New 2D TMNT Series in 2018

Well this news is... interesting.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...series-1053908

So far, I don't mind the cast for the most part, Eric Bauza has more than enough range to pull off a good Splinter, and it's nice to see Ben Schwarz of Randycunningham fame lend his voice to Donotello... but what concerns me is the role reversal with Leo and Raph.

Here Raphael is the biggest, and oldest of the brothers and this show's leader, while Leonado is the self-opposed "cool" member of the team... I know it's too early to judge but... what?!

That said I am digging that Rob Paulsen get to direct the voice over for a change, and idly enough I find him a worthy successor to Andrea Romano next to Charlie Adler.

I'm down to clown with these designs:

I've been wanting to see more explorations and playing with/of the Turtles' physical designs beyond just giving them different coloured masks. Have fun, play with the style, make them unique and stand out from previous incarnations. I'll take a risky aesthetic over a safe one any day of the week.

Also, gotta' love the internet.

"Visuals don't matter! It's the story and characters that matter!"
...
"These designs are terrible! The show is gonna' flop!"

These designs are pretty rad (not a fan of Splinter as of yet). Add in that John Cena will be playing a villain makes me super excited for this series.

Re: New 2D TMNT Series in 2018

Splinter makes me chuckle because he just reminds me of a Ren & Stimpy character. Like, I imagine this really nasally Igor/Ren voice coming out of him.

But before everyone gets all knee-jerky about the designs, let's look back on literally every other animated series in the history of forever that showcased early concept art for their characters before the series actually aired.
...
99% of the time, the art was a far cry from the final product in motion, or at the very least was only somewhat similar. Better or worse, your mileage may vary...

This was the first image we had of Bumblebee in RID2015. Anyone who's seen the show knows just how similar this is to the final product.

The Good Dinosaur concept art.

The NYCC teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy compared to the show itself?

While the overall designs are nearly identical, the art style between promotional images for Avengers Assemble and the actual show are different.

People lost their minds when they showed THIS was Starscream in Transformers Prime, going on and on about his heels, broken knees, dull colour and frail frame. Well, TFP Starscream is almost universally considered the best Starscream in existence. Why? Because of a great vocal performance, interesting character moments and a moving three-dimensional computer-generated character is quite different from a low-res, static, 2D illustration.

A 2D image of concept art =/= a moving, speaking animated character. Shapes change, colours change, heck, sometimes the friggin' style itself changes. So if your knickers are in a knot, or if you plan on knotting them up, just remember this calming phrase in these troublesome times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2WzkgkufyE

I’m okay with the turtles (maybe Raph will grow on me like Boom Knux), but Yoda Splinter.. yech, that looks really gross.. and look, I get what Tyler is saying about how the final product should be what we should be really judging and not still drawings, but a taste of this feels pretty weird. We don’t know yet (except Donny looks so f**king cool)

Then again, the internet became fine with blue armed Sonic unlike one Chan.

(Also I prefer my mantra to be from the 80’s)

That Splinter design is legit awful, it makes the Bay produced Splinter design look better in comparison.

Still I'm excited Eric Bauza is voicing him, just wish his character design was better.

The second I saw April the first thoughts that went through my head were "Oh dear god the internet is going to throw a hissy fit about this aren't they?" And it turns out I was right unfortunately. But yeah I'm not so sure how I feel about this. Don't get me wrong I don't have an issue with her being African it's just jarring to see a completely new redesign for her when I'm so used to seeing her with the old one. The other designs however...oh boy there bad. If anything they look like graffiti that you'd see in a city of Subway Surfers.

Leo, Donnie and Mikey - I need to see them in motion, before fully making my mind, but pretty good so far.

Raph - Same problem that I had with Platinum Dunes' version. So big and muscular that I can't buy this thing being able to move swiftly and disappear like a ninja.

April - Fine. Nothing standouts, but nothing looks bad either.

Splinter - Yeah, he looks pretty bad and his face has some unfortunate Asian stereotypes going on. The actual characterization of the character has to be really good for me to look past this.

When you are talking about April's old design, do you mean this one?

Or this one?

Or this?

Or maybe one of these?

From all of the major TMNT characters, April is probably the one that you have the most freedom to redesign, because the character never had consistent look.

What I meant to say was I was used to her having light skin and red hair. To see something completely new feels odd but I'm OK with it and I'm glad we're getting more African representation in Cartoons. However some people are accusing Nick of going full SJW which is a bit dumb. It's not like the Powerpuff Girls reboot where they just want views.

Nobody should care what people like that think.
