Default Re: Porco Rosso: 199? JAL Dub

Well, I finally managed to get a hold of a proper rip so I’ll replace my older uploads with ones with better sound ASAP.

Piccolo and the Fuel Station Manager are definitely the same person:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HN8HioidPw

Old guy’s voice is goofy, hard to identify:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTNJX-uN6as

Fio + two miscellaneous female voices, possibly Lynn Harris based on vocal similarities:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRPnAIqAG1U
Lynn Harris voice demo for comparison:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZqpu6e4Ico

Telephone guy and Radio guy are definitely the same person, I’m inclined to agree with one of the previous posters that this could be Barry Gjerde:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ng_FJzi0AUA

Gina, possibly Carolyn Miller based on vocal similarities:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8JnSepZLzQ
Carolyn Miller voice demo for comparison:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_-dQ3KwN-s

These clips are of various minor male voices, posting them because they don’t have any ridiculous cartoon accents which will make identifying their voice actors much easier than the main cast.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhq1qCbt7Ps
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBFoIeqTyKo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtN6D2e3ZMM

EDIT: Okay update time. I’m gonna post this here so I don’t lose it later.
I found Barry Gjerde’s old personal website from the early ‘00s on Internet Archive (http://web.archive.org/web/200502091...gj/profile.htm), his resume credits him with playing four roles in the dub but doesn’t specify any in particular or if he played Porco. I’ve also found another minor character he plays which is the Watchtower Announcer at the dogfight gathering. Unless Gjerde has a bad memory (which he probably doesn’t considering the stuff he could recall in his Resident Evil interview) and/or has a much bigger vocal range than I anticipated, I have now come to the conclusion Barry Gjerde is NOT Porco.

EDIT 2:
One new voice I think I’ve identified is the Fuel Station Boy who sounds kind of similar to a “man” voice done by Rumiko Varnes in a voice demo reel on her personal website. I’ve sent her an email with a link to the character’s lines and am wanting for a response. Thoughts?

Fuel Boy: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GL0WBvOAniU
Rumiko Varnes voice demo, specifically the voice at around 2:15 in “Characters”: http://www.rumikovarnes.com/

Default Re: Porco Rosso: 199? JAL Dub

Sorry to double post but my above post was getting kinda crowded.

I’ve had no reply from Varnes, but I’d say her “man” voice on her website is close enough to what you hear in the dub.

(OUTDATED: IGNORE)
I think I found a fit for Curtiss’ voice, Walter Roberts who came to Japan in 1992 so he at least fits the timeline. Since Curtiss as a character has a southern accent, there aren’t much of Walter’s roles that sound similar to Curtiss but I did find a few clips on his YouTube channel I thought sounded similar to Curtiss.

JAL Curtiss:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVPbs0dqbP0

Walter Roberts roles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EARY...L9T94a6l2qxzzw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtrA...2qxzzw&index=2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCuF...i&index=2&t=0s
(OUTDATED: IGNORE)

EDIT: (IGNORE: OUTDATED THEORY, MOVE ALONG)
I was gonna put this here earlier but I was in a hurry. This next bit is more of a theory, I’ve recently been thinking about Robert Belgrade possibly being Porco. He doesn’t have it credited on his website (I’d doubt he’d remember) and no role of his is really a 1:1 fit to Porco’s voice in the dub but I thought it might be a theory worth bringing up (He came to Japan in 1990 for reference). I’ll let you decide though.

JAL Porco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GTsfQuJpG8
Robert Belgrade’s normal voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYtl9JTAapU
Belgrade as Alucard: https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...Night/Alucard/
Belgrade as Cao Cao: https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...ors-2/Cao-Cao/

Even if Belgrade isn’t Porco, the guy who voiced Porco probably also voiced the purple jumpsuit pirate who says: “That’s him up there in the Sun. As usual”. The voice is basically the same but with a European accent.

EDIT 2:
Nope, asked Belgrade about this via email and he said no. Back to the drawing board.

EDIT 3:
Probably should have put these here together a while ago.

Kidnapped Girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_0_ofaPZAM
I’m gonna take a guess and say the girls are all Rumiko Varnes.

