In all honestly this is probably one of my favorite Funimation dubs. In fact it's one of the few dubs that I feel doesn't have any issues (aside from the Titan screams). Some of my favorite performances came from David Matranga, Lauren Landa, Matthew Mercer, Mike McFarland, Bryn Appill, Ashly Burch, Elizabeth Maxwell, Trina Nishmura, Robert McCollum, Josh Grelle and Bryce Papenbrook. Dear god. I dare anyone to claim that Bryce is overrated or send me a death threat for suggesting him for a popular character after listening to his performance in S2 episode 12. Granted Eren isn't my favorite performance of his (that honor goes to a certain creep with a hope fetish) but it definitely comes close. And when it comes to the other two leads then nothing could've been more spot on. Nishmura handles Mikasa's emotional and yandere moments beautifully and Josh Grelle does a great job with Armin's development from a wimp to a brave hero and his scream is fantastic. Now time to wait for the next season. Dear god between this Steins Gates 0, the P5 animation and the very hinted at FE3 remake I don't think I can wait.

The English actors really went above and beyond for the second season of Attack on Titan. Stand out performances Elizabeth Maxwell as Ymir, Bryn Apprill as Krista, Bryce Papenbrook as Eren, David Matranga as Bertolt, Robert McCollum as Reiner.

My guess for the Beast Titan is that it's Jason Liebrecht and they're using a voice modifier. I know that seems far-fetched but I have my reasons for this prediction but if I explained those reasons we'd be getting into spoiler territory.

Wonder who's directing the LA half of this. Kirbopher mentioned the sound engineer in his recent Zesteria the X Kirblog.
said at 11:24 PM on Sat Apr 29 2017
@huzaifa_ahmed The English credits on the first dub ep of S2 haven't credited anyone else for director but that may change in the future eps to come.

I am curious as to where the LA recording for this season is at, I assume it would've been something like the Junior High dub where Todd Haberkorn co-directs using his own personal studio (creatively named The Habertat).

But the mention of that info in Kirbopher's blog and him namedropping the studio (Central Command Studios) where they did the Zestiria anime dub could suggest it's being done there instead. Which actually might be it since one of the new cast additions to this season is Jason C. Miller who owns Central Command Studios.

@JRPictures What I wanna know is who is voicing Beast Titan? Mike McFarland is saying NDA as to why he can't reveal it. I wonder if it's a union issue, or they are just waiting for a big reveal.

@darknessflamegeass well i would actually be suprised if its james marsters props to huzaifa_ahmed now what does marsters have to do with this well basically he will voice zamasu in DBS or atleast going by the hint given by cliford chapin i cant see why mcfarland would burrow him from sabat for a few episodes.

@Abdullab Maybe. Though the voice sounds closer to Bob Carter, and Rick Robertson.
said at 4:36 PM on Sun Apr 30 2017
@darknessflamegeass @JRPictures The actor voicing the Beast Titan I believe is Rick Robertson. Guy definitely could use more roles. His voice is amazing.
said at 5:58 AM on Tue May 2 2017
@huzaifa_ahmed I think the LA cast just flew to Dallas for this or are recording through Skype. The vast majority of the cast are Dallas regulars, so I don't think they're using two separate studios for this.

The Attack on Titan Season 2 dub is off to a great start!

I really like how the Beast Titan sounds. Too bad Mike McFarland's not allowed to say who plays him. Union actor, maybe?
said at 6:56 AM on Sun Apr 23 2017
@Raebo I also wonder on that possibility. But the only thing that sucks is I am able to hear who voices who in any anime dubbed by FUNimation on most occasions, but I can't seem to figure out who voices the Beast Titan. I just can't figure it out myself!
said at 7:04 AM on Sun Apr 23 2017
@Raebo Also it might be one of the additional cast members.
The additional cast members were:
Cris George
David Wald
Madeleine Morris
Oscar Contreras
Tyler Walker
Tyson Rinehart
Justin Briner
Christopher Wehkamp
Felecia Angelle
Phil Parsons
Zach Bolton
Aaron Roberts

