Yuri Lowenthal

Yuri Lowenthal

Date Of Birth: Mar 5, 1971
Birth Place: Nashville, Tennessee, USA

Popularity: 14th All Time, 24th This Week

Trivia & Fun Facts:

  • Friend of Doug Erholtz and married to fellow voice actress Tara Platt.
  • Certified practitioner of Wu Shu kung fu.
  • Fluent in English, Japanese, French and German. He has joked that the only Spanish he knows is to order Mexican food.
  • Yuri had at one point been contracted by Bang Zoom! Entertainment to provide the English voice for Renton Thurston in Eureka Seven. After recording 13 episodes, he was replaced by Johnny Yong Bosch because it was deemed that his voice was too low for the character and all of the lines were subsequently rerecorded.
  • Yuri is never actually heard in Eureka Seven as a result, despite it previously being listed on his resume (there was however, one scene at the end of episode 7 in which Holland is watching Renton on a video and Yuri's original audio was not replaced. This may have happened because of the lack of visuals showing it was Renton on the video.
  • Was a little disappointed that he didn't get to voice Yuri Lowell in Tales of Vesperia, though he was glad that Troy Baker got the part.

I am so happy that Yuri FINALLY gets to reveal his involvement as Spider-Man in Insomniac's new PS4 game.

As a long-time fan of Spider-Man, I'm so looking forward to the game itself, as it looks so great and Insomniac+Spider-Man makes for a great combo for a game, and I'm really looking forward to hearing Yuri's take on Spider-Man. He's gonna be awesome in the role for sure! Can't wait!

Happy Birthday Yuri Lowenthal!

While it's never be the absolute most inspired casting choice for the web-head, it's great that Yuri will finally get his time to shine as Spider-Man for the upcoming PS4 game coming out later this year.

His performance as Harvey Dent in Batman: Gotham By Gaslight is a great example of his work as a VA. Sure it wouldn't fit a traditional version of Dent but for the context of this movie and incarnation it works. The best part of me about Yuri's Harvey is that he sounds a lot like Kevin T. Collins as Griffith.

I also liked his performance as Riddler in the DC Super Hero Girls series, though I can imagine he could do an even better job in the role either playing a more traditional take on Nygma or a much darker, malevolent take down the line.

Also looking forward to his upcoming performance as the Damian Wayne Robin in Batman Ninja.

Like with Josh Keaton, a former Spider-Man now currently playing Norman Osborn, we got Ben Tennyson himself now voicing Vilgax in the new Ben 10 series. That is so surreal, with that said it is a really noble effort and a massive playing against type role for him.

Also with his recent reprisal as Suzaku for the Code Geass: Akito the Exiled series, this is a good sign he'll be reprising the role again for the upcoming compilation movies and the inevitable R3 series that had been announced last year.

Happy birthday Yuri

It`s cool the past year yuri has been trying to break more typecast. It was cool to see him as Radar in Mincecraft telltale season 2 playing a nerd who is a big fan of Jesse. That character was alot of fun and is now one of my fav characters from him. It was glad to know working on the game was fun for him.

And it was cool he got to appear in the spider-man show but I`m really more excited he`s going to be spider-man again in the new ps4 exclusive coming out this year.

I mean hate insomniac has kept him on a strict nda till now. from what i`ve seen of the promos not only I`m sure the game will be good but Yuri will deliver an excellent performance as Spidey. He`s just that talented as a VA.

Also he still remembers Goku neat.

@Mr. Kite

They're both two of the most ubiquitous anime/game VAs in their respective languages. A bit of overlap here and there is pretty much inevitable so 2 instances in their lengthy careers years/companies/casting directors apart is mostly just coincidence.

@Mr. Kite NCZ is basically right, although I tend to have a field day gauging "shared roles" lol. Off TOMH, I think Bandai & Animaze had him dub over Takahiro Sakurai a few times. Not necessarily because of the actor, but I suppose as an addition to a good audition.

Love his work as Yosuke in Persona 4, he nailed Yosuke's youthful, clumsy, yet good-hearted character. I also love his work as Simon, Ben Tennyson, Sasuke, Sunset Overdrive's Player Character, Suzaku, and Matt Miller. He's got a really cool voice and he's a great actor who imbues a lot of emotion and personality into his roles. Easily one of the most talented VAs in the industry.