Mama Aiuto Gang: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfP3DoST-2o
Only one of these I can guess is the Tail Gunner guy who sounds like a couple of Jack Merluzzi roles

Miscellaneous Pirates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLcSbjv6E6w
One of the blond moustache pirates sounds like whoever voices Piccolo, not sure who anyone else is.

Ferrari: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdRi8WBi4uo
Voice is pretty plain so I don’t know who it could be.

EDIT 4: Walter Roberts is a no no.

Default Re: Porco Rosso: 199? JAL Dub

Thought I’d give an update after the severs changed.

Updated Cast List:
Porco: Patrick Harlan (Assumption, based off similarities to his own voice) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GTsfQuJpG8
Fio Piccolo: Lynn Harris (Highly likely)
Donald Curtis: Greg Dale (Highly likely)
Gina: Faith Bach (Assumption, based off her role in Chase The Express)
Mr Piccolo: Clay Lowrey (Assumption, based off similarities to his performances in Cyborg 009 and Dagger of Kamui)
Mama Auito Gang Captain: ???
Kidnapped Girls: Lynn Harris (Highly likely, I feel so stupid for not coming to this conclusion sooner) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_0_ofaPZAM

Additional Voices:
Telephone Voice, Radio Narrator, Munitions Engineer, Watchtower Announcer: Barry Gjerde (CONFIRMED)

Maxwell, Dogfight Observer: Jeff Manning (Highly likely) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBFoIeqTyKo, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ_xH4UDoNc

Mediterranean Queen Loudspeaker, Fuel Station Waitress: Lynn Harris (Highly likely) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRPnAIqAG1U

Fuel Boy: Rumiko Varnes (Likely, assumption based on a “man” Voice from a voice demo on her website. I emailed her about this but got no response) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL0WBvOAniU

Bank Teller: Greg Dale (Very similar to his Curtis voice, at first I thought this was Mike Worman but Greg Dale is more likely after identify his voice) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhq1qCbt7Ps

Toothbrush Mustache Pirate: William Ross (Assumption, has only one line to go off of, but to be honest, after hearing his voice so many times I don’t think it’s anyone else) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aNvwQA...&index=19&t=0s

EDIT: LITERAL WALL OF TEXT INCOMMING

Unknown Voice Analysis:
Porco:
The person with a voice closest to Porco’s I have come across is comedian Patrick Harlan who came to Tokyo in 1996 (Aged 25/6). In all footage I’ve found of him speaking English he has a naturally deep voice similar to that of Porco in the dub. He’s said in interviews that in order to get jobs in Japan he simply told people he worked as a “DJ, narrator, actor, model and voice actor” which he wasn’t, though he was pursuing acting in particular.

Japanese Wikipedia credits him as appearing in at least one episode of some long running Japanese TV show in 1996 as well (said show started in 1990 and is still running, a soap opera perhaps).

If he was in it, then the dub would’ve had to have been produced in early 1996 (he’s never said exactly when he arrived in Tokyo to my knowledge) as the dub was first released on LD in August 1996, although I don’t know when exactly the dub started being shown on JAL flights as no-one on the Internet has provided any first-hand knowledge of seeing it on any flights. Add to the fact that both the dubbing studio (Frontier or whoever dubbed it) and JAL would’ve almost certainly never would’ve kept any documents regarding the dub since there was no union for foreign voice actors at the time.

By 1996, it had been 4 years since the movie was released before the dub was released on LD but if it was indeed dubbed in 1996 this wouldn’t be unusual as studios such as Frontier wouldn’t get most jobs to dub anime until several years after said anime’s release. In the case of Arcadia of My Youth (1982) it was apparently both dubbed and released in edited form the same year (1987). Coincidentally, Lanny Broyles who starred as Harlock also arrived in Tokyo the same year it seems, based on what Bladez has said elsewhere.

Porco samples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GTsfQuJpG8

Survivor and Porco Comparison: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VSuJQOxS-ok

If Porco was not voiced by Harlan, the only other Tokyo guys I know of who might’ve been able to pull off a voice similar to Porco are Lanny Broyles (https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Lanny-Broyles/), Walter Carroll (https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...Joe-Shimamura/) and perhaps Richard Nieskens, though he was probably living in Hong Kong at this point. Unfortunately Harlan doesn’t seem to have any offical website or social media profile (In English) to contact him.

