First off, I have watched the Legend of Thunder (I was a HUGE Pokemon fan a few years back. I enjoy the franchise more casually now). Sonic isn't a kid like Jimmy is. He's a teenager. At 15, it's perfectly normal for his voice to have deepened.

Secondly, Sonic and Goku have a lot in common. Fans have been comparing the two series for YEARS. At heart, they're both heroic, happy-go-lucky types who can be serious when time calls for it. If Sean used his Goku voice, he'd be a perfect fit.

As for Blaze, I didn't want to take the cheap way out, but there weren't any other VAs I felt could really nail the character.

Well, Goku's an adult, so my point still stands. I would much rather prefer women voicing Sonic, such as Keiko Utoku.

I still think this makes no sense at all. Sonic is 15; he shouldn't sound like a child and having a child's voice isn't in character for him at all (and I've never heard a woman successfully do a teenage voice).

But to each their own. If that's your opinion, I'll respect it.

Goku is a man in his 20s with the personality of a 10 year old boy. He has a passion for fighting, lives in the middle of nowhere, and he isn't not very bright. He's can be pretty creative though (yay Dragon Ball). Usually, he'd make pretty selfish decisions, but cares for his friends even though he doesn't care much about hanging out with them all the time. He fights to push his limits. It's what he enjoys, saving the world or whatever's just icing on a cake for this guy. (I'm going by the way Dragon Ball Kai, the Japanese version of Dragon Ball, and the manga portrayal here)

Sonic is a bit inconsistently portrayed (as far as short-tempered and cocky-ness goes), but still a far cry from Goku's personality. The closest he's ever gotten to matching Goku's personality is Sonic X. But, that's about it. In early games and the movie, he is a confident, short-tempered hedgehog that hates oppression and likes the challenge. Saving the world is kind of like his job, really. He can be pretty snarky too, so he's closer to the Flash or Dante from DMC as far as personality goes if you had to compare him to anyone.

Other than a few details, they're different.

So yeah...HA HA Overanalysis of two fictional characters that sell millions of DVDs and video games. *shot*



But, with that said...Sean Schemmel MIGHT work if he tries something a tad different. I'm not a big fan of his Goku. He gets Goku's character but his voice is far too heavy to take fully portray his personality properly without sounding shrill or strained. But, as Roger Craig Smith as proven, heavy voices work on Sonic. Well, even. Adds to his confidence without taking anything away. So I'm not against it...I just don't see his voice coming out of Sonic's mouth clear enough in my head. ^^;

I like some of your choices, though. Maxey Whitehead and Chris Rager, especially. Great fits.

Well, what I meant was that even though some details are different, at heart they're similar light-hearted, fun-loving, carefree hero-types. Sonic is snarkier and Goku doesn't have a mean word to say about anyone, but they do have similarities.

Their supporting cast and the way they interact are similar also. Sonic and Shadow = Goku and Vegeta, Knuckles is Piccolo, Amy is Chi Chi, etc. That's what I was getting at.

Yeah, I see what you mean that Sean's voice is a little "heavy". But I'm sure if he lightened it up a bit it'd work. I've been thinking of making a video or something called "If Sean Schemmel Was Sonic" that'd play out how I envision his voice for Sonic, basically taking some of his Goku lines and playing them over Sonic scenes. If I ever make it, I'll post the link here.

Glad you liked my list. The only Funimation shows I've seen are Dragon Ball, One Piece, School Rumble, Sgt. Frog and Ouran High School Host Club, so it was a bit of a challenge to put together and add variety. In the same way, though, it was kind of fun.

I'm wondering why Studiopolis wasn't obliged to use any of these other LA-based VAs nor Yuri Lowenthal, Johnny Yong Bosch, Stephanie Sheh, and/or Crispin Freeman? Their inclusion(s) would have made the cast 1000x more epic.

