Scrappy Doo's casting process was a nightmare.

Mel Blanc - Interested, but wanted too much money
Frank Welker - Auditioned, coined "puppy power", lost the part to Don Messick
Don Messick - Recorded first track, ABC hated it and brought Daws Butler from the auditions
Daws Butler - Recorded first track, ABC hated it and got Marilyn Schreffler from the auditions
Marilyn Schreffler - Recorded first track, ABC hated it and got Frank Welker from the auditions
Frank Welker (2) - Recorded first track, ABC hated it and got shafted for Paul Winchell or Dick Beals
Paul & Dick - Neither got to record, Mark Evanier suggested Howard Morris and Marshall Efron.
Howard Morris - Considered himself banned from H-B after telling Joe Barbara to eff himself years ago.
Marshall Efron - Had his audition shown to the creators, they loved it but ultimately got Lennie Weinrib.

A little more trivia: Lennie Weinrib would've come back for Scrappy in season 2 if Gordon Hunt wasn't the director and he got more money. Mark Evanier was actually close to getting it without hard feelings from Gordon.. then H-B realized they would have to deduct Gordon's salary and they weren't able to.

And Lennie wanted more money.

Grey DeLisle almost didn't voice Azula. More famous actresses were considered, but she got the role since she never went too over the top, being more calm and collected.

I don't know whether it's fitting or not that such a controversial Scooby-Doo character had such an involved and complicated casting process.

That seems to happen more often then not where a VA lands one of their major roles because the more "big name" celebrity that was planned to voice the character didn't pan out.

I'm genuinely amazed by this....like wow.

Especially surprising with Howard Morris being "banned" for a while but it does at least explain him eventually voicing in 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.

It is funny that Don was basically THE voice they thought was perfect except for the executives but in the end he eventually ended up with the role.

I kinda wish she named names, cause I'm interested in who else auditioned for her.

I've heard that in the Invader ZIM episode "Abducted", they actually screwed up the vocal track and credits for the Abductors in the episode. Eric Trueheart and Paul Greenburg (The VAs for Abductors Blue and Green respectively in the aired version of the episode.) recorded what I assume was a scratch track for the episode, but then Brian George and Jim Wise were brought in to dub them over. Somehow the takes by Eric and Paul were accidentally put over the episode instead of Brian and Jim, with the latter pair still being credited.

Jhonen Vasquez also stated in the commentary track for the episode that they originally sought out John Cleese and Eric Idle to voice the abductors, but they declined. I'm really curious to hear what Brian George and Jim Wise as well as John Cleese and Eric Idle could've given, but I'm kind of glad things turned out the way they did, because Eric Trueheart and Paul Greenburg were hilarious in the final product.

Roger Craig Smith originally just did scratch work for Ripslinger in Planes, but he gave such a good performance that he got the role.

Matt Danner initially did scratch work for Kermit in Muppet Babies 2018, but ended up in the role when he gave a good performance.

At 3:52, Grey DeLisle Griffin mentioned that she was only doing scratch work for Manolo's grandmother in The Book Of Life, but ended up in the role when she impressed the producers.

How can this be "What Could Have Been" when the casting choices in question happened?

I think what they meant was they were being used as placeholders in case if they got someone else (most likely more famous) but the producers ended up liking their takes so much they were picked anyways.

I was watching a behind the scenes video of Justice League: The new frontier. In it Bruce Timm said that the movie almost had the cast of the Justice League DCAU cartoon reprise again their roles but changed since he thought it would not give the film it's own identity. I'm glad it happened since the cast we got for movie is unique

This is why u often see new casts in DC animated movies