This dub had the potential to be one of the best but ended up only being slightly above average (sub: 8.5/10, dub: 7.5/10) When season 2 is eventually dubbed I hope it's a major improvement. Mike McFarland's ADR directing is on a slow decline but it's not that surprising when he relies heavily on new flavour of the year talent and veterans he worked with on past shows.
said at 2:31 AM on Sat Jan 10 2015
@lazydude500 Many English dubs of 2014 were average fare when it came to voice direction and casting but Attack on Titan wasn't one of those run of the mill dubs whatsoever. Mike's casting for his dubs have always been very precise like a calculated move in chess. Look at any english dub cast from last year you would be hard pressed to find a more impressive and unique slate of actors & actresses for a dubbing production. The Attack on Titan and Hal dubs was a return to form for Mike when it came to voice directing. I find your complaint about him using new talent and veteran talent to be illogical considering what other options would he have when it came to casting for an English dub? When those options are always the same for any ADR Director when it comes to casting for dubs in general. Mike went out of his way to cast veteran actors that are rarely seen in current dubs like Linda Young, Ed Blaylock, Brett Weaver, Brad Jackson, Kenny Green and Jonathan C. Osborne. Which you won't see many of current line up of ADR Directors at Funimation doing in general. Is every dub that Mike directs out of the park impressive? No not always but No ADR Director in this business consistently delivers remarkable dub after remarkable dub every one will put out average fare at times that is simply inevitable. When Mike gets it right with casting and voice direction he creates an elite dubbing product that usually stands above a majority of his colleague's current work. He's proven time and time again over the last decade that he is among the best in this business for an obvious reason when it comes to voice direction and casting. Who else is willing to reach out for voice talent from all over the nation for a very specific role in this business? Very few are willing to and very few succeed in spades like Mike manages to a majority of the time. The only other dub cast of 2014 that I found to be as unique and diverse as the Attack on Titan cast was the A Certain Magical Index II cast that was put together by Jerry Jewell. The Attack on Titan dub succeeded where very few dubs of last year could it kept me engaged with its raw emotive direction and nice mixture of promising new voice talent like Francis Henry & Chris Hury. I can understand that it didn't meet your high expectations which is fine plenty of casting and dubs of last year didn't meet mine either but in my opinion the Attack on Titan dub was one of few lone examples of last year that met that high demand for a success when it came to creating a finely crafted dubbing product that will have a vast staying power for many years to come.
said at 11:35 AM on Sat Jan 10 2015
@IAMTHEVASTUNIVERSE I might not be the biggest fan of Attack on Titan but you are right there was so much variety in the cast for the dub.

So many out of towners like Bryce Papenbrook, Matthew Mercer, Lauren Landa, Jessica Calvello, Rachel Robinson and a bit of brand new talent like Elizabeth Maxwell, Byrn Apprill, Clifford Chapin and as you mentioned both Francis Henry & Chris Hury.

That being said I wasn't that impressed with the show or dub but I understood why this dub was so high profile, I hope we get more all-star dub casts more often.

@IAMTHEVASTUNIVERSE Kill La Kill's dub was much better in every objective category.
said at 10:38 AM on Sat Nov 26 2016
@AntiSabat666 Kill la Kill's dub was fantastic and its scripts were definitely better handled than Attack on Titan's scripts, but I disagree with it being "better in every objective category", because I felt that the performances themselves were just as strong.

What was so remarkable about this series?
said at 7:39 AM on Mon Sep 22 2014
I guess most people are looking for a rush and something that has a Walking Dead feel to it.

Personally I think it's a pretty good show but it does have flaws. It's not as good when you rewatch it multiple times which gives the dub a bit of a disadvantage (unless you never watched it in Japanese) but even the dub has a few questionable casting choices and performances so anyone who thinks it's the best dub ever is full of BS. Of course the Japanese version is no masterpiece either; e.g. tons of fans hate Yuki Kaji with a passion (in any anime).

Or maybe mainstream anime fans were just looking for the next big thing and latched on to this. The year before it was Sword Art Online which IMO is an actually mediocre anime yet many people will say it's the greatest anime ever...

