I used to be a bit more on his Cloud--felt it was inconsistent in quality, until Kingdom Hearts II.5's Re:Coded cutscenes, Explorers and World of Final Fantasy came along; Steve Burton's Cloud definitely feels a lot more polished and better directed, and I feel confident in his performance in FFVII Remaster to capture Cloud's original, and greatest, characterization to a T!

@Lion's Edge Before I was half-and-half on his Cloud - he did great in KH, Crisis Core, and at least half of Advent Children and the first Dissidia. But in KH2, Dirge of Cerberus, the other half of Advent Children and Dissidia, and Dissidia 012, he was often bland and monotone, and overall unremarkable performances. But you're right, his Coded movie and FF spinoff game performances have been solid and give me more hope that he's gotten his act together for the FFVII remake dub. From the few lines we heard from him in that, he didn't sound half bad!

Happy Birthday, Steve Burton! I honestly can't imagine anyone other than Takahiro Sakurai as the voice of Cloud.

When I first saw his picture, I thought I recognized him from General Hospital. Had no idea Jason was Cloud!

@Scrappy-Fan92 Even in a worst-case scenario where they can't get him to record new stuff, they'd probably have plenty of clips from the Dissidia games to work with.

I feel like for half his career as Cloud, he gave a good performance (Kingdom Hearts, Advent Children, Crisis Core, and his story in Dissidia), but the rest of it he gave an awfully dull performance (Kingdom Hearts II, Dirge Of Cerberus, everywhere else in Dissidia and in Dissidia 012). I mean, compare his KH clip with his Dissidia 012 clip. There's no passion or emotion behind the latter one.

@Galactic_Cyrus Actually, even in Advent Children it was too flat. It did work to an extent in the first half because... well let's face it, he had more than a good reason to be miserable, I think some of the dialogue is a bit weak though. Second half however... he should have sounded a lot more confident. Even a bit more "chirpy" in one spot.

I don't blame him though, the voice director for the FF7 and KH franchise has a reputation similar to George Lucas.

If Jack Fletcher was the director for those games, we probably would have gotten something beyond brilliant (and Crispin Freeman as Sephiroth XD)

@Aussieroth I thought he did sound reasonably more confident in the second half. Especially during his confrontations with Kadaj and Sephiroth. (Though his "I pity you. You just don't get it at all" needed work.) At least there was some emotion behind the voice rather than just a complete monotone drawl.

(Crispin Freeman, or Skip Stellrecht, or Paul Dobson, or John Rafter Lee, or even just George Newbern. Any of them would do fine.)

@Galactic_Cyrus Hmmm, Maybe, but that line "I feel lighter, like I lost a little weight, etc" could have been done a lot better.

But again, it's the director I blame. Last I heard all he does say "Slower, faster, sound tough" and other things like that. Not to mention the English dialogue is just bland.

It fascinates me. Jack Fletcher, a man who's VDing work is praised by people from Pixar, PIXAR for **** sake, is chosen to do FF10, 10-2 and 12... but they also got him to do FF13 and 13-2. WORST STORY EVER! Even with great VAing it was pathetic. You'd think that for one of their 3 best franchises they would get him for the job. Instead, they got the guy who's known for giving little and being hard to work with...... I don't get it.

@Aussieroth It could've, but unlike Aerith's line about "why does everyone keep calling me mother lately?" that came later, I felt a deadpan delivery sort of worked for that line. Like Cloud was showing that he was serious and completely on top of things even while saying something totally silly.

If he could do FF13, there's no reason he shouldn't have also done the KH and Dissidia games too. And Bob Bucholz has always been...well, a butthole. He's responsible for alot of the hackery that went on in the dubs for "Digimon" and "Rave Master" too.

@Galactic_Cyrus I wasn't trying to speak his name but yeah, **** it XD. 13, despite the terrible story, the voice acting was top notch, and once again: Jack Fletcher's talents were WASTED

Wow. He's never voiced anyone but Cloud? Not that I mind. Any other character would just be taking Cloud's voice.

At first I wasn't too keen on Steve's Cloud voice because of the way he pronounced certain things ("S" sounds in particular), but it really grew on me and now I enjoy it a lot. I'm playing through VII now and I hear him whenever Cloud speaks.
said at 4:28 AM on Sat Aug 25 2012
@NCZ I actually understand the S thing. It's because Cloud is a "country Boy"

@Aussieroth Really? Huh. Nibelheim never seemed particularly "country" to me. Then again, it would explain Tifa's cowgirl getup.
