Wait, so, this show and characters crossed over with Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH...and now the new Spider-Man show, which is clearly a reboot from Ultimate Spider-Man?!

I haven't seen the show in a while, but did they really just do that? That's pretty hard to comprehend.

Technically, this version of the Guardians didn't team-up with the Ultimate Spider-Man version of Spidey.

That series featured the pre-reboot for movie synergy version of the Guardians, who also appeared in AA and SMASH before this cartoon made the movie-esque versions the "canon" versions.

But Marvel Animation and it's haphazard continuity doesn't really bear too much deep thinking on.

But bear with me here.

Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2017 are obviously different continuities. The 2017 Spider-Man is blatantly a different continuity than 2012 USM, given the differing storylines (coupled with massive recastings and aesthetic changes to differentiate itself from the previous series). The reboot cannot exist in the same universe as its predecessor. No one's denying that.

Ultimate Spider-Man, released in 2012, clearly shares continuity with 2013's Avengers Assemble and 2013's Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. The (99% consistent) casting, designs and crossover stories solidify this. Not to mention the showrunners stating so. Sure, there are some re-castings that happen, but that's not uncommon and to be expected when you have three titles with 10 seasons across more than five years. Some redesigns happen, mostly due to wanting to have a stronger connection to the live-action MCU. But despite those overall surface-level changes, these three shows are definitely in the same universe with each other.

The Guardians of the Galaxy appeared in all three of the (at-the-time) currently airing Marvel Animation shows: USM, AA and SMASH. They first appeared in a more comic-book accurate design, but were still included in order to help promote the upcoming live-action GOTG movie in 2014. After the success of the movie, the Guardians' presence in those three shows increased, and as we got closer to the 2015 Guardians of the Galaxy series' release, the Guardians' designs, voices and personalities were altered in order to better reflect the 2015 series. They shared the same aesthetic, but their costumes were altered. Everyone except Drax was re-cast, their designs went from "comic book" to "just copy the movie" because the "copy the movie" aesthetic is what the 2015 series was using. So suddenly Chris Cox's comic book portrayal from USM, AA and SMASH was replaced with Will Friedle's "Chris Pratt Light" design and portrayal. Same with Gamora, Groot and Rocket. Drax's design was the only thing that was altered, as they kept Sobolov as the voice. Why else would the Guardians' appearances/voices/portrayals be consistenly altered across three airing shows if not to connect with the 2015 GOTG series and establish continuity between them? Despite the visual change, they are still clearly meant to be the same characters that the series previously showed us. It's more-or-less accepted that the 2015 GOTG series is a prequel to most of the events of USM/AA/SMASH. In the first season, the Guardians crossover with Thor and an Asgardian story (sharing the same voice cast, design and portrayl as Thor/Asgardians had in USM/AA/SMASH). The season two finale shows that the Guardians crossover with the clearly Avengers Assemble styled-group of Avengers (same AA design aesthetic, voice cast*). Therefore, we can conclude that the 2015 GOTG series is in the same continuity with the 2013 Avengers Assemble series, based on the various crossovers that the two series have had. And if GOTG 2015 share continuity with 2013 AA, that means that it also shares continuity with 2013 SMASH and 2012 USM.

*Save for Josh Keaton as Ant-Man and Mick as Stark

So if GOTG 2015 shares continuity with 2013's AA and SMASH (and by extension, 2012 USM) and 2012 USM cannot share continuity with its reboot 2017 Spider-Man, that means that GOTG 2015 cannot share continuity with both, which is what the recent episodes seem to have implied: the GOTG 2015 share continuity with 2012 USM...but also with Spider-Man 2017.
