SAG updates its dubbing contract for the first time in two decades

So it looks like SAG has finally updated its dubbing contract. A few years ago they made a new one especially for Netflix, but the general use one has remained unchanged since 2001. It set the voice...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

Well, just like when they established Blue Water, or when they tried to get into DVD authoring, I doubt they're doing it just for funsies. There must be a business calculation that making the...

Re: "Unchahted" (2021), Starring Tahm and Mahk

Could be worse I suppose. But it's weird seeing all these set pieces lifted from the games in what was supposed to be about Drake as a youth...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

For what it's worth, it looks like Sinclair specifically was announced because he was attending the con as a guest of Toei, and was present at that panel as well as their One Piece and Dragonball...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

Funi seems like they keep their internal studios fully occupied, so they're probably the most likely to outsource. And any projects involving Blue Water would be protected from a full Yashahime at...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

I expect it's the latter. Sad that Japanese companies are their only reliable customers. Still, not a lot of opportunities left to work on a Miyazaki production, so good on them. Be interesting to...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

I do wonder what part Ocean played setting this up. Given the whole Dragon Quest thing, I assume this wasn't just a one off special arrangement but a plan to offer US talent to their clients....

Re: History of Canadian voice acting

I believe that would be Bucky O'Hare in 91, which was the first of several Sunbow/Marvel productions. Ocean started doing dubs for Viz in 93, but they dubbed Spiff & Hercules from French in 92. I...

Re: History of Canadian voice acting

Well no, it literally isn't. Saban just did the music, and DIC had no involvement whatsoever. Jetlag was distinct company from DIC and Saban, regardless of where some of it's staff used to work.

Re: History of Canadian voice acting

I remember once reading some kind of promo piece on Josanne Lovick of BLT Productions... As I recall, she said she was involved in negotiating an original animation contract with the Union of BC...

Re: What exactly the reasoning for the "block of names" style of official voice credi

To be honest, I don't think there's any one clear reason for it. Well, for lower budget productions it's probably to cut any corner they can, and non-union productions would at times want to...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

I wonder how she's recorded. They could hire a full studio to do it like BZ does with Yashahime, if Bushiroad wants her badly enough to pay extra. But given the Dragon Quest thing, I think they might...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

I suppose if COVID broke the remote recording barrier, and you're already getting away with mixed Vancouver/Blue Water casts... Adding non-union US talent to the mix is the next step.

Could of...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

From what I've seen of the ACTRA/SAG agreements, they make it pretty clear that the US is SAG territory, and everything done there must be under SAG. So it's possible the expats ACTRA thing is...

Re: Baki sentai redub

It's kind of eerie how similar their situation is to the one ADV faced as licensing costs skyrocketed during the 2000s DVD boom. Then they accepted an investment from Japanese conglomerate Sojitz...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

Well, this would only affect actors in the US (unless Ocean's really screwed the pooch and gotten ACTRA pissed off at them as well).

Having thought about it... This is presumably about Ocean...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

I mean, Ocean Media is not as far as I know a union signatory - Interpacific Productions is. It's always the latter who hires the actors in Vancouver, and who's also the one listed as SAG signatory...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

Bang Zoom has 3 different facilities to feed, and with Sony/Funimation gobbling up a major client like Crynchyroll, I assume they're aggressively going after any remaining dubbing work that's still...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

Yes, Sherman worked on those dubs as a consultant for Sunrise. Keep in mind though that that relationship started before Ocean and BZ were direct competitors, possibly before BZ had their own...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

I never fully trust credits. And I don't think there would be anything preventing them from hiring people in Alberta under ACTRA contracts if the situation warrants it. Given the mixed cast we've...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

Hasn't Don been moonlighting for Blue Water for the last decade? If he's in Alberta, and BZ is using someone other than Ocean to record in Vancouver, they might just have written him off as no longer...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

In the 2000s, Animaze was the expensive one, while Bang Zoom, Ocean, New Generation Pictures, Media Concepts, Studiopolis, Elastic Medai, etc. seemed competitive with each other. Arvintel was...

Re: Unknown US dub voice cast for a British 1994 (or '93) holiday TV special?

This post would be better suited for the Whose Voice is This? (https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=101) forum, hopefully a moderator can move it for you.

Anyway, it...

Re: Are Vancouver dubs going to go extinct?

The Xaolin Chronicles cast is fascinating. I guess you're right, SAG must have conceded the ability of members with Canadian citizenship to work under ACTRA even within its jurisdiction.

"Actors...
