Default "Pokémon: Detective Pikachu" (2019)

First official trailer for Detective Pikachu just came out and it turns out to be pretty promising.

What are your thoughts?

I approve of your comedic thread title.

Thank you. Now what do you think of the trailer over all?

As a fan of the games I find the Pokemon aesthetic hideous.

I think the issue is they look like they came from an animated world (like Looney Tunes in Space Jam, the recent Smurfs live action movie, or even those Pokemon Go ads)

If that was the premise they'd look fine. But they're supposed to be like animals in our world so their original designs don't fit in naturally because we're so used to seeing those designs in animation, games, books etc. Our mind is wired to see them in a non-live action setting.

My main issue, and this is likely due to early CG, is that most of the Pokemon (bar Pikachu) have poor lighting. There's like a bright haze covering all of them, so they don't look like they are actually in the scene.

Of course if they went with the fan art we've seen over the years where the designs are tweaked to look more realistic, then it might've worked better. On the flipside, you'd have less brand recognition, could be creepy and less cute (see below) and some people would rage because they didn't look like what we're used to.

Can't win either way.

To be honest, my inevitable (albeit unreasonable) criticisms started when I first found out they were making a live-action CG Pokemon film to begin with.

However for reasons mentioned above, not to mention with Pokemon being the massive kids juggernaut brand that it is, I've come to accept it was going to happen eventually and I'm just trying to focus on all the positives I have for the trailer.

...That said, for a first trailer I actually think they don't look too bad. Certain Pokemon would look scary in real life, if we're being honest (that Mr. Mime... shudders...) and some shots did take into account the environment and scope (e.g. the Bulbasaurs, Psyduck and Pikachu of course).

I like the cast, there were a few subtle motifs in the score and it's admirable they're trying a different tone to the anime. Everything else though... we'll see, but from this first trailer the film might not be so bad.

Was that still Ikue Otani as Pikachu's "normal" voice?

As far as I can tell.

Maybe, or even someone else like Tara Strong, or even Cristina Valenzuela.

Although if they did bring back the original actress that would be gratifying for many fans.

Honestly think this is a great way to do a Pokémon movie. Anyway you slice it, a “normal” Pokémon movie would just have so much to work for a 2 hour movie (plus other issues like what region or characters to use while still working for a general audience).
Here they don’t have those problems, now while I won’t say that automatically makes it good but it is the smart way to go.

As for the trailer, the two main leads seem pretty strong (and I could always use more Ryan) and the Pokémon look like someone who knows enough about Pokémon is working on them. We saw a Mister Mime scene and no one cares about Mister Mime!
I’m decently looking forward to this.