Does Levi have a deep voice in Japanese, too, or is it just in the dub version? He looks quite youthful and I didn't expect that voice coming out of him. So is he supposed to be a young guy with an unexpected deep voice or does he just look younger than he is?

I'm in no way basing the dub if anyone should think that. It's just kinda odd hearing that voice from someone who looks like that.
said at 2:23 AM on Fri Aug 8 2014

Yeah, it's supposed to be deep in both languages. Levi's actually in his mid 30s, despite how tiny he looks.

@Polyester Funk Most people have a voice pretty similar to their lifelong voice, in their early 20's.

Clancy Brown has more-or-less always sounded like that.

Zach Aguilar is pretty deep, despite being only 18 years old.

Is funimation intentionally not giving us the voice actor for Mike Zacharius? He is the only other big role that is not given to us and instead we are told a bunch of nobodies that die or go unseen after one to two episodes.

Been watching it on Toonami and I'm impressed so far, love the story and (most) of the characters.
Two things that slightly bother:
The art style, I don't know what it is but it doesn't sit right with me. Might be the outlines look a little too thick at time.

The main character, Eren, isn't as interesting as the other characters. I guess I've just seen this type of character so much and I've just gotten bored of it. I don't hate him but I can see him do something to annoy me. Would have rather the sister was the main character or even Armin be the star.

@Girlygeek43 i hate to be one of those people but if you watched the subs i think you would agree.
i agree she does tend to sound a lil young but my biggest problem is that her voice seems too lively for Mikasa. Mikasa is supposed to be a quite reserved girl who seems to only openly show emotion when it comes to Eren or Armin. So i guess I personally feel she should be played as something more like how Michelle Ruff tried to play Nagato in The-Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

@akersaotome The english dubs for the Miyazaki movies, Marvel, IGPX, Afro Samurai and the only other animes with John Dimaggio in them seem to do that well.
said at 7:53 PM on Tue Oct 4 2016
@Troodon2 *Ghibli movies, many are directed not by Miyazaki himself, but his fellow directors. I get what you mean though.

In the case of IGPX, Afro Samurai, Animatrix, & perhaps Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, they were American co-productions, so the Hollywood TV networks (& theaters) funded them.

Animatrix & VHD Bloodlust were done *in ENglish* first, & Afro Samurai in particular has no Japanese dub.

* Studio Ghibli had a deal with Disney, who really respects their work. So they give them a pretty damn good budget for a dub (in the style of their own, celebrity-studded features, versus IGPX with cartoon VA's)

It more-or-less depends on the size of the company that licenses the show, & how involved both the Japanese company as well as TV networks are, in promoting them outside Japan.

For the most part, Japanese anime companies stick to themselves, so while they're willing to take our money...they aren't necessarily interested in *spending* any money here.

* I have always found it interesting that foreign licensing generates the most $ for anime, yet at the same time, foreign-dubs are treated like trash (IMO).

Even though Funimation hasn't confirmed home video rights yet it's probably a safe bet they will dub Dangan Ronpa: The Animation. Assuming they dub it in-house instead of outsource it to Bang Zoom (Funimation has never worked with Bang Zoom for reprisals) it was probably good timing. Bryce gets to work on 2 shows while in Dallas. Makes the trip worthwhile instead of losing money on traveling expenses.

I may be the odd one out for this but I personally think Chris Patton can pull off a decent Eren as well as Micah Solusod or JYB. I was listening to him in Gantz and Black Cat and it made me remember his role in Baccano as Graham all of which he displays masterful talent in voicing passionately angry characters without it becoming nonsensical yelling all the while still sounding youthful.

Unless the situation has changed recently I don't think you'll ever hear Chris Patton in a FUNimation dub again. A while back when Funimation and ADV were suing each other he made his disgust publicly known on twitter; possibly blacklisted and even if he wasn't most likely has no desire to work for Funimation again.

It's great to see Lauren Landa book another high-profile title. I've come to really enjoy her voice acting, and I look forward to hearing her here.

