Possible Spin-Offs And More Movies For The SimpsonsReported on Saturday, August 24th 2019
With Disney's acquisition of Fox, The Simpsons now reside within the House of Mouse. What that means for Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and the entirety of Springfield's residents was briefly teased during the show's panel at D23 Expo, along with the status of the Kwik-E Mart owner Apu (following last year's cultural controversy).
Rumors of a second Simpson movie have been around for years, and it was again touched upon from executive producer Al Jean, along with the possibility of spin-off series for side characters.
"I think Disney would be supportive of anything we wanted to do, maybe a crazy limited series with a side character or a movie that we surprised you with, they’ve been really creatively supportive and this is going to afford so many new ways to do the show than just the traditional format."
As for Apu's fate (voiced by Hank Azaria), Simpsons creator Matt Groening said "Yes. We love Apu. We're proud of Apu."
Jean added "Some people are offended by the character and I take that very seriously,” he said last year. “Others really love the character. It’s a difficult choice. I don’t want to offend people but we also want to be funny. We don’t want to be totally politically correct. That has never been us. It’s given us a lot of thought."
With Disney+ sticking to Disney's family friendly nature of content, it is unknown whether this will affect the writing for future episodes of the show, despite the streaming service touted as serving content up to PG-13.
In the meantime, all 30 seasons of The Simpsons will be available to stream on demand when Disney+ launches on November 12th, 2019.
