So I decided to sit down and watch this. And it was really REALLY good. The animation was pleasant, the storyline was enduring and it had some really strong characters. My one complaint was that I found it in the Walmart five dollar bin alongside the live action Cat in the Hat.

I re-watched The Iron Giant today for the first time years and it's definitely still one of my favourite animated movies from the 90's.

It really captures the 50's feel they were going for, from the setting, to the atmosphere and even the geopolitical climate of the time, brilliantly setting itself after the Russians launched Sputnik.

I find it quiet fascinating Vin Diesel voiced The Iron Giant in one of his earliest acting roles and much like Groot, who he would portray a decade and a half later. Really conveys so much emotion in his performance despite his very limited dialogue.

The whole cast does an amazing job here, I think one of the other major highlights is Christopher McDonald as Kent Mansley. Kent is such a despicable character but yet Christopher makes him so entertaining.

Shame we never got that sequel involving the Iron Giant fighting against other Giants from his race because it bombed at the time, even if it got a sequel. I doubt we would see it being as beautifully hand drawn as it was in the 90's since CGI is the go to animation style for most movies.

Still this movie has a lot of heart, wonder, is gorgeous to look at and feels very down to earth. A lot of great qualities that made this a cult classic now appreciated by much more.

I also find it amusing in the Japanese dub has Bask Om as The Iron Giant, Jerid Messa as Dean and Yazan Gable as Kent Mansley.

It's a mini Zeta Gundam reunion.

One of the classic animated films of 90s with a great story and of course Vin diesel as the lovable Iron Giant I honestly wouldn't mind if they made a sequel right now because that how much I love this film

THE IRON GIANT was hailed as one of the best animated films of 1999, although that year was a rather strong one for animated movies in general: Disney had TARZAN, Pixar had TOY STORY 2, and of course Ghibli debuted PRINCESS MONONOKE in America. THE IRON GIANT broke new ground because for the first time it showed that a Western animated film didn't need to emulate the Disney formula to stand out. This was a problem that plagued WB's previous animated attempts QUEST FOR CAMELOT, and the even worse KING AND I, but IRON GIANT succeeds because it attempts its own style, and provides just the right amount of heart, humor, suspense, and emotional pathos.

So why didn't THE IRON GIANT become the breakout box office hit it should have been?

Despite enthusiastic reviews from critics, Warner Bros., simply put, mismarketed and mishandled the movie, and consequently, very few people came to see it. The resulting box office failure of the film put Warner Bros. Animation's career on ice, an undeserving fate for a masterfully realized, powerfully rendered film.

Luckily, Brad Bird's directorial debut has won over legions of fans over the years, allowing the sting of its theatrical debut to tinge off. Oddly, the film even plays better than a lot of the recent latter-day Disney features (especially their CGI output), perhaps because of its willingness to be different and daring.

@PurpleWarrior13 I love this movie but is it really worth calling it the most underrated animated movie of all time at this point?

Everyone pretty much loves this movie and if anything the movie has gained more and more popularity over the years.

@Autovolt I'd say "underrated" is an accurate term for when the movie was FIRST released. I mean, jeez, back in 1996 this movie was essentially on par with any of Pixar's best efforts, but failed to be met with the same response. It was only years after its release that more and more started to realize the quality of the movie.

So yeah, underrated back in the day for sure. But these days? It's become a fan-favourite hit. :D

I occasionally re-watch certain scenes of this on Youtube. And then I promptly proceed to wipe my eyes because they get watery.

But they're mutually exclusive events, I assure you.