Curtiss:
EDIT 9/1:
Asked Walter Roberts about this via email and he said he wasn’t in it. Back to the drawing board.

Mr Piccolo:
EDIT 9/5:
Previously, I thought Piccolo might’ve been voiced by Lanny Broyles, but now I think it’s much more likely he was voiced by Clay Lowrey. Whoever voiced him also definitely voiced the Blond Pirate who says: “You know us Gina! We wouldn’t fight within a 50 mile radius! Yes, we wouldn’t do that!” as well as the Fuel Station Manager.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wLcSbjv6E6w
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3HN8HioidPw

Piccolo samples (NOTE: I accidentally left in Porco’s line “Let her rip!” at the end thinking it was Piccolo, honest mistake): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptzwlyprkks

Here’s a comparison video I put together comparing Lowrey’s voice from Dagger of Kamui and Piccolo’s voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxO1sLEBtVM&app=desktop

Here’s 3 seconds worth of Lowrey from Cyborg 009 (In mono, use headphones): https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...rg-008-Pyunma/

EDIT 9/11:
There used to be a theory in here about Ken Frankel being Curtiss, but that was me being stupid.

EDIT AGAIN:
God I’m embarrassing. Dropping the Ken Frankel theory and I’m now going with Greg Dale as Curtiss. For reference, he came to Japan in 1991.

Curtiss clips: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YVPbs0dqbP0
Greg Dale Voice Demos: http://www.jktalent.jp/jk_narrator/J...reg%20Dale.mp3
Greg can be found in the Soar High Isami! dub (9:26 - 10:00): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O165WHbXkjw
Greg in Bloody Roar 3: https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...even-Goldberg/
Greg in Tekken 4: https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...en-4/Hwoarang/

EDIT 9/12:
I’m dropping the Carolyn Miller theory as I can’t find any evidence of her being in Japan in the 90s. My current candidate is Faith Bach based on her role in Chase The Express, she uses a slightly British in that game but I can hear similarities. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dhfTJWfTGOo

Bach can be heard from 3:50 - 5:00

Gina Clips (Replaced the old one since that one featured barely any lines): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=myl-7N...&index=25&t=0s

Another idea I had was Maya Sackheim although she had only one role ever so I’m not certain: https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...lena-Stoddart/

EDIT 9/15:
I’ll be setting up voice clips since this is the only Miyazaki movie with multiple dubs (not counting Nausicaš) that is missing voice clips/comparisons. More to follow.

EDIT AGAIN:
I believe the guy who voiced Ferrari in this dub also appeared in the PS1 game Space Griffen from 1995. He can be heard in this video from 0:00 - 1:08 and throughout the game: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lrwCeDdJUV8

The VA credited for this character is a guy called Julian Macfarlane, who has only one credit on this site. I can also hear a bit of his Marshall Law voice in Ferrari as well. https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com.../Marshall-Law/

Ferrari Clips: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SdRi8W...&index=16&t=0s

Clips for Eventual Voice Compare
Getting pictures for characters who’re missing from the site’s page. I have none of the necessary hardware or space to make proper Blu Ray screencaps so I just took screencaps from Kissanime as placeholders. If anyone with the proper stuff can make better captures I’d appreciate that.

EDIT 11/3:
All JAL Dub clips are done, now begins the task of collecting clips for the Disney equivalent. Might have to create a 2nd thread just for the Disney dub because there is no definitive, proper, complete cast list for Disney’s dub either. Not every little character needs to be identified, just the ones I’ve got here will be fine. Haven’t bothered to check the Disney dub on my Blu Ray copy but since it’s one of the newer releases I doubt it’ll have the dub credits at the end since it was most likely based off the JP print used for the JP Blu Ray. Which would mean the older DVD releases probably have dub credits, but it will probably just be proper credits for the main cast + a list-of-names under “Additional Voices”.

