"The Phantom Menace" has been derided by many as the nadir of the "Star Wars" franchise, but to me, "Attack of the Clones" is. The biggest problem I have with the movie, as many people do, is with the love story between Anakin and Padme. Neither Haydn Christensen or Natalie Portman portray their characters convincingly and there's hardly any chemistry between the two of them. The dialogue they're saddled with doesn't help either. Much of that can be attributed to George Lucas; neither actor is to blame, Lucas is more skilled at providing visuals than he is at directing actors and, regrettably, at writing mutual dialogue. Seriously, nobody would go around saying "I'm so in love with you" or "I truly, deeply love you!"

As detrimental as the love story is, "Attack of the Clones" has its plusses; Ewan McGregor continues to do a fine job as Obi-Wan, as does Ian McDiarmid and Frank Oz as well as Anthony Daniels in their respective roles, and Christopher Lee, although underused, is a nice new addition to the cast. But of course the real showpiece is the fight between Yoda and Count Dooku at the end. Although a bit goofy at times, this fight is still a knockout -- seeing little Yoda kick butt against the evil Dooku is a delight. Computer generated or not, Yoda has a lot more personality than anyone else in the movie.

As mentioned, however, there are too many long, dull scenes, overbloated CGI effects, and a love story that falls flat on its face.
