So I'm new to Gintama, I've only seen a handful of episodes, but this is a major bummer. I usually like heavily comedic stuff dubbed since jokes are easy to lose in translation and while I have not seen it, the Ocean dub seems pretty darn good. So... bummer.

There are differences in how dubs are approached in each language, applying any voice acting traditions used normally in another language isn't likely to work for another.
I can tell you the exact same thing happened to Dynasty Warriors 9 as well. So if you want more of this kind of acting in action...

Yeah...

Anybody remember what I said about having mixed feelings on Crunchyroll because of how they handled this so well, but Berserk so poorly? Well, that's gone.

However, I'm sure High Guardian Spice will make up for all of this. We just gotta have faith.

In Crunchyroll we trust.

?????

I don't think Crunchyroll had anything to do with this. They couldn't get the rights of the dub from Sentai or tV Tokyo. And as the original rights holder, TV Tokyo is free to commission whatever they want.

Crunchyroll has issues but not here.

It's hard to look at this in hindsight and not think Ocean drew the short straws of the Crunchyroll dub bonanza. It's been two years since Kiznaiver came out and there's been nothing since. We can now say for certain that isn't because they're compensating with more Gintama. So, their sole two projects were a notoriously difficult to translate series they were legally required to start hundreds of episodes in, plus a single cour series that was forgotten before the dub was announced ...

I appreciate CR giving us these two because if they hadn't, Ocean would've gone through the 2010s without dubbing a single new series aimed at audiences over 12, but still. The odds were stacked against them.

*anime achieves mainstream global phenomenon status in 2010s not seen since 90s/early 2000s*
*throws Ocean under the bus*

Yeah, I didn't look that deep into it. My bad.

Still, it's unfortunate that one of the only really cool things Crunchyroll had (for a mediocre streaming site, IMO) is done for.