And I still question how Sean Schemmel would voice Sonic and how comparable Sonic is to Goku. Sean can't do child/teenage voices very well, and there aren't many similarities between the two characters. Allow me to clarify:

• Goku is an adult, Sonic is a teenager.
• Goku loves to fight, Sonic doesn't (it's just what he does anyway).
• Goku is childish and immature, Sonic is more humble.
• Goku has super strength but is slower than my grandma, Sonic has super speed but obviously lacks excessive bulk/muscle mass.
• Goku is in a relationship, Sonic wants out of one.
• Goku wields the Kamehameha, Sonic can't even use a sword (Black Knight reference).
• Goku trains, Sonic travels.

I think I've made my point.

Like I said earlier:
Yes, I understand that they do have some differences. But as I stated, there are definite similarities.

I don't know why, but there are a number of factors like budget (it seems to be cheaper to use anime voice actors based on the large number of non-union productions that feature them), or the actors who auditioned. Or, another possibility is that isnce Sonic is Japanese, maybe Sega wanted voice actors who were experienced in anime. Most cartoon voice actors tend not to do anime usually because they find it constrictive compared to prelay.

As for why they didn't use those VAs, again it's likely that they didn't audition, that there aren't any characters they could play, or that they were too busy.

Anyway, I have a lot of faith in these voice actors. They have loads of experience, plus Jack Fletcher and Jamie Simone (the casting directors)... have you SEEN their resumes? They've done some of the best dub/casting work around. They know what they're doing.

Liam O'Brien as Sonic? Interested in hearing how he'd handle that. Was there a character he voiced that served as inspiration for that choice?

Three actually. His Stahn Aileron in Tales of the World, Mugen from Samurai Champloo and Johnathan from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. Sonic should be like Mario. He should have a unique and distinctive voice, and well...like with Roger's Sonic, he rarely ever uses this voice tone. He'd probably have to make it like his Gaara - sound like a kid, only be a little more energetic. It'll be different for him, but I think he'd work very well.

Jon Curry as Shadow was kind of a shot in the dark. I was sorta looking for something like the Japanese version, but for some reason he came to mind. He's got a unique voice quality that kinda sounds...I dunno...it might fit a ageless character like Shadow. Check out his Winter Soldier, and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks. It's been a while since I've watched One Piece, Sgt. Frog, or School Rumble, so DBZ is for the most part the extent of my familiarity with Funi VAs. With that said, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out (even though I got lazy for Big and Omega).

And yes, the reference in the thread's title was intentional. The Dreamcast is one of the most underrated systems ever. It died way too young.

How I would do a 90's cartoon

Sonic- Jason Marsden

Tails- Johnathan Taylor Thomas

Knuckles- Lex Lang

Dr. Robotnik- Tim Curry

Since this is a cast for a 90's series a lot of characters were omitted since they weren'r created yet. Lex is known for tough guy roles which is why I picked him. No one get started on why I said Robotnik instead of Eggman.

Who should voice Amy Rose
 

Cristina Vee would be perfect as Amy Rose. I love her singing and I especially love her voice acting, especially in Magi the Labyrinth of Magic and Skullgirls.
If you have any other suggestions, respond right away.
Some other options are Jennifer Hale, Wendee Lee, Kari Wahlgren, etc.anyone but the actresses that already voiced this character, but if you know nobody who can sound like Amy, you could just say one of the three actresses that already voice the character and/or how they could possibly improve.

I could see Kate Higgins doing a good job, but she already does Amy and Wave. I would like to see Tara Strong voice Tails one day, but I say she would be a great Amy too.

I could see maybe Tara Platt, Grey DeLisle, Kari Walghren, Kate Higgins or Laura Bailey doing a good job as Amy.

Laura Bailey and Kate Higgins, off the top of my head, would be the best to voice Amy, I think. Especially Kate... wouldn't be the first pink-haired/furred, dynamic fangirl she's played. If she wasn't playing Tails already, she would be best playing Amy.

I think either Ashleigh Ball or Tabitha St. Germain could do a good Amy Rose.