Wish him the best of luck in future endeavors, and also congrats to him and his wife on having their first child.

His work as Simon in Gurren Lagann is also absolutely perfect. One of the best dubs ever made, & in heavy part to his work. His understanding of the Japanese (& French, & German) languages is such a boon to him & you can really tell how well he understands & feels consistent with the original-language performances.

Happy birthday, Yuri. One of my favorite personal VA's, usually recognizable in his youthful, cool, friendly voice. Sasuke is my oldest & personal favorite. I also loved his work as Shingen, Bobby Drake, Crawler (Bioshock 2), Makoto, Karl Neumann, & Spiderman. Saw Dark Knight Returns recently (*amazing* film) & his work throughout was fantastic, total Sasuke/Haseo there. I was also surprised at looking back & discovering he voiced several characters from my late childhood - young Superman, Prince of Persia, Jinnosuke/Kuma, Haseo, & Keigo Asano. Overall his vocal range could be stretched more often, but he often pulls a Rob Paulsen & does small unrecognizable roles (like that thug who goes after Inari in Naruto's first arc).

It's wonderful how well he was among the first English-language VA's to climb the ladder from foreign dubs into original works. I'll likely go back to watch Ben10 (a show that came "after my time", so to speak) solely to hear his rise to the top. It's very kind of him to return from time to time to reprise old roles, although it's a bit sad he can't really seek out many new dubs. He is also just a very sweet person in general. I appreciate that openness so much. His & Tara Platt's book on VO is likely the most definitive work in all of the English language regarding the subject. I don't know how much more props I can give the guy. Cheers, Yuri, hope your 46th is spectacular, & may you live long & prosper.

One word to start this post off: Spinzaku. Happy Birthday, Yuri Lowenthal! His Sasuke Uchiha is what introduced me to the VA himself, and though he isn't as fascinating in the role as Noriaki Sugiyama is, Lowenthal's overall voicing of Emo-duck (*especially* in Shippuden) is very noteworthy at the end of the day.

I also liked Yuri Lowenthal as Yosuke Hanamura, Simon, Ben Tennyson, Wonder White, Matt Miller, Marth, Prince, Jinnosuke/Kuma, Keigo Asano, Bedman, Pip Bernadotte, Shinra Kishitani, Alviss, Alucard, Cecil Harvey, Glacius, and Spider-Man/Peter Parker.

Happy Birthday Yuri Lowenthal!

My favourite role of his is Yosuke from Persona 4. He just breathes so much life into the character, and his Minato was decent enough in P3, but even better in PQ! He did such a great job differentiating their voices.

Another favourite is Alucard from the Castlevania series. I know some people don't like his voice for that character, but I always felt his voice and performance brought a lot of depth to the role. In fact it was the first time I actually looked up who he was as a VA haha.

His Marth is also rather excellent. I wasn't too big on him in Codename Steam but in Fates and Heroes? He freaking kills it. He sounds earnest and strong-willed. Exactly how Hikaru Midorikawa sounds in the role. And while I wasn't a big fan of his Corrin (because IMO it sounds a tad too "badass" and only focuses on the heroic aspect of his character) he basically uses the same kind of voice for Eliwood. And there he sounds PERFECT. Eliwood's one of my favourite Lords in the series so I'm glad Yuri Lowenthal did such a great job with him!

I also love his Ben 10, Sasuke, Luke, Pharos, Ryoji, Merric, Kiragi, and Cecil Harvey!

Just wanted to note that it seems this guy's presence in anime has diminished considerably in recent years. He actually hasn't really gotten a single new anime role at all in recent years, and most of his recent anime roles have been reprisals (i.e. Durarara and Naruto). A lot of his work has shifted heavily towards video games and western animation, and mostly only reprises his past anime roles, and hasn't gotten cast into a new anime role in years, mostly only getting work in the big video games and western animation (I think it's well known at this point that Yuri's extremely prolific in video games).

The anime fans always talk at length at how Troy Baker has basically vanished from the anime scene, and other VAs such as Travis Willingham have significantly diminished presences, but it seems to be overlooked that Yuri Lowenthal's anime presence has diminished quite massively lately, possibly even to the point where he seems to have almost completely disappeared from the anime scene as well, and could end up like Troy Baker soon enough.

