Final - Theme: Star Wars

All members of BTVA are welcome to submit a performance for voice acting practice or just for fun! See below for details.

Congratulations to Pgirts and Stingervoice on making it to the first ever Act Your Voice Out finale!! Thanks so much to everyone who has participated in the contest so far whether it be as one of our amazing finalists, a voter, a commenter or simply a follower. We are now down to the final two in an all-out vocal brawl to the finish. However, before a winner can be crowned you both still have not one, but THREE CHALLENGES in front of you. We present to you Round 5, aka The Final Round... which takes place in a galaxy far far away!!

Up to this point you have delivered both lines and monologues for the various characters we have presented you with. In Challenge #1 you will once again tackle a monologue... HOWEVER, this time it will not be for a character, but for a NARRATOR! A narrator in a short period of time must capture the listener's attention, engage them and hook them into the content matter. Most importantly a narrator truly must act with his voice alone!
"A galaxy divided. Striking swiftly after the battle of Geonosis, Count Dooku's droid army has seized control of the major Hyperspace lanes. Separating the Republic from the majority of it's Clone army. With few clones available, the Jedi generals cannot gain a foothold in the Outer Rim, as more and more planets choose to join Dooku's Separatists. While the Jedi are occupied fighting a war, no one is left to keep the peace. Chaos and crime spread and the innocent become victims in a lawless galaxy. Crime lord Jabba the Hutt's son has been kidnapped by a rival band of pirates. Desperate to save his son, Jabba puts out a call for help. A call the Jedi are cautious to answer..."

Show Description
So, far in this contest we have yet to involve you in actual conversation pieces. That ends now! In Challenge #2 you will be asked to do something many voice actors do in their careers... to have a CONVERSATION WITH YOURSELF! You've already voiced two characters in Round 3, but now, it is even more important to provide us with two completely distinct voices not only in sound but in speech patterns and inflections as well. You have to make us believe that two different people are conversing with each other.

Cad Bane
Cad Bane
Show Description
(The dark lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, hires a bounty hunter to steal a Jedi Holocron, a device that stores mass amounts of secret and historical data of the Jedi)
Darth Sidious: "Excuse the interuption. As I was saying, Bounty Hunter, I have need of your services."
Cad Bane: "I'm listening."
Darth Sidious: "I need a Jedi... Holocron."
Cad Bane: "To get a holocron, I'd have to break into the Jedi Temple. It's impossible. Not to mention... deadly."
Darth Sidious: "Perhaps your reputation has been exaggerated."
Cad Bane: "I want a Rogue-class starfighter with elite weapons, cloaking device, the works. Oh, and... triple my usual rate."
Darth Sidious: "Your price is of no concern. I will also provide you with the means to get inside the Temple."
Cad Bane: "You've got a deal."

Show Description
For the last challenge, you will do one of the most common things voice actors do during a gig. In Challenge #3 you will voice ONE SIDE OF A CONVERSATION without being able to hear the other voice actor's side of the conversation. Due to scheduling conflicts and time restraints, voice actors are often in the recording booth on their own, having no idea what the other characters in the scene sound like. We have chosen one of the most powerful scenes in Star Wars history... the final battle between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
You will record each line as a separate clip and submit all of them together. We will merge clips from both finalists to form the full conversation. In the interest of fairness, you will be asked to record both characters, ie. both sides of the conversation.

Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Show Description
(Anakin, who has now turned to the dark side of the Force is blindly convinced that the ways of the Sith is how the galaxy should be governed. His wife Padme tries to convince him to change back to the person he used to be. However, Anakin becomes angered when he believes that she has brought his Jedi mentor Obi-Wan to bring him into custody for his criminal acts. Obi-Wan does his best to persuade his former student, his friend, that his new path is wrong. Words then lead to an epic lightsaber battle.)
Anakin: "You're with him. You've betrayed me! You brought him here to kill me!"
(Anakin reaches out, and Padme grabs her throat as she starts to choke.)
Obi-Wan: "Let her go, Anakin."
Anakin: "What have you and she been up to?"
Obi-Wan: "Let her go!"
(Anakin releases his grip on the unconscious Padme and she crumples to the ground.)
Anakin: "You turned her against me."
Obi-Wan: "You have done that yourself."
Anakin: "You will not take her from me."
(Anakin throws off his cloak.)
Obi-Wan: "Your anger and your lust for power have already done that."
(Obi-Wan flings off his cloak.)
Obi-Wan: "(continuing) You have allowed this Dark Lord to twist your mind until now . . . until now you have become the very thing you swore to destroy."
(They circle each other until Obi-Wan is near Padme. He places his hand on her.)
Anakin: "Don't lecture me, Obi-Wan. I see through the lies of the Jedi. I do not fear the dark side as you do. I have brought peace, justice, freedom, and security to my new Empire."
Obi-Wan: "Your new Empire?"
Anakin: "Don't make me kill you."
Obi-Wan: "Anakin, my allegiance is to the Republic ... to democracy."
Anakin: "If you're not with me, you're my enemy."
Obi-Wan: "Only a Sith Lord deals in absolutes. I will do what I must."
(ignites his lightsaber)
Anakin: "You will try."
(Anakin ignites his lightsaber. Anakin lashes out at Obi-Wan, and they begin a ferocious sword fight. The fighting is long and intense, but Obi-Wan is forced to be on the defensive.)
Anakin: "Don't make me destroy you, Master. You're no match for the dark side."
Obi-Wan: "I've heard that before, Anakin... but I never thought I'd hear it from you."
(The battle intensifies.)
Obi-Wan: "The flaw of power is arrogance."
(Obi-Wan stands looking at his former apprentice for a moment.)
Anakin: "You hesitate... the flaw of compassion."
(Obi-Wan and Anakin continue the swordfight. They battle away over a river of lava, balancing on a tiny platform and a puzzled droid. Anakin, standing on the Droid, approaches Obi-Wan on the work platform.)
Obi-Wan: "I have failed you, Anakin. I was never able to teach you to think."
(Anakin and Obi-Wan confront each other on the lava river.)
Anakin: "I should have known the Jedi were plotting to take over..."
Obi-Wan: "From the Sith!!! Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil."
Anakin: "From the Jedi point of view! From my point of view, the Jedi are evil."
Obi-Wan: "Well, then you are lost!
Anakin: "This is the end for you, My Master. I wish it were otherwise."
(Anakin jumps and flips onto Obi-Wan's platform. The fighting continues again until Obi-Wan jumps toward the safety of the black sandy edge of the lava river. He yells at Anakin.)
Obi-Wan: "It's over, Anakin. I have the high ground."
Anakin: "You underestimate my power!"
Obi-Wan: "Don't try it."
(Anakin follows, and Obi-Wan cuts his young apprentice at the knees, then cuts off his left arm in the blink of an eye. Anakin tumbles down the embankment and rolls to a stop near the edge of the lava. Anakin struggles to pull himself up the embankment with his mechanical hand. His thin leather glove has been burned off. He keeps sliding down in the black sand.)
Obi-Wan: "You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would, destroy the Sith, not join them. It was you who would bring balance to the Force, not leave it in Darkness."
(Obi-Wan picks up Anakin's light saber and begins to walk away. He stops and looks back.)
Anakin: "I hate you!"
Obi-Wan: "You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you."
(Anakin's clothing blows into the lava river and ignites. Suddenly Anakin bursts into flames and starts screaming.)
Anakin: *Screaming in agony*
Voters will have 6 performances to listen to. 2 Narrator Monologues, 2 Self-Conversations, Conversation with opponent version 1, and Conversation with opponent version 2!

In the end, there can only be one. A $100 prize and the winning title. Once again, the judges will have no say in the outcome here, it is all up to the people to decide who should be crowned the first ever, ACT YOUR VOICE OUT CHAMPION!!