JAL Dub: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0gBdOLhoAql (???, though there is one minor female character who says “Look! A flying pig!” in the scene with the tour plane who has basically the same voice minus the stupid accent. So this could just be Faith Bach doing a voice)
Disney Dub: (Tress Macneille)

PORCO ROSSO (YOUNG):

JAL Dub: https://vocaroo.com/i/s087vS8tAoNA (The “Are you okay?!” bit sounds kinda Avi Landau-ish, while the rest gives off a much-older-John Armstrong-trying-to-sound-like-his-younger-self vibe)

Default Re: Porco Rosso: 199? JAL Dub

I probably shouldn’t be bumping my own thread so many times, but I would like to hear the opinions of others before I start to go crazy. I’m now starting to think that Porco and Piccolo were voiced by the same person and not Lanny Broyles or Clay Lowrey as I was theorising previously but I want other people’s opinions. You don’t even need to know anyone in the Tokyo talent pool, I would just like to know if other people think these are the same voices.

Here’s Patrick Harlan, the guy I believe could’ve played Porco and/or Piccolo in this dub. He came to Tokyo in 1996 (He starts speaking at 3:20): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5CRBbJWVejc

Here’s some clips of Porco: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6GTsfQ...&index=11&t=0s

Here’s a comparison of Harlan from Resident Evil: Survivor and some other bits from the Porco Rosso dub (Plus a minor character who has basically the same voice as Porco): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VSuJQO...oNES1&index=19

Now here’s clips of Piccolo (Go back and re-familiarise yourself with Harlan and Porco’s voice if that helps): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptzwly...oNES1&index=17

Ages ago, I theorised this might’ve been Lanny Broyles doing an accent. But I doubt that old theory. Here’s a reel of his roles for the unfamiliar: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z94GsWc7Ypg

My second guess was Clay Lowrey who I find more believable than Broyles, though I have no idea if he stayed in Japan into the 90’s. He appeared in two Frontier Enterprises dubs from the 80’s, here’s a comparison between one of the dubs he was in and Piccolo: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lxO1sL...&index=21&t=0s

If I HAD to make a life-or-death decision regarding who was who, I’d say Porco and Piccolo were voiced by the same person. Although I haven’t really brought it up, despite how much time I’ve dedicated to identifying the voices, the actual voice cast is actually rather small. Not Fernandez-dub-small but it’s small even in comparison to other Tokyo-dubbed anime of the period. For instance, nearly every time there’s a big crowd reacting to something, the people responsible for this dub haven’t even bothered getting people for any background walla. Instead they simply switch back to the Japanese audio and the proper dubbing returns once actual dialogue starts. So I would not be supprised if Porco and Piccolo are indeed played by the same person considering this sort of stuff happens in the dub.

Harlan and his comedy partner have a Twitter, although it seems more like something run by a manager or something so I doubt you could even get anything out of him directly: https://mobile.twitter.com/packunmackun

Yeah, I think that Harlan as Porco is pretty much a lock. Very distinct, super macho voice, and Piccolo being the same person seems plausible.

Default Re: Porco Rosso: 199? JAL Dub

Looking over things again, I think I’m gonna retract my previous idea about Porco and Piccolo being voiced by the same person. I was only really thinking of the main characters and not really paying attention to any incidental voices they might’ve done. I took another look at the Kamui and 009 dubs and Piccolo being played by Clay Lowrey is the theory I’m going with for now. It would make sense considering Lowrey played accented characters in both Kamui ad 009.

I also think the Ocean Liner Captain (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhq1qCbt7Ps) might’ve been voiced by James Keating, if he was still in Tokyo at that point. https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/James-Keating/

Another idea I had was Dean Harrington possibly being the pirate with the white moustache and glasses. Though I will have to look into him more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLcSbjv6E6w

EDIT 9/26:
OUTDATED IGNORE
Feel pretty confident that I’ve cracked the code on another VA. Eric Kelso (came to Japan in 1989) seems like an additional voices guy who did the Munitions Dealer’s son, Young Porco and the guy who says “It seems like she’s been in there forever”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G9nlEOpBbk

