Default Porco Rosso: 199? JAL Dub

NOTE: GO OVER TO NEXT PAGE FOR MORE UPTO DATE INFORMATION
In the 90s, an English dub for Porco Rosso (1992) was produced by an uncredited company for JAL flights. This dub predates the Disney dub which was recorded in 2004 and released next year. The dub was only officially released on the first Japanese R2 DVD release in 2002 and shown at least a few times on television, all later releases use the Disney Dub.

Ghibli Wiki has a larger cast list than other websites I have come across but I find it very dubious as it credits VAs such as Steve Bulen, Edie Mirman, Steve Kramer, Kerrigan Mahan, Tom Wyner and even Carl Macek which I don’t find that believable. I can’t link the dub in full for others to watch it, however if you want to you can find it pretty easily if you know where to look.

Here are some excerpts I could find on YouTube:
A compilation:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=St2fR7aF63U
“It is so degrading, having to ask an American for help”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB_Q...0s&app=desktop
“I have nothing at all to say to that comment”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1Rg...23&app=desktop
“I’d much rather be a pig than a fascist”:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nRcn0r8j6lo
“Gina, we’re going to Hollywood together”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVgM...25&app=desktop
“You’re gonna destroy this magnificent SHIP I made with AXES?”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruqC...24&app=desktop

Here’s a review of the movie I found on YouTube where the guy mistakenly uses the JAL Dub thinking it’s the Disney dub: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lTzAqepMe9I

EDIT:
I’ve been looking around the web and this site looking for samples of Japan-based voice actors who sound like the characters in this dub and I think I have a candidate for Gina’s VA. Carolyn Miller is a Japan-Based voice actress and narrator who’s voice seems to match that of Gina. Here’s a sample of her voice (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R_-dQ3KwN-s), sounds decently close to Gina’s voice in the previous links. Another recent find is that Barry Gjerde also voiced the guy who Porco buys his bullets from as heard in his demo from this website: http://www.saico.com/narrator-demos/

EDIT 2:
I’ve sent an email to Rebecca Forstadt regarding her role in the dub, hopefully I’ll get a response soon.

EDIT 3:
Cast has been updated to removed Barry Gjerde’s credit until further notice.

CAST (TO BE CONFIRMED, EDITED SINCE ORIGINAL POST):
Porco - ???
Donald Curtiss - Greg Dale
Gina - Faith Bach
Fio - Lynn Harris
Mr Piccolo - ???
Mama Aiuto Gang Leader - ???
Kidnapped Girls - Lynn Harris

ADDITIONAL VOICES:

EDIT 17/8:
Unknown Voice Analysis:

Porco:
The person with a voice closest to Porco’s I have come across is comedian Patrick Harlan who came to Tokyo in 1996 (Aged 25/6). In all footage I’ve found of him speaking English he has a naturally deep voice similar to that of Porco in the dub. He’s said in interviews that in order to get jobs in Japan he simply told people he worked as a “DJ, narrator, actor, model and voice actor” which he wasn’t, though he was pursuing acting in particular.

Japanese Wikipedia credits him as appearing in at least one episode of some long running Japanese TV show in 1996 as well (said show started in 1990 and is still running, a soap opera perhaps).

If he was in it, then the dub would’ve had to have been produced in early 1996 (he’s never said exactly when he arrived in Tokyo to my knowledge) as the dub was first released on LD in August 1996, although I don’t know when exactly the dub started being shown on JAL flights as no-one on the Internet has provided any first-hand knowledge of seeing it on any flights. Add to the fact that both the dubbing studio (Frontier or whoever dubbed it) and JAL would’ve almost certainly never would’ve kept any documents regarding the dub since there was no union for foreign voice actors at the time.

By 1996, it had been 4 years since the movie was released before the dub was released on LD but if it was indeed dubbed in 1996 this wouldn’t be unusual as studios such as Frontier wouldn’t get most jobs to dub anime until several years after said anime’s release. In the case of Arcadia of My Youth (1982) it was apparently both dubbed and released in edited form the same year (1987). Coincidentally, Lanny Broyles who starred as Harlock also arrived in Tokyo the same year it seems, based on what Bladez has said elsewhere.

Patrick Harlan’s normal voice: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5CRBbJWVejc

Patrick Harlan as Narrator in Little Charo (0:45 - 0:50): https://m.facebook.com/logged_out/wa...com.au%2F&_rdr

Porco samples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GTsfQuJpG8

If Porco was not voiced by Harlan, the only other Tokyo guys I know of who mIght’ve been able to pull off a voice similar to Porco are Lanny Broyles (https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Lanny-Broyles/), Walter Carroll (https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...Joe-Shimamura/) and perhaps Richard Nieskens, though he was probably living in Hong Kong at this point. Unfortunately Harlan doesn’t seem to have any offical website or social media profile (In English) to contact him.

Curtiss:
EDIT 1/9:

NOPE, asked Walter via email and he said no. Back to the drawing board.

Mr Piccolo:
I get the feeling Piccolo was voiced by the same person who voiced Porco, just a feeling. But if they were played by seperate people I’d say Piccolo sounds most similar to Lanny Broyles. Whoever voiced him also definitely voiced the Blond Pirate who says: “You know us Gina! We wouldn’t fight within a 50 mile radius! Yes, we wouldn’t do that!” as well as the Fuel Station Manager.