Good luck and May the Force be With You ;)

I recorded the Emperor & Cad Bane conversation last year when the final round of Season 1 was still going. I forgot completely about it until today...figured I should upload it. :)

Hey, so if we're submitting something for BTS on this, do we just pick one of the challenges and follow through with that?
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 2:40 PM on Sun Jul 22 2012
@VocalChameleon yeah, I'd say just pick whichever one you find the most challenging. To be honest, if you wanted to, you could treat Challenge 3 like Challenge 2 and voice both characters in the same recording.
said at 9:41 PM on Fri Jul 27 2012
@Foxwolf Just submitted one, plus a submission for the other rounds of season 1. I hope I did a good job on them.
said at 7:58 PM on Fri Aug 3 2012
@Foxwolf Hey, just a quick question. If we submit something for BTS in this and the other Season 1 rounds, will they be available for others to listen to?
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 9:30 PM on Fri Aug 3 2012
@VocalChameleon yeah, I've gone ahead and approved all 5 of your season 1 submissions and they're showing up on the BTS pages. However I haven't flagged anyone as BTSer in season 1 so you're showing up as though you didn't audition. Also, the poll isn't active yet. I can fixed those issues later but for now you can share those pages with other people.

Great job on those by the way!

@Foxwolf Thanks. It just feels good to get these out there.

What's BTS?
said at 11:11 PM on Mon Oct 29 2012
@jedi8246 BTS is short for "Behind-The-Scenes." It's a chance for members who didn't make it through auditions to show off their chops by taking select pieces from the rounds of the actual competition and recording their own versions of it. There should be links to the Behind-The-Scenes pages for the other rounds to the right of the page. Check them out; there are some pretty impressive performances.

@ClintonWestfall we haven't set an exact date yet but the plan is still to hold Season 2 starting at the beginning of June.
We'll be posting banners on the site a couple weeks before Auditions open.

Challenge #1: I am going to be honest, this was both of your weakest one. PGirts, you sounded like you were advertising the next episode of the Adam West Batman, or the Super Friends. Which would have been fine for something of that like. I almost expected you to suddenly say "See you next time. Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!"
Stinger, you sounded more like an actual narrator, but, it seemed like you were not that interested in the story. That may not have been the case, but your inflections seemed to imply a kind of disinterest. Still, your take on it was more fitting of a narration and seemed more serious.

Challenge #2: This one both of you performed much better on. Pgirts, it was very easy to distinguish Sidious from Cad Bane. Both characters had their own speech pattens and sounded like two separate people, the inflections were good, too.
Stinger, while your inflections were solid and the acting solid, unfortunately, they both sounded like you, and not two people.

Challenge #3: Pgirts, your Anakin sounded a little too old at first, I guess you were trying for an out-of-breath voice. Still, you performed quite well as him, the inflections were all there, and you captured Hayden Chistensen's over-acting in the film quite well. As for your Obi-Wan, he sounded a bit too young. It is hard to describe, but something about it just seemed off, the acting was good, and the inflections were well done, there was just this odd feeling of something missing.
Stinger, this was, in my opinion, your best one. I could easily tell Anakin and Obi-Wan apart, and both seemed to fit the way the movie counter-parts were speaking. Your Obi-Wan, in my opinion, was better than PGirts. It seemed more like an older man trying to reason with a student than his did. As for the Anakin, honestly, I think you both are tied on that one.

Overall, you both have done quite should be proud of yourselves.

@Der Grapist

Not trying to offend anyone but based on your critique is sounds like you reversed your judgements on the Anakin and Obi-Wan lines - You may have had it flipped as far as who was doing which character in those clips.
said at 11:33 AM on Sat Nov 26 2011
I am waiting with bated breath to see who the winner is! What an exciting competition to watch! My vote went to Stingervoice, because I really believe he captured the emotion necessary, especially for the Anakin/Obi-Wan part. I think both contestants did a great job, and each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

I have to say it is really upsetting to see some of the mean comments made towards Stingervoice. I know Pgirts has some pretty dedicated fans, and that's awesome, but we can all act like adults, right? Show some grace, guys.

Pgirts and Stingervoice - you guys have both done an AMAZING job! I have followed this competition since the audition stage and I have loved hearing all of the performances!
said at 2:40 AM on Sat Nov 26 2011
Good luck to both contestants! You both did a bang up job! It seems you're both very gracious, even in the face of some pretty nasty comments being made here. Good for you for rising above! The only thing I will question is the logic of companies looking for voice actors if they don't hire both of you after this! LOL
said at 1:25 AM on Sat Nov 26 2011
Girts, I'm not really feeling your narrator voice all that great. I just feel that Stinger's got the better narrative voice, but all of the other voices you did just destroy Stinger out to the blue. I will question the logic of people if you don't win
said at 1:37 AM on Fri Nov 25 2011
Girts if you don't win there is something wrong with this world.