I'm hoping for Aaron Dismuke as Eren, but you really never know. I wouldn't dislike Greg Ayres voicing him, but that would sound a bit cartoonish IMO.
said at 9:44 AM on Sat Mar 15 2014
@PurpleWarrior13 Greg is too scratchy IMO, and remember, Eren shouts a ton so I don't think a scratchy voice like that could be too fitting.

Wait a minute...if they are bringing in some Aniplex VAs for this dub...that's means...BRYCE PAPENBROOK MAY BE EREN!!
said at 10:44 AM on Fri Mar 14 2014
Aniplex would have to have their own studio for this to be accurate and they don't. They use Bang Zoom for all dubs they've done so far and in California almost all VAs work for multiple studios.

I can't help but get the feeling Eren will be a newcomer.
said at 10:37 AM on Fri Mar 14 2014
You know, at that point you may actually be right.
There are quite a few out-of-town actors as well as many newcomers already.

But I still think McFarland will play it safe and cast someone who's already popular.

@LeDom maybe it'll be Jason liebrecht. But if its Bryce then I hope he does well

@spider-batmanx12 I will be fine with whoever is Eren just as long as it isn't Vic or Todd they are good but seriously don't fit.
said at 11:49 AM on Fri Mar 14 2014
@Spiralpower1620 maybe it'll be the guy who does alibaba from magi and the fat kid from accel world. He's a totally better choice than Bryce. Bryce is a good actor but doesn't show as much strength in emotion. But that's simplely the fault of the director.
said at 12:50 PM on Fri Mar 14 2014

I also doubt it would be Bryce Papenbrook. I know Papenbrook had a tremendous 2013 with Sword Art Online, amassed convention appearances and hurt his tonsils for Call of Duty:Ghosts. Unless Mike McFarland managed to reach out to him through a recommendation or a meeting at a convention, I don't believe it will be Bryce Papenbrook.

Its not just the director who approves on how a script line is delivered but also the people in suits (in this case Japanese representatives of the I.P) and their approval too.

Trina Nishimura! YES! I also had a strong feeling she might get cast as Mikasa, and I was strongly hoping for her to get the part! :D Even though some people might say something a bit pessimistic like, "Oh look, Mike McFarland reused one of his favorites, how predictable" or something along those lines, from what I've seen of Trina's work so far, an emotionally reserved, hard-edged (but still feminine), and sometimes somber character like Mikasa is a bit different than the characters she's played before. And I'm sure it will be a great chance for her to further explore her range as an actress, and I bet she'll do a great job. I'm really excited to see who plays Armin and Eren!

So far, the show seems to have a lot of newcomers. Then again, most of the characters with a confirmed VA are pretty minor, and it's only the second day.

As far as I know, Mike McFarland plays it safe when it comes to the main characters, but we'll have to wait a while for this because it's obvious Funimation is keeping Eren, Armin, Mikasa and Levi for last.

Hell I'm actually surprised Erwin's VA (yay for Tatum btw) was confirmed on the first day.

I'm terrified at this point that Vic or Todd will be cast as Eren.
They're both so talented, but they're just too easy. Todd has been so many main characters in recent history. It's honestly annoying hearing the same voice for so many main characters.
And Vic, while talented, is just too easy. I'd like to hear something a little different. With a little more darkness to the character, rather than "He looks young, so just slap him with a higher voice."
said at 5:09 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
I'm hoping it would be someone like Micah Solusod or Josh Grelle. Both have a fitting voice and need more love.
said at 5:17 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014