That said, Yuri Lowenthal is an awesome voice actor and he's done great voice work with many characters such as Sasuke, Yosuke, and Suzaku, and he's done great voice work in a whole lot of games such as Fallout and Spider-Man, and I hope to see him more in upcoming years.

It's understandable. Anime is notorious for not paying too well so it can't really last forever. Games and western animation are where the money and sustainability are at when you're a voice actor. Lowenthal is a pretty in-demand guy so if he and his agent had to choose between stuff that pays more versus stuff that pays less it's a no-brainer really. Sad if you want to hear him in anime, but it's good for him (and thus his fans in general) because it mans he's going places and is unlikely to slow down anytime soon.
said at 2:40 AM on Sun Jul 31 2016
@NCZ That's great for him,but not all of us,care about video games. It's sad I'll probably never hear him in anything new. Hopefully voice actors like Johnny Yong bosch and todd Haberkorn stay in anime.
said at 6:00 PM on Mon Sep 19 2016
@NCZ Are you at all aware of why even stuff like Naruto, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, YGO, Bleach, to an extent Bebop, & most stuff on Toonami/mid-2000's AS...did not pay well? I am confused because I am generally lead to believe (by people such as BigOnAnime & MilesExpress999, who works at CrunchyRoll & is an expert) that anime was a booming industry at that time.

We even had John DiMaggio post-Futurama a few times.

One of the best VAs for young heroes, Yuri has come quite a way in expanding his portfolio since I first heard him as the rather polarizing Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto.

Noteworthy performances include the Persona 3 Protagonist, Yosuke Hanamura, Shinra Kishitani, Pip Bernadotte, Marth, Spider-Man, Suzaku Kururugi, Barnaby Brooks Jr., Kuma, Bedman, Amane Nishiki, Corrin (Male), and Simon.

Congrats at landing a role on Rooster Teeth's RWBY

said at 7:48 AM on Sat Oct 3 2015
@Shaun Ince She (and most VAs) is already a member of the union. Some people just choose to do non-union stuff on the side (whether they're ficore or not).

In any case it didn't stop Dameon Clarke.
said at 9:56 PM on Sat Oct 3 2015
@BioZero216 Agreed, it's true he hasn't been in any anime but due to bigger fish to fry in projects (voice over in video games Pre-lay animation and independent films) and also the rise of new voice actors in the Anime dubbing game (e.g Bryce Papenbrook, Lucien Dodge etc...) that are filling in the shoes of the older generation this makes scheduling more difficult for Yuri to handle.

On the other hand, I don't think Yuri has become a Union-only voice actor in the ranks of Steve Blum, Crispin Freeman, Kari Wahlgren, and especially Troy Baker. Since he is still is able to do non-union voice work in the video game side of things (e.g. Persona, Fire Emblem: Awakening, etc...). So just like Mary Elizabeth McGlynn this makes him a Fi-Core voice actor.

@DisneyAnimefan1995 In terms of alternatives dont forget Steve Staley in the list (hes been in acting longer than Yuri) (he does go under the surname Steve Cannon in most nonunion work even though hes definitely FiCore)
said at 7:15 PM on Fri Mar 25 2016
@Shaun Ince

She can't become a union member if she's fi-core.
said at 7:56 PM on Fri Mar 25 2016

I heard from Fryda Wolff (a very recent professional actor) that financial core is a permanent position.

If my hunch is correct, Laura Bailey became unionized in the late 00's/early '10's after so many big video games (while appearing relatively famously in non-union productions like Street Fighter & Dragon Ball Z).

If I were to *assume* she were in the realm of US law, she'd be financial core, & permanently. The same goes for her husband, Roger Craig Smith, & Troy Baker.

@huzaifa_ahmed In the case of Troy Baker, its just that he is so busy with Union stuff that he can't really appear in them anymore. Same can be said with Roger Craig Smith

@huzaifa_ahmed Travis Willingham is her husband.

My favorite Yuri roles are
1) Persona 3 Protagonist (who has no canon name, both Mikoto and Minato are names given by adaptions)
2) Yosuke Hanamura (Persona 4)
3) Spider-Man (easily my #4 favorite)
4) Pip (Hellsing Ultimate)
5) Kuma (Afro Samurai)

He's really improved with his Spider-Man. He's getting close to the ranks of Josh Keaton and Christopher Daniel Barnes.

Yuri Lowenthal,
All his characters are awesome and it's hard for me to single out one of them.