As I have done each round, my vote goes to PGirts because each round he has not only astounded my ears but touched my soul. Your talent is boundless and each round you have rocked it out.

I voted for stingervoice because he had the most impressive voice acting skills, in my opinion, during the entire competition, especially as a beginner. I like Stinger's Narrator and Obi-Wan the most, his Anakin is pretty good although I don't know much about his bcharacter before the whole Darth Vader dealy, hell your Anakin sounded like Vic Mignona at times (not a bad thing mind you). My main problem is your Bane and Sidious; Bane is a little generic and Darth sounds a tad too young. Also your acting was awsome in all of the clips

Hmmm.... this was different. I'm not sure how useful my critique will be, but here I go:

Challenge #1: both takes were interesting, but neither is how I pictured the narration in my head when I read it. Neither were bad, but Pgirts' take sounded a lot like a parody. I know very little about Star Wars, so I have no idea how it was said in wherever it came from, but I thought that, at least in this instance, StingerVoice was slightly better since I felt he sounded a tad more like an actual narrator. It was a little bland, but I thought it worked to some extent.

Challenge #2: This one goes to Pgirts. I could tell both voices were him, but that was only because I knew it ahead of time. If I was watching that on TV, I probably wouldn't have guessed they were both performed by the same person. There were times where it was more obvious than others, but I felt he overall, did a superior job. Now, that's not to say that StingerVoice's performance isn't good as well. His "Darth Sideus" voice was much better than his "Cad Bane" voice. His delivery for Darth Sideus was very respectable even if the voice sounded a lot like a young person playing an older guy, but that's why they almost always cast real older males in these roles (though Troy Baker ad Mike McFarland are both great at old men voices). StingerVoice's Cad Bane voice was kinda "there" at the beginning of the clip, but it got slightly better. There was one point where it sounded almost exactly like his Darth Sideus voice. But on their own merits, the delivery for both characters was very good.

Challenge #3: Here, the best performance was Pgirts' Obi-Wan Kenobi. It sounded like an older (but not elderly) man with a frail voice passionate about his pupil. StingerVoice's take on the character was a little young sounding, but as with the last challenge, his delivery was still pretty good. As for Anakin Skywalker, neither was perfect. I felt StingerVoice was better at Anakin than he was for Obi-Wan since his voice and delivery were both decent, but not perfect. Pgirts did overact on his Anakin likes IMO, and his voice sometimes sounded a tad too mature, and it was hard for me to believe that that was coming out of a rebelling teenager's mouth (I'm assuming he's a teenager, but even so, young adult can apply here too). Both VAs did a good job on the "I hate you" line which I felt was very important. I don't think Anakin really hated him, but that he was simply very confused at everything going on around him. He didn't know what side to take, who to trust, and was extremely angry, and blurted the line out. I liked that both of you captured that feeling. It could've been better, but I was impressed at what both of you brought to the table.

Great job you guys! I thought you both did a respectable job on all three of these challenges, but I'm giving Pgirts the edge, but both of you have the potential be be very great. Neither are perfect, but if you were, what more would there be to work on? That's what makes any kind of art or talent more exiting.

@PurpleWarrior13 Thank you for the advice. Next week is my 4 month anniversary as a voice actor. I recorded my voice for the first time EVER almost 4 months ago. I feel so extremely blessed to have done so much in such a short amount of time. This competition has been such a great learning experience for me and it has really helped me improve as a voice actor.

I am very grateful for your feedback, thanks! :]

Pgirts has my vote, he is the master at this!

Here are my critiques.

Challenge 1: This challenge is won by Stingervoice. I thought Pgirts sounded too much like a cartoon TV reporter (kind of like Tom Tucker from Family Guy, but not exactly) to be taken seriously as a narrator. While I wished there was a little more emotion to Stingervoice's narration, it wasn't at all boring to listen to and it helped draw me into the story.

Challenge 2: This challenge has Pgirts as the champion. I truly got the impression of two separate people talking to each other through Pgirts's performance. The Steven Blum-like voice for Cad Bane was a little surprising at first, but it helped keep the voice different from Darth Sidious's voice, so I can't really complain. Stingervoice, I commend you for making Darth Sidious sound a little different from Cad Bane, but there was still plenty of the same voice in both characters. Maybe if Sidious's voice was deeper, it would've been better.

