This is undoubtedly one of Funimation's worst dubs. I'm sorry. I tried to like it and enjoy it but it's just so bad in so many ways.
I think the reason it bugs me so much isn't because I like the show but because of how much I like every actor in it. You have so many talented people and you someone manage to miscast a majority of them. In the end the only four actors who were able to walk away with the pleasure of saying 'I fit my character and gave a good performance' where Johnny Yong Bosch, Jerry Jewell, Greg Ayres and J Michael Tatum.
Let's begin with Haru. Todd Haberkorn really wasn't a good fit for such a quiet reserved character who always returned to the water. Why did anyone think that getting the guy who voiced the Fire Dragon Slayer to do the guy who loved water was a good idea? And then there's Rin. While I'm not as angry as most fans were about him taking the role I really didn't think he fit such a cool character we were all supposed to be in awe of. All in all his voice was way to friendly. If anything Vic and Johnny should've swapped roles. And then you have Gou. Don't get me wrong I love Jamie Marchi. She's impressed me time and time again with her work on shows like Death Parade, Danganronpa and Highschool DxD but she was way to rough and sassy for a character that was meant to be enduring and sweet. I'd also like to call attention to Aiichiro. Josh Grelle sounded way to mature for the character which wouldn't have bothered me...if he was an actor that couldn't pull a soft voice off. But surprise he can! His Armin voice would've been perfect but NOPE Funimation had to make him go full Ginoza. Seriously FFS you have an actor who could've pulled a character off and made him use the wrong register.
Next up there's the script. Who wrote that mess anyways? The 'bro' and 'man' didn't bug me but when your audience is full of fujoshi's you need to make the guys as unrealistic and together as possible. 'Bro' makes them sound like friends which doesn't please the yaoi fangirls. Also there are way to many pop culture references. Dear god did the guys with the charts from the Nostalgia Critic write that thing? Basically Funimation could've just walked outside with a red hoodie, graphic t-shirt and baseball cap while holding a skateboard and said 'How do you do fellow kids?' and you'd get the same response.
So all in all just skip it. It's honestly not worth a watch and the sub just has better chemistry not to mention a decent script. The only good thing to come out of this was Vic Mignogna's cover of Splash Free which almost makes this worth it but not quite. Please just watch it in Japanese.

This dub was honestly disappointing. They managed to assemble an all-star cast, but barely any of them fit their roles (with the exception of Rin, Rei and Makoto)and the script was... not exactly the best thing in the world.

Oh. My. God. I freakin' LOVE Kisumi!!

I'm really hoping that Eric Vale is Kisumi! Ever since they said they were going to dub Free!, my money has been on Eric being Kisumi.

This dub is ummm... interesting, to say the least.

Like quality and acting wise, it's great! But the dialogue is... WOW.

@Regomania When you said, "WOW" about the dialogue, do you mean it's amazing or terrible?

Honestly, I'm loving the dub so far! The actors who I truly believe knocked it out of the park are Johnny Yong Bosch as Makoto, J. Michael Tatum as Rei, and Greg Ayres as Nagisa. Todd Haberkorn is decent as Haruka same for Vic Mignogna as Rin.

I guess my opinion might change about those two as this dub goes on. But so far, I'm loving it!

@Jessica Marra it's totally sweet that you're getting a kick out of it! personally, i don't think the dub is all that great, specifically on the dialogue. The qualitiy of the sound and the line deliverance is good, and the voice actors do a great job, but it's the dialogue that really is iffy in this dub. Maybe it might get better as it goes on, but currently with the 2 episodes realised, it's not that great.

Um...what about season 1? I can't find anything about it anywhere! Why would they dub the second season only?

I'm super excited about this dub. Talk about an all-star cast here! I totally called it for Rei to be voiced by Michael Tatum. He'll nail that character perfectly!

By the way, guys, this is the THIRD time Vic Mignogna is dubbing a character voiced by Mamoru Miyano. First Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club then Zero from Vampire Knight and now Rin Matsouka! Is this crazy or what?

I honestly think Greg Ayres will do okay as Nagisa. I can imagine his voice embody that character's personality.

I know Johnny Yong Bosch will do great as Makoto! He's my personal favorite character and I love him so much! JYB, u have my support!

There's no question that Todd Haberkorn will do fine as Haruka. The guy's a real professional and I love his work!

I'm hoping the dub will be out sometime this summer! it would be the perfect occasion for the show! I love this anime to death and it only gets better and better every time I watch it! XD

Do you think that they are going to keep all of the Australian voices the same when they dub it in English?

I'm loving this cast. And since Johnny and Vic are in this series I believe this means that they will appear in some funimation dubs next year

I like the English cast so far. I don't understand why some people are getting all annoyed over it. >X

@OneHellOfAButler I think because Vic is playing Rin and everyone treats Vic like a homophobic jerk for some reason

@DemonPrincessMitsu He tweeted that he didn't think Fai from Tsubasa Resorvoir Chronicles was gay. I personally don't see the problem with that, though. All the sexualities of CLAMP characters are up to the viewer.

I am still highly unprepared for the justice that an English dub will NOT bring to the series.

My opinion: Watch a sports anime with English subs only.
said at 10:19 AM on Wed Nov 12 2014
@Cat_Z I might watch it in dub since I haven't watched in sub so I going to see how will it be since I not big fan of anime sports but I give it a shot

So they released dub actors this early?
said at 10:03 PM on Sun Oct 19 2014
@spider-batmanx12 Oh nononono!

There's a set of episodes where Rin and Haru go to australia. Those actors are actually australians used for a very real effect. Even Rin's VA speaks english!

Regomania is correct. However FWIW Funimation is planning to announce an English cast soon for Eternal Summer (season 2) even though they won't actually be releasing that season on home video for at least a year.

For anyone who doesn't know, Crunchyroll (an anime streaming service) somehow acquired the home video rights for season 1 (Iwatobi Swim Club). Funimation and Crunchyroll are rivals so the chances of them working together aren't looking good.

Funimation wants to dub season 1 but it's ultimately Crunchyroll's decision so Funimation is putting pressure on them by announcing an English cast prematurely. If Crunchyroll doesn't do a dub (or was thinking of an LA cast) then fans can be angry with Crunchyroll instead of Funimation if dubs for both seasons aren't the same.

How will things work out?

1. Crunchyroll uses Funimation's English cast of Eternal Summer (season 2) to dub Iwatobi Swim Club (season 1) but they have the rights to stream the dub first on their website for X amount of months before Funimation can release it on DVD/BD

2. Japanese company forces Crunchyroll to transfer ownership of rights to Funimation

3. Crunchyroll does nothing and waits for rights for expire (which will take a few years) and THEN Funimation can license season 1 themselves, dub it and then release it on home video.

4. Crunchyroll ignores Funimation completely and uses Okratron5000 (Chris Sabat's studio) to dub Iwatobi Swim Club; which would be fine since 90% of Okratron's talent pool are FUNi VAs and assembling the FUNi English cast of Eternal Summer shouldn't be a problem. Then Crunchyroll uses another company to distribute the DVD/BD for them like Shout! Factory or rightstuf

(this is probably the longest post I've ever written lol)
