Default 2013 Category and Nomination Discussion

As you may know, awards season is upon us! Behind the scenes, we're hard at work at prepping the awards. So in the meantime, why not talk about some of the best, strongest, most award-worthy voice performances and performers of the last year?

(Do note that any discussion here will not necessarily have a direct effect or bearing on the awards, but is primarily a fun discussion topic you can deal with in the meantime)

(As with last year, the anime awards will be held separately so anime performances do not count toward the main awards)

Yay!

-

Male Voice Actor of the Year-

1. Troy Baker (This award is pretty much his. He had an absolutely INCREDIBLE 2013 with some of the best performances in voice acting history, particularly in The Last Of Us and Bioshock, but also as the Joker in Arkham Origins.)
2. Rob Paulsen (He's pretty much everywhere, though none of his performances really stand out in a huge way. Maybe the best comedic voice actor out there.)
3. Jeff Bennett
4. John DiMaggio
5. Nolan North

Female Voice Actor of the Year

1. Tara Strong (Nobody's really emerged as a leader in this category but Tara Strong's continued to make a very difficult job look very easy with her performances in a variety of things. Raven from Teen Titans Go stands out.)
2. Laura Bailey
3. Ariel Winter (If we want to get cute and acknowledge just how incredibly good the under-18 crowd of voice actors have been in recent years, let's give this to Ariel Winter. She hasn't had a lot of roles but she's been absolutely fantastic in the ones she's had and is worth at least a look in this category.
4. Grey Delisle
5. Ashleigh Ball

Breakthrough Voice Actor of the Year

1. Zach Callison (His performance as Steven Universe particularly stands out here. Incredibly mature and professional for his age, he's already got considerable vocal range and has a very bright future in this industry. He's my pick to win this award.)
2. Courtnee Draper (Splendid performance as Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite, among the very best voice acting performances of the year.)
3. Idina Menzel (For Elsa, of course.)
4. Jonquil Goode (Voices a ton of characters in Monster High and Ever After High. Great range and acting ability. Could be the next Kate Higgins.)

Well Troy Baker should be up there for Best Male - Video Game since his voice for Joker blew almost everyone away.

In general, I look forward to this year's awards. Great talent around every corner these days.

Any chance of seeing a category for webtoons/web originals? I'd love to see a category for stuff like Red vs. Blue, RWBY, DBZ Abridged, Monster High, and other web stuff to compete in. Lots of great voice talent in those.

No.

If we ever did include web stuff it would be "official" things by official companies. Monster High would be eligible for example (and its direct-to-video specials are already). Fanmade stuff will never be eligible for the BTVA Awards.

Would something like RWBY be eligible since it's an original work?

The thing is, we don't have a section for web content on the site. Before we do, we have to set up a system so we can know what can and cannot be included. It's a potentially grey, murky area and we are 100% against having fanmade stuff like Yugioh Abridged or Newgrounds Sonic flashes on the site. The problem is defining what is "fanmade" and what isn't, since something on the internet isn't going to be inherently "professional". Anyone can do it. Not to mention that it's a massive pool of primarily amateur content, so there'd be serious digging to find anything that can even be considered award-worthy.

At any rate, even if web content like RWBY was decided theoretically eligible, at this point in time it's much too late to seriously consider them for the awards.