Challenge 3: This is the toughest one yet, since both did an amazing job with the lines here. Both did a decent enough impression of Obi-Wan to keep with continuity, and still make the voice their own. As for Anakin, both had their own takes on the character descending into madness, and both pulled it off well.

This competition has been really fun to follow and progressively harder to make decisions for. Both of the finalists did a spectacular job, but in my opinion, the first Act Your Voice Out champion should be Pgirts.

I will do an objective breakdown.

Pgirts-Sounded like a narrator. However, it seemed forced a little bit on the side of being too animated.
StingerVoice-Reminded me a voice actor doing a briefing scenario for a video game, straightforward and bland. It was not forceful like in the actual movie.
#1Edge- StingerVoice. Both contestants failed to hit the same feeling and force given by the actual Narrator from the series. So, I have to go with who gave a better performance. StingerVoice.

Edge#2-Pgirts. Let's just get this one other with. Pgirts hit the voice and character of both Sidious and Bane extremely well. StingerVoice's Sidious sounded in his 30's while Bane sounded not like a confident, experienced bounty hunter, but an over-confident d-bag.

Edge#3-Both had good quality takes for both characters. However, StingerVoice's quality was that of a good VA for a poorly dub anime and Pgirts' actually was very. close to both characters.

Here's my honest critique:

I think both put forth a very measurable amount of energy here to the point that I'd believe it if I heard it in a cartoon show, Anime, etc. You both got that down pretty damn well.

But here's the thing, I voted for Pgirts because the range is a lot more prevalent. Now I don't want to say that RANGE is the only thing that matters when it comes to acting, because it damn well isn't. But when you are having a conversation with another character that you just-so-happen to be voicing as well, you want to differentiate the two so the audience can't really tell that they are the same actor.

Stinger, when I listened to Cad Bane and Palpatine, I heard your voice as both characters, there was a little inflection you added onto Palpatine’s voice but overall it sounded too young and way too similar to Cad Bane. This by no means is me telling you I think you did a bad job with the material, you acted very well, but when you have two characters that you need to supply your voice for, you need to make them sound as distinct as humanly possible. Why do you think Seth Macfarlane, Dan Castellaneta and Frank Welker are cast in so many dual roles, because each voice sounds completely diverse from the other for the most part.

The part I felt you did a fairly good job at was the narration, but alas that had it’s semblance of discontinuity as well. There felt like way too many awkward pauses and motions, as the narrator you need to keep reading your material consistently with the proper inflection, which you had, and without a moments stuttering.

I felt that you did a pretty damn good job with Obi Wan though, I really do. It felt as though placement of the lines were too far apart though, but I don’t think that was your fault. You also did a pretty good job with Anakin that much cannot be denied, but alas in terms of delivery, pacing, and overall naturalistic flair I’d have to go with Pgirts.

I feel as though too many voice actors rely ONLY on their voice to carry on a performance but that should never be the case. Acting comes first and foremost and it needs to be believable, just as if you were watching films like the Bourne series. It feels natural as if a conversation is actually genuinely happening. But that’s not your fault Stinger, that, to me, is the fault of the medium.

I hope you’ll take my critique into consideration for all future inquiries. And please do not take offense, I only wanted to be honest as a critique should always be.

@Westman20 Thanks so much for writing this up. One point I would like to make however is that for the narration I paced it that way because in the movie it is accompanied by a montage of things that are happening. I suppose without context that was not very clear that it was to show what would be happening as I said it (with pauses here or there).

Again, thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. :]

Narrator I have to give to Stinger - just a nice natural 'announcer' voice there.

Darth Sidious & Cad Bane I have to give to Pgirts - He just made the two voices more distinct and his Sidious was more believable.

Anakin I have to give to Pgirts just barely although I thought Stinger had the better last line and scream afterwards

Obi-Wan I have to give to Pgirts you had that voice nailed man!

Best of luck to both of you!!