Some other Kelso stuff as comparison:
Kid voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jei_H5TSMiM
Kelso in Space Griffon PS1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbD2...&index=21&t=0s
Kelso does Shenmue voices: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkKGe7MlzzY

Going off a couple of his deeper/villainous roles, I am also starting think he was also the voice of the pirate who lugs around a Lewis Gun (Red shirt, big nose, pilot headgear) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfP3...oNES1&index=13
OUTDATED IGNORE

EDIT 9/27:
Sort of related, but whoever’s filling in the cast list on Wikipedia (and is obviously lurking here) really needs to stop talking my theories at face value. They’re bad at formatting too, what a mess. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porco_Rosso#Cast

Back on topic, I noticed the Toothbrush-Moustached Pirate (Don’t know what else to call him) sounds similar to the Ocean Liner captain I mentioned earlier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLcSbjv6E6w

Similar to the captain I also thought his voice sounded kinda Keating-esque: https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com...Great-Britain/

EDIT AGAIN:
Oh yeah, totally forgot of this one Worker at Hotel Adriano. He has basically the same voice as the Toothbrush-Moustache Pirate. (0:00 - 0:07) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtN6D2e3ZMM

EDIT 10/19:
I contacted Eric Kelso regarding this dub awhile ago and gave him a video reel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pofxRA0ShFI) of all the characters I thought sounded like him. This was his response:

“Hi *********,

Thank you for the email. I watched the YouTube video and listen to the voices twice.

I can hear Jeff Manning in there but that’s the only one I can place.

I don’t think I’m in there and I don’t remember doing that recording.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help! Eric”

So none of these are Eric, which is a shame but I had some other ideas if none of them proved to be Eric so it’s not that big of a deal. Interestingly he did pick up on one of the voices being Jeff Manning but never said which one, I tried sending a response asking about this but he hasn’t responded since. Though going with my gut I’d say Jeff was probably the Mama Aiuto Pirate who carries the Lewis Gun around (“The Pig is signalling! Give me the hostages and half the money!”). I already noticed Manning did 2 minor parts in this dub (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ_xH4UDoNc) and Manning (In movie dubs at least) frequently played parts that masked his actual voice (Arcadia of My Youth, 009, Dagger of Kamui ect), since this is a Tokyo dub it’d make sense that they’d get the main guys to try different voice characterisations between major and minor characters.

EDIT AGAIN:
Found a decent fit for that pirate I was talking about from a Jeff Manning voice demo (3rd play button on the right). https://narratorindex.impleo.co.jp/jeff-manning/

Default Re: Porco Rosso: 199? JAL Dub

Just posting this as a head-up. Recently my software has crapped out on me which means I have no easy way to continue working on this little project of mine for quite a while. Until I sort things out this thread is pretty much dead-in-the-water.

I also feel like I should have mentioned this earlier (But I wasn’t sure about this site’s policies so I avoided mentioning it) but this dub is actually pretty easy to find if you know where to look. At some point, the JAL Dub must’ve aired on some bilingual Japanese channel not too recently. I mention this because my rip (and practically every other rip of this dub on the web I can find besides the clips on SpaceHunterM’s channel) has fades to black + japanese text pop-ups every so often which makes it seem like a TV airing.

And about the rarity of the dub, somehow, and I don’t know how, whoever recorded the JAL dub wherever it came from has (rather quietly) spread it pretty far and wide. Seriously, go to basically any of the big anime pirating sites like KissAnime or whatever and 9 times out 10 you’ll get the JAL dub instead of the Michael Keaton one. It’s actually kinda insane how this has happened but it’s out there and it’s decently easy to find and download for yourself. As for me, I found the JAL Dub by simply searching “Porco Rosso dub mp4” and found someone with a Google Drive of every Disney Ghibli dub except for Porco Rosso which was also the JAL Dub and downloaded it from there. So you can get ahold of the dub that way if you’re not into Kissanime’s pop-ups.

I felt like throwing this all out since I’m practically leaving this Thread as-is for however long it takes for me get back in business. If anyone feels continuing where I left off or using my clips for creating Voice Compares you’re welcome to do so. Shoot me a message if you want anything else.
