some of the work or letting experienced VAs direct their own performance (e.g. Dragon Ball Z games)

@Mr_Ecchi_Man is this about Monica getting a cast a lot in funi dubs abd you find her overrated?
Autovolt
said at 6:05 AM on Sun May 3 2015
@Mr_Ecchi_Man And you were right about being concerned for the simuldub.

DXD was one of FUNi's finest and funniest dubs they did so rushing this one wasn't a good idea especially if Scott Freeman our leading VA is unavailable at the moment they chose to dub this, I mean yes Josh Grelle is great at voicing MC's and dubbing over Yuki Kaji but Scott had this charm that only he could have brought.

Again I'm hoping they'll polish the dub for when it gets a proper home release in a year or so.

Also as for Colleen Clinkenbeard. I think she came back to direct DXD New. ANN says C.T Anger is an alias for her, why she would use an alias I have no idea considering she didn't have one in the first season?
MegaMike1990
said at 6:40 PM on Sun May 3 2015
@Autovolt Actually, C.T. Anger is Chris Sabat's alias. I found that out because C.T. Anger was used for "Wolfgang Regendorf" on "Dance in the Vampire Bund", and it listed Sabat. Also, next to Colleen Clinkenbeard's name on the the page for C.T. Anger is a red circle with the white small "i", which means either incorrect or invalid info.