Oh gosh.. that conversation at the end nearly made me burst into tears you two!! And I'm more of a Trekkie! LOL But goodness, wow, that was incredible. I've been voting each round but haven't really said much, so now I'm going to give my final thoughts, both positive and negative. If it offends anyone I apologize, but this is how I see (hear) it. ^^"

Personally my vote went to Pgirts once again. Mr. Pgirts your voice is so genunine! There's something about the quality and emotion in your voice that makes your acting REAL. As if you really are the character, and that really is important when it comes to voice acting. You're spot on with giving these well known characters a new twist while still keeping the strength of the scene. Your range is fantastic, and there's many genres of shows I could certainly hear you in.
But the only character who really needed some tweaking (IMO) was the narrator. He sounded a bit too CAPS LOCK, as in, he was shouting to me the info. It got my attention, but I certainly didn't want to hear him twice. xp

Stingervoice, with your voice, its unique for sure and you can also cover many genres, but it seems like you lost your cool in this round because of how you delivered your lines. Your narrator sounded very unsure to me, there was alot of awkward pauses, and your second set of characters sounded VERY similar so I colud barely tell them apart. But your Anakin? Superb. honestly, I love it alot, he was your best here, and that scream at the end was TOO GOOD. hahah

All in all, we have two very talented men here, personally I've been voting for Pgirts since round 2, and he has kept my vote until the end. But either of you could win, it jsut depends on the rest of us. ^^

Good luck you two! MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU! xD

@Wolfwings of course we can, and only coz of the candy Yoda :P

1. originally was going to be another character monologue instead of a narrator. The female character was going to be from the SW Extended Universe - Mara Jade

2. self convo - Ahsoka Tano and Aayla Secura from Clone Wars.

3. one sided convo - the final scene in Ep III with Anakin and Padme.

Stingervoice (AYVO S1 Runner-Up)
said at 12:10 PM on Wed Nov 16 2011
@OptimusSolo I sorta agree. The prequels were very entertaining but the writing was just plain awful in some parts. They were fun to watch but on an in-depth look they were not amazing. That being said, I love all of the star wars movies. :]

Also, ewan mcgregor was really good but I'm an obvious JAT fan-boy...I wouldn't be a voice actor right now if it wasn't for him. :]
Pgirts (AYVO S1 Winner / Master Of Memes)
said at 5:14 PM on Wed Nov 16 2011
@OptimusSolo I KNEW a prequel debate would get started here! I shall throw my hat into the ring!

Star Wars is a subject that I am very passionate about. I love the original Star Wars films. I consider "The Empire Strikes Back" to be one of the best movies ever made.

That said, for me, the Star Wars prequels are a massive missed opportunity. They have some of awful dialogue (sand "gets everywhere", anyone?), characters that are nigh impossible for me to relate to (Anakin is a reprehensible brat throughout all of the films), and they commit the worst crime of all; demystifying the Force and the Star Wars universe as a whole (midi-chlorians make me want to punch something).

However, I do think some aspects where handled pretty well in the films, namely Obi-Wan and the Emperor, and I feel this way mostly due to the actors really carrying the roles.

When I look at the awesome work of Genndy Tartakovsky, I just shake my head because his Clone Wars series shows that the prequels could have been fantastic. His was an animated series that really embraced and captured the feel of the original Star Wars trilogy; it featured great voice work, great animation, and great storytelling.

Honestly, I would never begrudge someone for enjoying the prequels. Hey, it you like them, more power to you. But for me personally, I cannot help but look at them and think what could have been.

Ok, nerd rant is over!

OptimusSolo (Admin)
said at 2:36 PM on Thu Nov 17 2011
@Pgirts I agree with most of what you said. Yes, of course there were missed opportunities and they could have been much much better.

My problem is that too many people write them off entirely like there were no good parts, moments, lines etc.. In the end it is still Star Wars and there are numerous epic moments/characters/lines etc.

Were they as good as the original trilogy, of course not, but if you just took Episode 3 alone I think it is definitely on par with the original three.
Pgirts (AYVO S1 Winner / Master Of Memes)
said at 1:20 AM on Sun Nov 20 2011
@OptimusSolo Yeah, I hear ya. The one person that I think did a truly fantastic job on the prequels is John Williams.

Say what you will about the prequels as films, but there is no denying that they have fantastic musical scores.