Sasuke, Soma, Yosuke, Shinra, Luke, Kuma, Zhang He and Amane. He just sounds amazing.

As good as he is, I really didn't like him as Dr. Tokita in 'Paprika'. I thought the role was really underacted in the English dub. He really could have done so much more to capture Toru Furuya's enthusiasm.

Happy Birthday Yuri Lowenthal.

One of the best VA's for any young hero. Simon from Gurren Lagann is easily my favourite role of his. He was absolutely perfect at voicing him from the start as the wimpy kid with no confidence however over the course the series he begins to grow up and finally becomes a hot blooded badass adult. Simon's character development is awesome as was Yuri's performance. I haven't seen many other VA's that nailed that level of intensity. It's huge part of why I love Gurren Lagann and its dub so much.

His performances as Barnaby Brooks Jr., Shinra Kishitani, Suzaku Kururugi, Iceman and Ben Tennyson are also all great.

Also he is a lucky man being married to Tara Platt. ;)

I also loved his performances as Pip Bernadotte, Rikuo Sakisaka, Riddhe Marcenas, Karl Neumann, Spider-Man, Garth/Tempest, Lagoon Boy, Icicle Jr., Raoul Chateau-Renaud, Victor and Marth.

He was also impressive as the ninjas on TMNT. I seriously believed they cast actual Japanese actors for that part. That was really cool.

Happy Birthday Yuri Lowenthal!

@Autovolt "I seriously believed they cast actual Japanese actors for that part. That was really cool. "

You're probably aware, but Yuri has been known to be fluent in Japanese (as well as French & German).

That's likely part of the casting.

A few years ago, I thought that I recognized him on a Ford commercial that had speed dating in the commercial. I may be wrong, but I could have sworn he was one of the people shown in the commercial.

It was in live-action.

It surprises me the kinds of voices Yuri can do. I can scroll down this page and repeatedly say to myself, "HE WAS SO-AN-SO?!!!"
Yet other times I recognize him in my video games before I get to the credits. Not by his voice itself, but by the way he screams/yells. That's how I found out he was Luke in Tales of The Abyss and The Masked Gentleman in Professor Layton and The Miracle Mask (the latter of which isn't listed here).
But hey, I'm not bringing him down, here, he is a talent.
said at 2:33 PM on Wed Mar 5 2014
@Midna Yeah, I've noticed it's pretty easy to find Yuri Lowenthal based on his yelling (that makes him the Tomokazu Seki of English voice acting XD). ...He was unrecognizable during the first appearance of the Masked Gentleman, though - that was kind of epic. (I also love his English accent, it sounds sort of genuine.)

Since the first moment I saw Luke and Asch in Abyss and Yosuke in Persona 4, I've noticed that Yuri actually excels at playing angry characters - there's something in his angry snarling that just sounds strangely captivating. It's such a turnaround from his character's calm voice.

Hey Yuri, I just want to say you are by far one of the greatest voice actors ever to walk the face of the earth. You and Tara inspire me to read your book, Voice Over Voice Actor, What it's Like behind the Mic. Ive always done alot of character impersonations my entire life and that made me realize my dream in becoming a voice actor. I want to thank you and Tara for inspiring me to pursue this dream. My name is Michael Messina and I will stop at nothing to achieve my goal.

I loved Yuri Lowenthal's voice acting in a lot of games that I played, constantly being surprised of his skills and ways of acting and I know he also voice acted the role of Finn in Resident Evil 6. (I recognised his voice and it was stated in the game credits) although I wonder if he also voiced a different character in the same game. because if you'd play resident evil 6 in Leon's campaign, and you are in chapter 2, there is a person shouting from the cathedral: "Get inside, HURRY!" .. and I swear I hear Yuri's voice in there, but it's not stated anywhere in the credits whatsoever... anybody any suggestions?

My favorite roles have got to be Suzaku from Code Geass, and Alucard from Castlevania, I could not believe he was The new voice for Alucard when I first heard him but he made one of my childhood heroes even more AWESOME!!!!!!!

Yuri, Yuri, Yuri. No doubt he's one of the greatest voice talent this world has to offer, yet there's plenty more that can live up to higher standards. Personally, I think some of his best roles are the Prince, Simon from Gurren Lagann, and Alucard from Castlevania (despite the fact that Robert Belgrade did better, in my opinion)