said at 5:23 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014

I mean he's good, but his voice triggers that "Okay, this is annoying" switch for me.
said at 5:25 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
@LeDom Micah is actually my ideal casting choice for Eren.
Would be great to hear him in more stuff.
I've seen Josh Grelle's name tossed around a lot, and honestly the only thing I've seen him in is Kaze No Stigma, in which he sounds pretty whimpy, so I can't really be much of a judge on how he'd do as Eren. I'll just have to take everybody's word for it and see what Funimation's decision is.
said at 5:27 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
@RenoRebirth guys please we all know that Bryce Papenbrook can do an amazing Eren
said at 5:28 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
Heh, I see what you mean about Ayres, talented though he be. I wish Papenbrook would do Eren, but ah well.
said at 5:32 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
@FUNiman I've only heard him in one thing as well, Sword Art Online, but even then I haven't even seen much of it, so can't really judge that either.
In all honesty, I am not as blown away by AoT as I should be, but with the right English cast, I might finally cave and watch it all.
said at 5:38 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
To be honest, I DESPISE AoT, even with the stellar voicework of the sub version, but I'm always interested in a Mike McFarland dub and I'm curious to see how he handles it. If you want a good voice sample of Papenbrook go to the BTVA 2013 Awards and listen to Rin's voice clip, I think that kind of voice would be magnificent for the rage filled Eren.
said at 5:43 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
@FUNiman I feel like Attack on Titan's biggest draw back is it's pacing issues.
I'm trying to watch it for the action and story, but what I get is "Let's just scream at each other incoherently for 15 minutes straight."
And when people say the characters are really well developed, I don't get that at all.
I'm thirteen episodes in, and I honestly couldn't care less about most of these people.
But like I said, I might give it another chance if the dub cast is solid, which so far, seems like it is.
said at 8:50 AM on Wed Mar 12 2014
Now that I notice, Greg Ayres never got a major role in shows directed by Mike McFarland meaning that, if he gets in, he'll probably only be a minor character.

I find him talented, but his voice gets a bit grating.
said at 3:17 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
Wow, I don't recognize most of the English VAs they have announced for this show, they're really busting out the new people. I'm sure McFarland will deliver on this dub, he may not change the face of the dubbing world with every show he directs and may not use the most innovative cast choices all that much (cmon Mike I love Colleen Clinkenbeard but other VAs exist too) but he always utilizes his dubbing casts magnificently, that's why he is my favorite voice director.
said at 12:50 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014

Hardly surprising to see Jamie march getting a role on this show.
said at 11:30 AM on Tue Mar 11 2014
Jamie is one of FUNi's best voice actress so I suppose it's expected she'd be in most FUNi dubs. However I'm actually a bit surprised... Others have said it and I'll repeat it. McFarland likes to reuse a lot of the same people (especially women) he worked with on past projects who had BIG roles for BIG roles in newer projects. Jamie Marchi has never had a BIG role in a Mike McFarland dub so I'm not sure if I'm suppose to be "happy" or "grateful" that she got cast here (better a minor character than not at all I guess?) Only theory for I can think of for why he's the only ADR Director at FUNi who takes Jamie Marchi for granted is MAYBE he's saving an actual BIG role for her in the future (Boa Hancock in One Piece?) and doesn't want to overuse Jamie in BIG roles in projects until that day. I think Mike McFarland is a great voice director but his casting decisions can give me headaches sometimes. VARIETY for BIG roles please! VARIETY! Don't be afraid! :)

Attack on Titan at least has some variety for some of the more notable characters. So I appreciate that (about time)

You know I wouldn't mind seeing McFarland directing the dub for a mediocre anime and see if he can do well there too. I'm sure many supporters would say something like "blah blah blah his talents are better used for better titles" but I think it'd be a good challenge for him. He always seems to get top priority for any mainstream type show (e.g. Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece) or a critically acclaimed anime film (e.g. Wolf Children, Summer Wars).

When you have a really good title, it's pretty difficult to give it a BAD dub (it can happen sometimes but rarely happens). Give McFarland a mediocre title and his free ride comes to an end. He won't be able to reuse all his favorite VAs because they may not be the right fit for character types he's not used to casting for.

P.S. Based on the Anime Boston guest list there's a 99.999% chance that Josh Grelle will be Eren and Trina Nishimura will be Mikasa.

