Default Vintage DC Cartoons Appreciation Thread

Hey guys, I just wanted to make this thread just to show how much I love these cartoons.

These are my brief descriptions...

Fleischer Superman cartoons:

These cartoons are extreme animation gems. Not only do you get four members from the old time radio show (Bud Collyer, Joan Alexander, Jackson Beck and Julian Noa) reprising their roles and playing additional characters, but you also get animation way ahead of it's time. No one has been able to do this type of animation ever (though the 1978 Lord of the Rings is pretty close). Excellent character designs, fluid movement, film-noir type of stories and top-notch performances really make these cartoons extremely enjoyable and timeless.

1960s Filmation cartoons:

These are pretty cool to watch. The cast is composed mainly of radio veterans, four of them involved in the 1940s Superman radio show (Bud Collyer, Joan Alexander, Jack Grimes and Jackson Beck). Also you get more superheroes like Aquaman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Teen Titans, etc. These cartoons were the first step towards the greatness that the next show would bring.

1973-1983 SuperFriends:

OHHHH, YEAH!!! If you were a DC fan and craved to see your favorite superheroes joining forces to fight against evil or situations out of control, the SuperFriends cartoons from 1973 to 1983 were the ones that would no doubt satisfy you. Great performances, awesome stories and pretty cool animation made this show a classic.

The Plastic Man Comedy Hour:

I love this show. Michael Bell was a great choice for Plastic Man, and he really seems to have fun with the role. Also, it had a lot of stories to offer, whether it be Plastic Man stories or stand-alone stories.

1977 Batman cartoon:

Oh, yes!!! The campiness returns!!! Adam West and Burt Ward are just as great as they were in the 1966 live-action show, and the supporting cast is pretty awesome as well. This is a cartoon that never fails to entertain.

The Kid Super Power Show with Shazam!:

A pretty enjoyable series. Great performances, awesome moments and really enjoyable main characters makes this show worthwhile.

SuperFriends - The Legendary Super Powers Show:

Now this is where things start to get AWESOME!!! This show is the first to feature Darkseid, and also, the sense of peril is also increased in this show. This show also introduced my favorite Brainiac design. Stanley Ross had played Brainiac in a previous story starring Aquaman and El Dorado, but it's in this and the next show in which he really shines. Also, we get Frank Welker giving a pretty menacing performance as Darkseid, Adam West playing the modern, darker version of Batman for the first time and Mark L. Taylor giving a great performance as Firestorm. This show took a very bold step with it's more complex stories, more menacing villains and a real sense of a threat.

The Super Powers Team:

Now this is a show that would really please most DC fans. Awesome stories that delve into character personalities and pretty dark concepts for a TV show make this cartoon a must-see. You get Adam West giving a pretty powerful performance in the episode "The Fear", in which Batman's origin is told outside of comic books for THE FIRST TIME!!!! Superman dies in an episode (even if it's for a while) and he also loses his powers in another. Also, the addition of Cyborg really gave us another opportunity to explore character personalities. Another show with awesome stories and performances.

1988 Superman cartoon:

Now this is what the 1996 Superman cartoon will never be. In my opinion, this show is vastly superior than the DCAU Superman series. Cool 80's designs, pretty entertaining villains, excellent performances, likeable characters and most importantly, two stories in one episode. The first story dealt with Superman fighting villains and saving the day, while the second story delved with young Clark Kent growing up in Smallville. Also, it has the John Williams Superman theme on the intro. Another pretty underrated show.

Swamp Thing:

A pretty underrated show. Len Carlson gave a sympathetic performance as the Swamp Thing, and that made you relate to the character more. It's a pretty good show, in my opinion.

Batman - The Animated Series:

The last vintage DC cartoon ever was one of the finest ones ever made. The Super Powers Team episode "The Fear" served as a backdoor pilot for this show. Excellent stories, awesome performances, brilliant casting and top-notch animation have made this show one of the best shows of all time.

PERSONAL NOTE: In my opinion, the only other shows of the DCAU that manage to capture the greatness of the 1992 Batman cartoon are 1997 Batman cartoon and the Batman Beyond cartoon. Some of the other shows, like the 1996 Superman cartoon and the Justice League cartoons, don't really do it for me and somehow, I found them to be somewhat lacking in a lot of aspects (performances, stories and casting).

This first thread also includes short documentaries about these cartoons featuring people involved both in these cartoons and modern cartoons.

These documentaries are...

What is your opinion of the 1988 Superman cartoon because I think you left that one out?

It's incredible the amount of time and dedication you give to these cartoons Starscreamsfan.

I had to do some of these write-ups in a hurry, and I didn't have time to finish my 1988 Superman write-up. But I'll add it as soon as possible.

Thanks. I really love the Vintage stuff, especially old time radio shows. My favorite being the Superman radio show.

By the way, I also did a Vintage Marvel thread which you should check out.