Taking a listen, that's not Rebecca. Beyond the fact that it's a Tokyo dub and the logistics behind her appearing in it don't add up; I just am not hearing it. Forstadt's voice usually sounds more authentically child-like; here it just sounds like a woman trying to sound like a young girl and only sounding somewhat like Forstadt.

I always speculated that this dub might've been a later dub by Frontier Enterprises, but not hearing William Ross' distinctive voice in any capacity in the clips basically confirms otherwise. Not to mention, it would've turned out significantly better than what we've got here.

I got a response from Forstadt, she doesn’t remember being in this particular dub, though she says she might have done “additional voices” at “Magnum 8”, which I’ve never heard of though she might be referring to Magnum Video Tape and Dubbing, take it with a grain of salt.

She never outright denied involvement, though admittedly it’s my fault for immediately jumping to conclusions too quickly. Have you watched the entire dub? I did so that was the first voice that jumped out at me besides Gjerde and Harris. I mean, the voices are remarkably similar, she also appeared in the Swiss Family Robinson dub which was done by Magnum.

I haven't had the access to watch the whole dub; but none of the voices jump out to me; they all sound pretty unremarkable.

The world's a big place, and while Forstadt has a pretty unique voice; there's going to be plenty of voice actors who can come half-way close to her voice. I've watched enough dubs with Forstadt's voice to recognize her voice; it's not her. The closest it comes to sounding like her is at 0:54; the only thing I could even consider is the voice direction being so bad she sounds off, but that's a stretch. Simple logic would dictate she wouldn't be in something dubbed in Tokyo when she has had no history of ever doing dub work there; the same reason 95% of the voice actors listed on the Studio Ghibli wikia for this dub are rubbish. A joint LA/Tokyo dub job is also extremely unlikely since dubbing in places like Tokyo or Hong Kong are primarily done because it's on the cheap.

I see where you’re coming from, I’ll see whenever I can get some clips uploaded onto Dailymotion or something so others can get a feel for the voices. While browsing this site I managed to find one of the VAs from the 2003 PS2 Transformers game (a Tokyo-dubbed game if I’m not mistaken) who sounded like one of the minor pirates (specifically the guy on the tail gun in the beginning) in the dub, he’s Jack Merluzzi although this is just speculation on my part.

https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...ers/Grotusque/
https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...ers/Bumblebee/

This Megaman X7 character also kinda has a similar voice to the tail Gunner pirate:
https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...Wind-Crowrang/

EDIT: Predictably, Youtube and Dailymotion block any uploads of the dub I try to post. Any other alternatives? Internet Archive perhaps?

Edit 2: I’m currently uploading clips of the dub to a file sharing site. Each video is organised by character, unless you feel like getting ahold of the dub yourself.

EDIT: REMOVED OLD, TERRIBLE LINKS, NEWER AND BETTERER CLIPS ON THE NEXT PAGE

My first candidate for Gina was Rumiko Varnes (https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Rumiko-Varnes/) though I quickly dropped her because I was basing this assumption on just one of her voice samples and Gina’s accent in this dub is simply too consistent to be Varnes, though Varnes also appeared in Michigan: Report From Hell which Lynn Harris directed and voice acted in so maybe there’s a chance Varnes is in this dub, just in a very minor role or something.

My current candidate for Gina is Carolyn Miller who doesn’t have any samples on this site but her voice definitely sounds like Gina in this dub. She’s also done work for JAL but more announcer/narrator work than voice acting. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R_-dQ3KwN-s

Looking at the dub again, some minor pirate roles also sound like they could have been done by Jeff Manning (also done dubs for JAL and Frontier Enterprises, mostly supporting/minor characters) and Jack Merluzzi, though I haven’t really gotten around to looking at them too closely yet.

I honestly don't think that's Barry Gjerde playing Porco Rosso. His natural voice sounds very jovial and gruff, and even though he can hide his jovial sound at times if he uses his range, the gruffness always seems to be there and seems to be a clear giveaway whenever he plays a character. I just don't hear either his jovial or gruff sound when listening to Porco here, and it sounds like someone speaking in their regular voice so I'm not sure how much of it can be attributed to him using his range, his inflections sound completely different than Barry's and his voice sounds much lighter as well.

Unfortunately I don't know who else it could be, but I get the feeling that if he is in this dub, it's most likely as another character. (It does sound like he's playing the guy over the radio in the first video at 1:10)

I haven't looked too far into it so if there's a site or an interview confirming that he's Porco, then feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but based on all the clips I've seen I just don't hear it.

Yep, Barry is Porco, he is just not “officially”credited for playing him on any official English site, much like Tom Clark’s stint as Lupin III in the Frontier dub of Mystery of Mamo, he is only credited on Japanese voice acting/narration sites. The trick is to type the Japanese characters for the film’s name in first then his name in English or Japanese.

In Japanese at this website (https://www.g-angle.co.jp/narration/...ator/en_a/723/) one of his credits reads “Kyarakutā - Beninobuta eigo-ban”, translated it means “Character - Red Pig - English version”, the red pig being Porco Rosso.

Also, good catch on the radio guy’s voice, his delivery definitely sounds similar to various Barry Gjerde-narratored commercials I’ve heard (“Motorcycle riding is fun!”, http://www.gaikokujin-talent.com/pro...gjerde_cm3.mp3).

Kurenai no Buta (紅の豚) is the Japanese title of the movie as a whole. That may be indicative of him being in the movie but not necessarily playing the role of Porco Rosso.
