At long last, Square Enix announced today that the Dissidia Final Fantasy arcade game, which first hit Japan late in 2015, will make its worldwide debut on home consoles.
Titled Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, it is the third entry in the Dissidia series of arena fighting games. The original game was released for the PSP back in 2008 as a belated celebration of the series's 20th anniversary, so NT's arrival marks nearly 10 years since then.
The arcade roster was a bit thin at launch, only focusing on the essentials - the fourteen protagonists of the fourteen numbered FF games released up to that point. It has since received a healthy amount of post-launch support, with fan favourite villains and supporting characters such as Sephiroth, Kain Highwind, and Kefka joining the fray. For the first time in the series, characters from spinoff games appear as well, such as Ramza and Ace from Final Fantasy Tactics and Type-0.
When Dissidia NT releases on PS4, it will possess the complete roster of the arcade version up to that point, with more characters to be revealed monthly starting in August. Noctis, the protagonist of recently-released Final Fantasy XV, is expected to be among them. The game will also feature story content penned by Kazushige Nojima, one of the series's most veteran writers, and is planned to receive an extensive amount of post-launch DLC - Square Enix's end goal is to feature over 50 characters from across the entire franchise.