*gasp* Trina had big roles in Fulmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Evangelion movies. SO SURPRISED!!! OMG!!! :P

Sarcasm aside... I think she'll be great even if the casting choice was expected. :)
said at 1:57 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
@lazydude500 Very true. I too think she's a great actress.
said at 2:55 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
I agree with a lot of the points you said however it is worth noting that there actually aren't that many female characters in this show. Probably some minor roles missing but at the moment I only count 14 female characters on this page. Majority of them being minor roles. Mega hit anime like this probably had hundreds of actresses auditioning; even if it was just for bit parts). The fact that Jamie Marchi got cast against those odds is pretty impressive (means she was that much better than most). Would it have been better if she got a bigger role? Of course! Even if McFarland had specific people in mind for larger roles (favoritism from past projects, which would exclude Jamie), sometimes the small victories are worth it in situations like that.
I do think it's amusing that he cast himself as Jean though (and screwed over a possibly more talented and deserving actor)... Guess he couldn't resist the temptation to give himself a big role for the most anticipated English dub of 2014... :)
said at 5:19 PM on Tue Mar 11 2014
There's always the possibility of her being casted as more than one character! But yeah, I also believe he might be saving her for a major character in One Piece.

Oppai: what I found funny about this is the fact that this is the second time he voices a guy named Jean =P

Watching this show made me grow chest hair so thick that my electric clippers broke while trying to trim it. Seriously though, this is the first anime series I think I've watched all the way through in a well over a year, and it was among the most addicting and action packed things I've ever watched. I am now officially a fan of this show.

If you're like me, you may have taken one look at this and it's exploding popularity and thought "There's no way in heck this lives up to all the hype.", but let me just say that this is one show you desperately NEED to check out. It was like watching a mixture of Gurren Lagann, Shadow of the Colossus, and Evangelion... except on steroids... and crack... and the testosterone of a thousand bulls.

And on another note, I'm really, REALLY anxious to see what Funimation comes up with on the dub cast. I have a feeling this is a dub they will bring their A-game to.

@PsychicVoiceSpy Excuse me, I'm excited to know the dub cast, not anxious.

Eren Jaeger (-------)

Mikasa Ackerman (Colleen Clinkenbeard or Laura Bailey)

Armin Arlet (Luci Christian)

Jean Kirchstein (Troy Baker or Robert McCollum)

Reiner Braun (Patrick Seitz or Travis Willingham)

Krista Lenz/Historia Reiss (Cherami Leigh)

Annie Leonhart (Trina Nishimura)

Bertolt Hoover (Eric Vale; Justin Cook; Vic Mignogna)

Ymir (Monica Rial)

Zoe Hange (Jamie Marchi; Caitlin Glass)

Levi (Todd Haberkorn or Jason Liebrecht)

Erwin Smith (Chris Sabat)

Hannes (Kyle Hebert or Phil Parsons)

Dot Pixis (R. Bruce Elliot)

Thomas Wagner (Chris Sabat or Ian Sinclair)

Marco (Eric Vale or Scott Freeman)

I really only picked voices for the characters that are seen almost the whole way through the show.

I'm not sure about Eren or Conny yet.

It would be nice to see Sam Riegal, Troy Baker, and Johnny Yong Bosch do some work for this too.

@Cat_Z josh grelle would be perfect for eren. but, chris sabat wouldn't even fit for someone like thomas. i say hannez would best fit for chris and erwin smith for j michael tatum

@spider-batmanx12 Definitely Brina for Mikasa.

My friend and I before we even saw this TOTALLY set Jason Liebrecht as Levi! I was thinking Chris Sabat for Pixis.

@SpawnofSpock I was thinking of ed blaylock voicing the guy and chris sabat voicing hannes

@spider-batmanx12 This might be typecasting a bit but...I just have to say it, Jamieson Price as Dot Pixis please!
said at 4:55 PM on Thu Nov 21 2013
@Metabad pixis just screams king Bradley to me. but if mike McFarland hires jameison price for one piece or other stuff, you can bet your sweet ass. I just hope jameison price isn't married because there might be a problem

@SpawnofSpock I disagree, she's been used for so many uncountable lead roles that she needs to let someone else be the lead. I prefer Trina Nishimura as Mikasa, she's heavily underrated as an actress and her talent is wasted on background characters most of the time.
