Yeah, a lot of them wouldn't openly talk to their fans that way, which I respect, even if their whinging gets obnoxious really fast.

I've still been keeping up with the Patton situation. I love how you got him to leave twitter twice! LOL.

And good on you for standing up for yourself. I actually liked the guy's voice work, so I was disappointed with all of this. Especially the DM's you got about Patton flirting with a minor. If that's true... yeesh.

I would absolutely consider Namikawa's actions to be worse than Hirano's, and I think he deserves some kind of comeuppance for it, but the thing is, he's an older man with a career established over many years, and he doesn't need to worry about public image to the same degree and in the same way an idol does. I consider his actions worse, but due to the circumstances, it doesn't hurt the profits of the people representing and hiring him nearly as much.

Also, if you read the comments in that thread, Hirano apparently openly trashed and insulted her fans who support her voice work on social media, and didn't hold her voice acting career in as much high regard as her music career. So not only did her actions mess up her music career, but her attitude hurt her standing as a seiyuu as well.

It's not that the people in the industry are straight up evil (well, maybe they are, maybe they aren't, but they're not solely responsible), they're obviously, deliberately marketing to lonely, delusional men who try to substitute actual female companionship with the fantasy these idols offer. Hirano was likely fully aware of this before she became an idol, and knew that if she was to be successful in that industry, it would come with sacrifices in her personal life (she'd at least have to be extremely private about her relationships and sex life).

When it got out that she was having sex with most of her band mates, the fantasy was ruined, her fans were angry and stopped supporting her, and her agency or whatever couldn't market her anymore. She was done. It is what it is. If she didn't want something like that potentially happening, she could have made different life choices and stayed out of a business such as that.

I do think the whole Aya Hirano situation is kind stupid, but the decision the idol industry made wasn't arbitrary. They don't have those kinds of strict rules about their idols maintaining a certain kind of public image for no reason. It's because the fans of idols, the people who make them money, demand it. You should give this thread a quick look (maybe you already have).

The reason the industry wants the idols to be the epitome of innocence, cuteness and so on is because it's what the fans want. Idol fans are being sold an image of these single, pure, virgin women who are happy with being cute, innocent, pretty, upbeat, and making their fans happy. If they're caught having relationships and being sexually active, it spoils the fantasy, and then the fans stop buying into it and the industry can't make money off of the idol.

I've also read some comments on YouTube and reddit saying that in Japan, their voice actors are able to go all out more because the industry takes care of them. Apparently, they're allowed breaks after really strenuous recording sessions to help them take care of their throats and vocal cords. They might even help them pay medical expenses if they really do some damage (not sure about this one).

I've read that in the US, that's not the case at all. The anime dub voice acting (union standard productions too probably) industry doesn't take care of VA's like they do in Japan. So if a voice actor really goes all out and injures themselves, then it's going to be mostly up to them to take care of themselves, depending on what kind of insurance they have I guess. They can't afford to take the same risks and strain themselves like they can in Japan. If they were to go all out and harm their voice, then they would lose work.

After thinking it over some, I think Erica would have done better in this scene if she wasn't lowering her voice as much as she is. I can tell that she's been trying to portray Gon progressively aging and gaining more experience, but now she's at a point that she's lowering her voice so much that it's hard for her to scream without her voice changing too much and creating inconsistency.

I think Megumi Han also lowered her voice slightly throughout the show, but not to the extent that Erica has. That seems to help her really let loose without worrying that her voice is going to sound inconsistent.

On the other hand, I thought Sarah Williams did a pretty good job, and even Cristina Vee's acting was really good. I still think her voice is somewhat unconvincing and and forced, but her acting is fair most of the time.

I watched the videos GOT-two just uploaded on YouTube, and this twitter video had a little more at the beginning that his videos didn't.

She had her moments, but it was an overall underwhelming performance that didn't have nearly as much ferocity and emotion as it needed. There were only two moments max where she was putting the right amount of power into her shouting. Not only that, but her voice was inconsistent and there were a few points where she started sounding way too womanly.

She did fairly well when Gon wasn't screaming, but even in those moments, Megumi Han outdid her almost completely.

Good to hear you're doing better.

Oh, well. Let him run and hide.
