Default Re: Mario (in general)

Oh dear, it appears I have made too many posts about my ideas. Oh dear. Anyways, I'm going to explain my rationale for some of my casting choices. As well as the rationale, siting my own ideas and fanon.

Character: Mario Marichelli
Actor: Charles Martinet
Rationale: Of all the Mario actors it's the most criminal to replace Charles. At least as Mario, with the others, it's another story as you'll soon see. His and Luigi's surnames are inspired by the alleged lore of "Mario" being their surname, which I found rather ridiculous. Furthermore, I'd imagine Mario's character being like that of The Fonz in Happy Days. He is basically the "cool guy" of the group. And while he works to maintain his reputation as the tough hardass, he is also a loyal friend to all he is friends with, and even some enemies.

Character: Luigi Marichelli
Actor: Rob Paulsen
Rationale: I first want to make it perfectly clear that I think Martinet does fine as Luigi. Normally, I'd cast Martinet for the role again. But I didn't because of the reason that my characterization of Luigi is different from what most people think of for him.

I have come to imagine Luigi as some sort of further contrast to Mario beyond bravery. Where Mario is a no-nonsense kind of guy, like in the Super Mario Adventures comic, I imagined Luigi being some sort of joker akin to Yakko Warner, hence me getting Rob in on the role.

Character: Princess Elizabeth Patricia "Peach" Toastool
Actor: Jodi Benson
Rationale: Ariel, and most of Benson's other heroine roles, are typically the spirited, sweet girls that Peach is typically portrayed as. As far as "Peach" being a nickname, I found it rather odd that most other humans had realistic names. Hence me making Peach a nickname.

Character: Princess Daisy Minnie Call
Actor: Kath Soucie
Rationale: This idea came to me seeing a Little Engine That Could adaptation from the 90s. Where Kath voices the title character, which feels like a near perfect fusion of her voice from the N64 era and today. Here, Daisy's name comes from Daisy Duck, Minnie Mouse, and Flora Call (Walt disney's mother).

Character: Toad
Actor: Barry Gordon
Rationale: I imagined the Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Yoshi as a team akin to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Where Toad would serve a role similar to Donatello. If he were still alive, I'd cast Wayne Allwine in this role. But he isn't (though I did create an alternate reality for my ideas where he still was alive). Anyways, since Allwine's dead, I had to think of another character that was somewhat high pitched. But not to the point of annoyance. Barry Gordon's Donatello voice feels like a great way to capture such voice.

Character: Yoshi
Actor: Billy West
Rationale: Similar to how I imagined toad as being like Donatello, I imagined Yoshi as being like Michaelangelo. In that they are the fun loving goof-offs, the "party dudes" to quote the 1987 series theme. Which is why I though of Billy West for the role. Since his voice is rather goofy in the early half of his show.

I'll tell you all more soon.

Since no one had done this yet. I'm going to crate a voice cast for if the franchise existed in the 1960s.

Mario: Daws Butler
Luigi: Howie Morris
Princess Peach: June Foray
Princess Daisy: Janet Waldo
Yoshi: Hal Smith
Toad: Don Messick
Rosalina: Jean Vander Pyl

Bowser: Mel Blanc
Bowser Jr: Dick Beals
Ludwig Von Koopa: Hal Smith
Wendy Koopa: Janet Waldo
Larry Koopa: Don Messick
Lemmy Koopa: Lucille Bliss
Morton Koopa Jr: Howie Morris
Iggy Koopa: John Fielder
Roy Koopa: Daws Butler

Kamek: Sterling Holloway

Wario: Paul Frees
Waluigi: Paul Winchell

Pauline: Mae Questel
Donkey Kong: Mel Blanc
Diddy Kong: Don Messick

Sure, all this would take a willing suspension of disbelief, but this would do for the 60s.

Okay. Now that Super Mario Odyssey's out. Let's talk about voices for Cappy.

At first I thought of David Tennant. But he's more Scottish and London, so he wouldn't be the best.

I also considered Eric Idle. But that would make him sound too old.

Any other ideas?

Well if you're going off the sound clips he has in the game, none of your choices really fit Cappy in the slightest.

The only voice actors I can think off immediately are Dee Bradley Baker or Sam Reigal. Or if you want to use a female voice to better capture (pardon the pun) his childish voice, Veronica Taylor or Candi Milo

Like I said, I couldn't think of any other choices. At all.

Furthermore, I wasn't going off the sound clips. I was going off what cultures they are based off of. In which case Cappy and the Cap Kingdom is a stand in for London. Hence an English actor.

Old news, but since it has been confirmed that Illumination is working on animated Mario movie, here's my idea who they could/should get for the (inevitable) celebrity cast.

Danny DeVito - Mario (typecasting, I know)
Jon Favreau or John Turturro - Luigi
Ginnifer Goodwin - Princess Peach
Alan Tudyk - Toad
Andy Serkis - Bowser

Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! English cast

Disclaimer: I actually really dislike this movie. I think it's poorly written, makes no sense (even for Mario standards), and badly animated. But I know this movie has quite the following so I decided to go ahead and give this a try.

Mario, Luigi - Charles Martinet, or Eric Bauza if Charles can't
Princess Peach - Sam Kelly
Bowser - Fred Tatasciore
Kinoko Sennin/Mushroom Wizard - Jim Pirri
Kibidango/Doggy - Tara Strong
Prince Haru - Ryan Drummond
Miss Endless - Jessica Strauss

Extras (ie Toads, Goombas, ect): Dee Bradley Baker, Keith Silverstein, Grey Griffin, and Jess Harnell
