Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Final Direct

Nintendo held the final pre-launch video presentation for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the centrepiece of this holiday's Nintendo Switch lineup, yesterday morning.

The final two characters in the main game were confirmed: Street Fighter's Ken, appearing as an Echo Fighter of Ryu - only fitting, since Ken is the original fighting game clone - and Pokemon Sun and Moon's Incineroar, a Fire/Dark wrestler voiced posthumously by Unsho Ishizuka. But the show's not over just yet - SSB Ultimate will be supported with at least one year's worth of DLC, estimated to last until February 2020. The game's season pass will include 5 all-new fighters, each packed with a new stage and new music tracks.

As a special bonus, players who register the game to their MyNintendo account before the end of January will get to play as a special Piranha Plant fighter for free starting this February. Players who buy the game afterward can buy Piranha Plant separately, and it is not counted as one of the five season pass newcomers. Anyone who buys the season pass will also receive a Mii Costume based on Rex, the main character of last year's Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

A language toggle was also confirmed for the game, so players can enjoy a multitude of different language voices for certain characters.

Director Sakurai ended the presentation by revealing the cinematic trailer for the game's Adventure Mode: World of Light. The trailer is viewable below in both English and Japanese.

The game's final newcomer count is as follows:

  • Inkling (Splatoon)

  • Princess Daisy (Super Mario Land)

  • Ridley (Metroid)

  • Simon Belmont (Castlevania)

  • Richter Belmont (Castlevania: Rondo of Blood)

  • Chrom (Fire Emblem: Awakening)

  • Dark Samus (Metroid Prime 2)

  • King K. Rool (Donkey Kong Country)

  • Isabelle (Animal Crossing: New Leaf)

  • Ken (Street Fighter)

  • Incineroar (Pokemon Sun and Moon)

After missing out on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, the following characters return from Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl.

  • Ice Climbers (Ice Climber)

  • Young Link (The Legend of Zelda)

  • Pichu (Pokemon Gold and Silver)

  • Pokemon Trainer, Squirtle, and Ivysaur (Pokemon Red and Green)

  • Solid Snake (Metal Gear)

  • Wolf O'Donnell (Star Fox 64)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate promises to be the biggest Smash Bros. game ever, and the culmination of the series to this point, boasting every single playable who has ever appeared in the games, and over 100 stages spanning decades of video game history. The game launches for Nintendo Switch worldwide on December 7, 2018.
